I would say 34 (actually I really prefer a 17)...if it fits her hands, if it does not, then the XD is a good choice. I have been shooting a 17 for so long that I pretty much prefer it to anything, and I like being able to detail strip, and fix anything with easy to find parts...not as easy with an XD.

I will try the wolff springs and see if that is the answer. This is pretty much the reason I have been carrying 7 rounders these last few years...mysterious malfunctions disappeared...but it looks like this load needs even more help. Thanks all

Guys and gals, Im getting a last round failure to feed in a couple of my Govt models. We just switched duty ammo from Win T-series 230g SXT to Fed HST 230g+p. These two pistols both function perfectly with my practice ammo 200g lswc, 230 fmj and the aforementioned Win sxt. the live round is ending up nose-up with the tip wedged up between the barrel hood and the slide.
The mags are Wilson 7 rounders, and both of these pistols have been very reliable except with the HST load... Is it because it is a +p load and the springs are not keeping up, thoughts appreciated.
The obvious answer is to use a different load, but thats going to be a little of a hassle..

Hmmm.. well the 4 pound container of Universal that Im looking at now shows a max of 7.2g printed on the label. Alliants Unique which is obviously similar (but not identical) lists a max charge of 8.2g with a Gold dot. Is it over max? I guess so. I have had good accuracy, and velocity over 1000fps. Given that .45 acp max pressure for a +p load is about 6,000 psi higher than what Hodgden shows as max, I think that the 7.5g load is not outside the bounds of good judgement. Having said that, to each his own, and work up to any load especially those that are near max.

Well I think you guys are right in that there is not enough meat there to cut a full set of rails ala the tactical model...
Is there enough metal to cut the simpler "M3" cut? Im pretty sure thats what I saw executed on a non-tactical model.

I think there is. Isnt that what the STI Tactical is? I trained with an officer from New Mexico, who had one built by Benny Hill, and it was cut for a rail...Might want to ask Benny.

When I first started shooting IPSC in '90-'91 there were still a bunch of guys shooting .45 ss comp guns. If I remember correctly 200g was often used, but I seem to remember guys shooting alot of 178g flat base swc and the "long" skinney
155g swc'ers that Meister bullets used to make (not the shorter button-nosed 155's). I dont know is Meister still casts these. I only shot stock, so I didnt ever try them.

With any FP or TC I have always loaded them 1.20min-1.25max. This has worked in my wilson mags and always fed well. Taper crimped to .469.

Were you looking for a load fast enough to make it expand? Or to make major? etc
If you are looking for a reasonable, but stout load, 7.5 of Universal is a good one.

Im running a g35 length one in my long slide... Got it from Custom Glock Racing. I dont know if he stocks the 6 inch one.

As most of the previous post imply; preference has a lot to do with it. Both styles are very shootable, practice and a timer will let you know whats right for you. For me I have an Eagle, and a Tactical lite (aluminum frame). Since I carry a single stack on the job and most of my practice over 17 years has been with a regular govt model, I found I really disliked the Edge... felt like swinging a brick... I still shot it well, but my brain always felt like it was "too heavy", so for me the problem was between the ears, so I stick to lighter rather than heavier.

My brother who is a recreational, but not competative shooter, has long disliked Glocks. He had always felt that the balance point was "off" for him and disliked shooting any of mine. A year ago I put together a stainless CCF frame with a 35 slide and barrel, it was easy and came together with no problems other than the trigger would not reset, I called and they suggested trying a different connector, and that solved it. I ran approx 300 rounds through it, I found that it shot very well, but I disliked carrying it due to the weight. When my brother shot it, he fell in love with it, and now shoots it as well as he can run a 1911. I think he has another 300 or so through it, so its too early to tell regarding durability, but reliability has been good so far.
For him its a range gun, and he loves it, for me all the extra weight did not make a difference other than making my pants sag...So we will see in the years to come how it holds up.

In general, I tend to agree with the opinion that if you want to stick with 1911's for carry, a single stack in .45acp is probably the easiest path....
I have seen many a Hicap that didnt run with carry ammo...just as others have noted.
Having said that, I am the lucky owner of an Eagle in 9mm that works perfectly. I bought it used, it was not reliable, and the hammer followed, so I sent it to Ross Carter and it came back hard chromed and perfect... many thousands of rounds later, the only issue that has come up, is failure to lock back with one mag in need of new spring and follower. I guess Im trying to say that they can be made to run well enough to carry, just dont expect it right off. Do I carry it? Yes, from time to time, but generally still rely on a single stack .45 or a G17....

There is not too much to putting on sights, really easy if you have the tools. If you are in DFW I can put them on for you, I have put on dozens between my guns, buddys guns and for students/cadets. Just drop me a line.
To the original question; sights... I liked Heinie sights since they came out and they are still the standard to measure against. Having said that, the Warren/Sevigny are excellent and I really like the set Im running on one of my 17's. A lot of guys run a Heinie rear (.125, .140, or racecut .152 i think) with a dawson f/o front, that is a good setup too, but the Warren F/O is superior in my opinion, as it is as secure, but the fiber optic rod is higher on the front blade,
so the "dot" gives a truer impact point, as least for me.
If you must use a extended mag release, the Vickers one maybe the way to go, as the factory extended one wears a hole in my support palm! I use the standard one. Beyond that invest in ammo....

I now run a wolf 15lb, w/ a steel guiderod. It works fine with all factory loads which includes 127g+p+ duty loads. I ran a factory spring for about 40k in my first 17, it still functioned fine when I finally replaced it even though it was much lighter than 17lb by then.

Only time I have seen this, was during a 1000 round match, when the rear of the trigger bar and the connector were bone dry and a little dirty.

With regular parts (striker, striker spring etc) I have had good luck with a 15lb. Reliable, flat shooting and consistantly locked into battery. I tried a 13 but it would not pass the test of holding trigger back and muzzle pointed up and slowly releasing slide into battery. This is what I was taught in armorer school. I'm not sure how guys are running a clipped 13...

I have only loaded one pound of it, and the bulk of that was several years ago. I used to load 5.1g with WLP and 200g lswc. Accuracy was not spectacular, but still pretty good just under 2 inch @25. If I came across some more at a good price, I would buy more, but Universal, WST, and AA#2 have been more accurate in my Bar-Sto barrel.
