  1. N320 is the replacement for TiteGroup and 231. If you get down SA way Bexar Community Range has a good selection of VV powders.

Thanks for that tip. I have family in the SA area and am there several times a year. I will stop by and check that out.

  2. Powder Valley only has one pound containers of N330, which I really want to try (but not when considering the add on charges) and Shooter's Source has no powder at all right now. I don't want to buy in quantity until I know I will be happy with a powder and nobody at the retail level stocks Viht powders that I can find in Dallas. Guess it's still Titegroup and 231 for me.

  3. Bianchi load with 115XTP at 50 yards. 1.5inch group

Same load with 115JHP MontanaGold bullet. 3inch group.

This comparison just shows the quality of the bullet (I am in no way complaining about MG bullets.....)

Steel load with 115JHP at 35 yds through open gun. Bullet stacks on top of each other.

Same load with 115FMJ at 35 yards through same gun. 3-4 inch group.

I repeated this with a 88gr jhp load, substituting 95 fmj bullet of same manufacturer. It is disgusting to see the group size after you shoot the hollowpoints. It makes you think that you forgot how to shoot.

The hollowpoint is inherently more accurate, period. You have to ask yourself, do you want "just accurate enough", or the best your custom gun is capable for you to do your best....

    Something to ponder....

And what is your Bianchi load, Doug?

  4. Wayne, the Berry 124 JHP works well, but you can't over crimp it.

Thanks Doug and all the others who've replied. I am planning on attending Rogers in 2012 and they've revised their ammo requirements to either plated or frangible ammo (2500 rounds needed). I will give the Berry's a try first and see what I get...

  5. If you're up to the accuracy demands and it's legal in your state, that should be a great close range deer killing load. I've been shooting good sized SW Texas deer with a 625 Mountain Gun in .45 ACP with similar loads for several years with complete satisfaction. All shots have been within 30 yards and all deer were taken with one shot apiece and none went over 30 yards after the hits.

  6. I've had similar frustrations with my M&P with regard to grouping. I've tried lots of different ammo and it's at best a 4-5" gun at 25 yards. I have Glocks that will stay inside 3" for 10 shot strings at 25 yards all day and my SA 10-8 Operator is a legit sub-two inch gun, so in this case, it's the gun and not the shooter (at least THIS time).

Randy Lee of Apex Tactical has stated that he's working on new sear housing blocks and locking blocks that combined with the forthcoming Bar Sto barrels should turn the M&P into a sub-two inch gun (he thought they would shoot into an inch). I hope he's successful. I really like the M&P a lot and want to see it shoot lights out. Time will tell..

  7. I love the ergonomics of the gun and think it's truly a leap forward in the service pistol world. That's coming from a guy who spent 25 years carrying custom 1911s and basically stock Glocks of one sort or another as an LEO. I also spent two years in Iraq teaching the Glock and AK to the police over there (such as they are). I watched over a million rounds of 9mm go downrange during that time and also managed my PD's firearms training program for several years, so I have a well based frame of reference on this situation.

I know that all of us here like to look for loads that really perform at an excellent level, accuracy wise, and we usually find those loads with a bit of effort and experimentation. At the same time, I doubt that many of us have to deal with main line service grade guns that shoot this poorly with typical training and practice ammo and that requires this kind of work to find something that stays under three inches. I've always told folks not to mess with a pistol too much in the way of barrel replacement or other accuracy work until they can outshoot the gun as issued. That standard is very difficult for most shooters, but it's sure as hell not for this gun and I don't appear to be alone with this issue.

I'm going to contact Smith and Wesson and see what they say on this.

  8. I have an M&P9 S/N MEP43** that is showing big time accuracy issues. I recently traded for the gun (and maybe I know now why it was available!) and have fired about 200 rounds through it in function testing. When I started shooting it off the bench at 25 yards the past few weeks, I've noticed that I have what is about a 7" - 8" gun for five shot groups! There seems to be very little breech end play and the barrel hood fits about like any other service grade pistol does. Rifling appears OK, although it does seem to copper foul pretty significantly. The trigger is great (3.5#) due to installation of the new Apex sear and firing pin block parts.

I've tested three different loads in the gun, all of which shot horribly. All of these loads will shoot from 2" - 3" in my Glocks and just to make sure, I shot my Glock 19 with two of the loads at the same time yesterday and they grouped fine. I don't have unrealistic expectations from a service grade pistol, but I think that expecting the thing to shoot under 3" is not unreasonable.

Anybody have a similar experience or have any input on this mess?

  9. I've been shooting AR in my 625 Mountain Gun and it's a deer killing machine. My load is as follows:

    255 Mount Baldy Keith SWC

    6.5 grains Unique

    Starline AR case

    WW LP primer

Runs about 875 and groups into 3" at 50 yards in my revolver.

  10. Per the rules that I've read, an aftermarket barrel is not permitted. A barrel can only be replaced with another factory barrel. As for the PC 5906, I think it may be acceptable, but the gun must be a "production gun available to the general public". I know that some of the S&W PC 9mm are LE sales only items. I don't know which side that 5906 would fall on.
