  1. I have had g17's, g34's and 35's and are all good guns for the price. BUT, I recently bought an M&P 9mm Pro and would not go back to a Glock. I like the balance and looks a little better. You can't really go wrong with a Glock, M&P or a XD as a good production gun. Like the post above said, find friends and fellow shooters that will let you try thier guns to see which YOU prefer.

I shoot a STI Steelmaster in open, but I am now building my M&P into an opengun for multigun.

    Good luck.

  2. Ditto on the APEX kit! I installed one in my M&P Pro, including the new trigger, and it was the best $180 dollars I have ever spent on a trigger job. As for stipling, have you thought about grip tape? Dawsons Precision has pre-cut tape for the M&Ps.

  3. I had the same issue with my Dawson Steelmaster, but it was with 1 bigstick that I bought new. A second big stick worked fine as did my 5 other mags. The empties would hit the mount with just the one mag. I didn't use that mag again until I decided to go to a 90 degree mount. I did not go to the mount because of this problem, I did it to get the dot closer to the bore. Haven't had a stove pipe since. I have all the stock parts in my gun, just the way it came from Dawson 3 years ago. I shoot about 2500 rounds a year through this pistol.

  4. Ken,

    Fantastic idea!

You could also use USPSA classifications to help determine Pro or Amateur. From a lower "B" class shooter's eyes (mine), GMs would be considered Pros and most Master class could also be. USPSA designates these two as the top 15% and if you include "A" class then it would be the top 25%. Now before everyone starts giving me hell over this, I said it could be used to HELP determine status. I know most "A" class and Master class shooters are not sponsored shooters but they are still in the top 25%.

On the other hand, just because you are sponsored doesn't make you a Pro shooter. I am seeing more sponsors looking for the "A" and "B" class shooters to sponsor since they are more of us and we tend to influence the newer shooters at our home clubs on equipment purchases. I personnally did not look to see what Jerry M, Mike V or any other Pro was using when I bought my gear, I looked to my local heros irreguardless if they were sponsored or not.

I also feel if a shooter has participated in a PRO/AM match as a PRO, then they should be considered a PRO for this match. Look at the standings for USPSA handgun Nats and compare those stats to larger 3 gun matches. You will see alot of the same names.

Last but not least, the Lewis scoring system is a very good system for amatuer shooters to garner some of the top prizes! My shooting buddy won his AR using this system at a Tri-Gun Challenge, many years ago, and is still using it today! I believe he won it as the top shooter in "D" class. If he had been shooting the current format he would not have had any better chance to win a gun then the majority of us. I try to go to 2-3 major matches in a year, (that's all my schedule will allow), and I know that I will not win one of the major prizes because I am competeing against all the Open shooters, but this match will finally give me a chance.

I have shot the CMMG match twice and the DPMS Tri-Gun Challenge 3 times and one thing I really liked was the way the prize tables worked. The guns and higher valued prizes were displayed but the remainder of the prizes were bagged. This made the prize tables run alot faster. I enjoy shooting the SMM3Gun match (my favorite match of the year) but the prize tables take 2-3 hours to get through because everybody goes back and forth before they make up their minds. At the above mentioned matches you picked a bag and then we all opened our bags at the match and showed off what the sponsors donated. They still get their exposure and we get done in half the time. Just a thought.

Ken, thanks again and I hope to see you in September.

  5. I know I am a little late to the party, but, I have a Dawson tuned Steelmaster that has ran all factory ammo that I have fed it. I have had my Steelmaster for a couple years and have only changed the scope mount, I went to a 90 degree from Matt Burkett. I did have an issue with one of my factory big sticks, I would get alot stove pipes from empties hitting the scope mount. None of my other 6 mags had this issue, I changed the mount and no more jams.

If you can't find a used one, Get a new one that Dawson has done, you won't be sorry.

  6. I live just north of Minot and they aren't kidding about the housing being short. If you look north and east of Minot, you can still find some housing but it is getting scarce. There are always jobs listed in the local paper and some of them offer housing. A couple of the oil companies have bought a hotel franchise so they could build a hotel and then rent all the rooms to their company for the next 3 years. If you have a family member that wants a part time or full time job in the town, every fastfood resturant and Walmart have job openings. I have talked to a couple big wigs in the oil field and they say that the Bakken will be drilling for the next 15 years plus. Minot is about the eastern edge of the developement and it is still extending to the north east.

As for the shooting, our local club has a monthly USPSA pistol match and usually 1 3-gun match a year. Bismarck has a new club and they have a monthly pistol match and 1-2 3 gun matches a year. Bottineau has a local club and they are having a 3 gun match next weekend and then another one the end of September. Both Minot and Bismarck have Cowboy Action clubs also. Our club can be viewed at minotrifleandpistol.com. Bismarck's site is BMRPA.org.

Good Luck, hope this helps with your decision.

  7. I have a JP built 1100 with a 12 round tube and it is one of the softest shooting shotguns available, BUT, then I bought my R&R Saiga and it's hard to beat with reloading! 20 round mag change in about 2 seconds. This is the reason my JP is in the classifieds. If you can afford the Saiga from R&R,that is the one to go with.

  8. Can't help you on the tubes working for both guns but Brownells still has ARMSTECH loaders on their website. You could call Brownells and see if they will compare the tubes for you. They are a great company to deal with.

  9. 5 of us shot the Co. match and had a blast with the clayoreos! We just had a local match 2 weeks ago and used them, everybody enjoyed shooting them. Once you see how they work, it is easy for 1 person to hang them. Just open the top up alittle and you can hold it with one hand and insert the round toothpick with the other.

    Great idea guys and thanks.

  10. Yep, the X-rail is legal for Open Division. I went to a Saiga, just so I could keep up with an X-rail! To me the X was more of a chore to figure out my load order when switching targets. My buddy shoots an X and it seems like he never runs out of ammo and the only problems he has had with his were self induced.

  11. I have been shooting multi-gun matches for a few years and for me, I have found that the light Modified works on most stages. I also go to a 6 shot for longer range or heavier steel and stay with 7 1/2 shot for the rest. As for the ported choke, I think this would make your shotgun an open class gun IAW USPSA rules. You can check the rule book on the USPSA site.

Stage 1 doesn't look to have any shotgun, 2 rifles and 1 pistol. The rest of the stages, I personally, would use the light Mod. Check your slugs with Imp. cyl and Lt Mod and see which one is more accurate. Mine is about the same.

Remember to only shoot as fast as you can get a good sight picture. It will save you time if you don't have to reload as often!

    Have fun at your match.

    Doug
