  1. Could anyone make a suggestion on what load would shoot most accurate in a:

Springfield; SOCOM II P/N AA9629; .308 WIN; 16.25", 6 groove, 1:11 RH twist. Hoping to get out to 300 yards of course as tight as possible.

So far I have a dillon 550 which I am using to reload .233 w/26.1 grns varget and a 55grn FMJBT.

Of course I know I would need to purchase loading dies and other hardware for my press.

The powder I have is Varget but may switch to Ramshot TAC.

Please provide links for recommended bullet shape and weight. Should I use a 150 grn in this short barrel?

I also need links for purchasing brass processed or un processed that I could reload.

Please post load data and links for the supplies I would need. I am not opposed to buying on-line and in bulk to save money in the long run.

    Thanks.

  2. I started to reload .22:

    Hornady .223

    Varget @ 27.0 grn

    PMC brass

and Remington No 7 1/2 Small Rifle Bench Rest Primers.

    My rifle:

AR15 Noveske N4 upper with Noveske BGC.

I know that the best primers to resist "slam fires" are the CCI #41 mil-spec.

I know that some manufactures BRPs have a super soft cup.

    ????Million Dollar Question????

Has anyone had a slam fire in an AR15 using Remington No 7 1/2 Small Rifle Bench Rest Primers?

I am aware of slam fires so I slammed the bolt on one of my reloads and then removed the round from the chamber and noticed that there was a dent on the primer from the free floating pin.

Just asking cause I want to be more than safe.

Please post if you have used Remington No 7 1/2 Small Rifle Bench Rest Primers in an AR15.

    Thank you.

  3. started to load .223 on my dillon 550b.

started to load varget into PMC .223 brass starting from 22.0 grns up to 27 grains in about 1 grain increments.

I polished the inside of my powder funnel and the charge variance is +/- .3 grns at worst if I am trying to drop 26.0 grns.

When i got to my heaviest load ~ 27 grains.Powder started to spill say every 15th piece of brass I tried to charge.

Before this I had no problems with spills and I loaded about 200 rnds without one spill.

Can anyone suggest what to I could do to avoid this annoying problem?

    Is it my stroke speed?

Is the powder clogging as it's trying to make it down the neck of the casing?

Am i getting cross linking of my powder? should I clean my powder funnel?

Am in in danger of something worse like an over charge?

  4. So a buddy of mine would like me to reload using the specs that he got from Wilson Combat.

I was wondering how these 2 powders would meter in a 550b VVN310 and VVN320 ? anyone have experience?

  5. So it's time for me to start loading up .223 for plinking out to 100 to 150 yards.

the problem is that the Hogdon 335 powder that I wanted to go with is still out of stock.

So what powder from http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/ would you recommend for loading.

    55grn .22 caliber FJM bullet

    https://secure3.mooseweb.com/montanagoldbullet.com/pricelist.tpl

    PMC brass

Remington 7 1/2 small rifle bench rest primer

    for a noveske 14.5" length barrel w/ 1/7 twist

the rules are it has to be from powder valley. I would like to order about 16lbs :

    http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/

Please specify powder / suggested charge and C.O.L

My initial guess is to purchase the Hogdon Benchmark powder in 2 8lbs jugs.

    Thank You.

  6. So I would like to know how important it is to sort Brass for .45 ACP

I will be shooting @ 25yrs with a semi custom pistol that is known to shoot 3" groups at 50 yards.

My load is Winchester primers, 4.0 Solo w/ 200grn LSWC loaded in a dillon 550b.

? Holding that I am steady to hold the pistol steady to hit bulleye.

How important is it to sort headstamps for slow shooting at 25 yards?

I have to say I like uniformity but if it won't help me hit bulls eye at 25 yards then what is the use.

    Thanks in advance.

Also are 9mm as forgiving on this head stamp sorting as .45 ACP?

  7. I have a new dillon .223 decapping/resizing die and it was purchased new from brianenos.com.

It seems to dent the shoulder of my cases. there doesn't seem to be anything stuck on the shoulder of the die.

? Am I correct in assuming that dents on the shoulder will cause variations in head space and consistency?

How dangerous is it to shoot rifle ammo with a dent in the shoulder?

Also I lube my cases but it still seems that it takes a little more effort to resize and trim than it dose to resize and decap a pistol round. Is this normal?

Do you think I should call dillon and ask them to replace the die?

    Thanks in advance

  8. Thanks for all the input.

    I figured out the problem.

The person I purchased the 550b from had mounted the 550 without a strong mount on this workbench.

I was speculating that the presses motion was somehow being hindered by his workbench or lack of strong mount.

Once i took the press home and mounted it on my strong mount which allowed a full range of motion.

I proceeded to load about 100rnds of .45 ACP ammo and since I was new I was unaware that the shell plate platform was being stopped by the sizing/decaping die.

Once I changed the height of the first die everything seemed to have shifted downward about a primer in height.

Anyways wanted to let you guys know that the problem is solved and I am happily creating ammo on my "one armed bandit".

Just wanted to archive this problem in case someone else runs into the same thing if they purchase a used 550b.

  9. Thank You everyone for the advice.

The reason I was worried was that I removed the toolhead that was configured for .45ACP that worked well for 450 rounds.

Messed around with a separate toolhead for the .223 decapping and sizing.

Switched back and then I had all these problems.

Now that I know the primer seating is the right height I will re configure my .45 tool head with the correct heights for all the dies.

    Thanks for the advice.

I'll let you know how it goes.

    BTW.

I was under the impression that if you have separate toolheads and switch them you wouldn't have to reconfigure the die height.

  10. Problem with Dillon 550B primer seating and platform height.

I am new to reloading and after reliably reloading 500 .45 ACP rounds I wanted to start to babble in the depriming/resizing of .223 rounds.

So I took off the tool head with the .45 ACP setup (did not remove or readjust any of the dies). I removed the shell plate (removal of brass set screw and the platform bolt) and locator buttons and switched to the shell plate and locator buttons for the .223 and a tool head that I designated for just resizing and depriming .223 station 1 and trim on station 2. After I adjusted the resizing die to deprime and create the correct headspace I figured out I was running out of time and I need to start to reload my .45 ACP if I want to start shooting this week.

I noticed once I reinstalled my .45 shell plate and locator buttons and toolhead set up for .45ACP, my the primer seating station seemed to come up too high when handle is stroked all the way forward. If I was to load a live primer in a de-primed case it seems that I would come up high enough to smash a primer and possibly set it off (Picture 1). Also when I when to de-prime a case it seems the platform moved about .1” of an inch up. This .1” of an inch is about the same height as a primer.

So my problems are the platform now moves about .1” in both directions. Direction 1 the seating of primers and direction 2 the resizing, belling, seating and crimping of the bullet.

See picture 1: Does your 550b primer set station go up this high?

See picture 2: Case 1 (Far Left) is what it did before I removed and replaced the shell plate and screwed things up. (middle) is how much far down the bullet is pressed deeper so the difference in height is that of a primer. (right) is the over belling of the case.

I inspected my 550 and there is nothing bent or abused or crooked. There is some thing that I am missing that would systematically throw the platform off a primer height at the top and bottom.

If you have any insight on this problem please help me get my 550b back up and running safely.

    Thanks in advance, Dave

  11. I am cleaning and sorting my .45 ACP brass by federal.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference between the brass/goldish tint vs. the silver colored ones?

What are the silver ones made of and do I discard them or treat them the same as the brass ones?

Are the silver ones more or less durable ? Are they even re-loadable?

Some of the silver cases are labeled "Federal .45 ACP" and some are labeled "Federal .45 ACP +P".

Please let me know how to treat these cases.

    Thanks.

  12. So how would one get figure out what OAL is best for his pistol?

What is the theory behind choosing OAL.

    My setup:

    Kimber TLE II RL .45

Magtech Large Pistol Primer R-P brass, Solo 1000 @ 4.2-4.8 grn, and a LSWC 200grn bullet from dardas.

    Current OAL is 1.24"

Please help me find the best OAL for this setup.

    Thank You,

    David

  13. Hello everyone.

As you could tell I'm new here so please be gentle cause I'm sensitive.

I am new to reloading and would like to start reloading .223 PMC brass on my 550b in the next year or so.

Before I start to buy the power and bullets I would like to know how to process my PMC .223 brass.

What steps are involved because I understand that this brass is crimped.

    Would I ?

    Tumble

    Lube cardboard box

    deprime 550b

    resize 550b

    trim 1200b mounted on 550b

    swage super swage 600

de-bur,chamfer, clean primer pocket RCSB trim mate

    re tumble

Now would I be ready to reload?

    re-prime

    powder fill

    seat bullet?

As you could see I need help. Please post comments or links that would get me ready to reload or a least process my PMC brass.

    Thanks in advance.

    Dave
