The one I have shoots very tight groups. I love the looks of it with the fish scales. The first time I saw one I knew I had to get one. It has digested every thing I have put through it without a single problem. I have used it on bowling pins with good success.

I too was having trouble calling my shots and seeing the sight lift with iron sights. I'm 50 plus and can't see the sights and target at the same time. Without my glasses I can see the front sight clearly and have been putting them in the middle of the fuzzy brown thing and pulling the trigger. Because of this I have finally gone over to the dark side and will be shooting open this year. Now I can wear my glasses and the dot is sharp and the target is too. At practice this AM I noticed the red dot on brown thing, pull trigger, dot lifts, hole where dot use to be. Holy crap Batman. Next thing dot off to C/D area, pull trigger anyway, dot lifts, hole in C/D zone. By George, I believe I've got it. Now I hope to duplicate this if/when shootig iron sights. At least I think I have a feel for it now.

FWIW I played at the Area 8 FGC and had a great time. The places I shoot, Black Creek and Blackwater, seem to have a goodly no. of L10 and Production shooters. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to try another factory gun match. More chances to shoot equals more good.

The Franford Arsenal one sold by Midway works great. I'll load up 5 tubes and then crank out 500 rounds on the 650 in no time. Beats the heck out of loading the primer tubes one by one on a flip tray.

This may seem obvious to everyone else, but it was not to me so i throw it out here. I had all kinds of trouble with my first new open gun with ejection/extraction problems and in spite of everything iI tried could not get it to work. I sent it back to the smith and he called back a few days later and asked if i had any gun oil in the house. He lubed it up and sent it back. Works great. Try lubing the hell out of it first, enough so that the first shot or so it gets on your glasses.

Thanks to all. I tried a 7 pound spring and only have an occaional jam now, and it does not seem to matter which brass i use now -38 super, comp, TJ-all with the original extractor set up fo 38 super. Will try a slightly hotter load which i hope will take care of the problem altogether.

i'm sorry if this has been covered before, but I tried a search and did not get any hits. I'm making the move to open and bought a sti competitor from Dawson. The gun was set up for 38 super, but in my ignorance I bought 38 super comp brass. Lots of double feeds, empty case on top, as well as stovepipe jams with the case stuck out about 90 degrees to the right. I put in an afteck extractor without any modification. Only problem was I lost the cap which retains the springs. Lost the springs too, but I found them after crawling aroud on my garage floor with a flashlight for an hour or so. Of course i already had extra springs, but I never had found the cap....go figure. Anyway got a new cap and got the extraxtor in the gun. Now no more double feeds, but still the stove pipes every 10 to 20 rounds or so. These loads just make major. Any thoughts? Is this an extractor problem, an ejector problem or something else. I have about 500 rounds through the gun. No shock buff and whatever recoil spring that came with the gun. Thanks in advance.

I shot up 2000 through my para 16-40. No problems except for a fair amount of smoke..so bad I missed some gray plates at an area 8 match a year or so ago. At least it gave me a good excuse.
Go to www.laser-cast.com and look in shooters journal archives winter 2001 and there will be info on these bullets and some load data. I would not have any problem using them for practice, but would pick some thing else (such as precision bullets) for match.

I cast my own for the 45acp 200gr. swc, 230 gr. round nose for blasting or 230 gr. fp for pins.
Precision 185 gr. fp 40s for limited match and D&J 180 fp for practice (too much smoke for match use)
124 gr Montana Gold hp for my new race gun.
Anyone use precision bullets for the 38 super?

I recently obtained a Competitor from Dawson. Making the move from limited to open, as I just can't see the sights and target at the same time with the limited gun any longer. Gun is set ujp for 38 super, however I order 38 super comp brass by error. I have a nice load worked up, but have unpredictable extraction and ejection which I blame on the extraxter. Any tips on how to adjust the current extracter so make it more reliable? Thanks in advance.

I shot a lot of 230 gr LRN over 4.2 gr. Clays out of a Springfield and Kimber 45. Soft shooting and accurate.
I don't think I would go any higher than this and believe 4.5 gr. may be a bit much.

I can't speak to the spray, but I cast my own 40 S&w practice bullets ( lee 6 cavity molds) and use Midway (Franklin Arsenal) tumble moly followed by tumle lube with rooster jacket and get good results.

Go to laser cast web page to the shooter journal archives, winter 2001 as I recall. Several loads listed. I use U. Clays at about 4.6 gr. Makes major, soft shooting. A bit smoky. Shot area 8 a year or so ago. They had some gray plates and it was hard to see them after several rounds.

Jon, I confess the bulletts sat in my truck for about three hours before the match ( getting warmed up) and the chrono was the second stage i shot so likely still warm. The precision bulletts are lead with a moly coating of some sort and may move along a little faster down the barrel than jacketed ones. I was alittle worried before the match and thought that I should crank up the charge a coulpe of tenths but had alredy made up 500 of them so decided what the hell if I made minor I would just shot all A aone hits

FWIW just finished shooting Area 8 Race Gun Match shooting limited with a P 16 40. Used 5.1 gr U. Clays under a Precicion Bullett 185 gr TC. loaded 1.190. Little smoke, easy to see a double charge, soft recoil. Made PF 175. Only stage I did well in.

Just bought the Avery tapes so I thought I would post to this forum my opinion about the aids I have bought.
To set the stage I am 52 yo been doing this about 5yrs and am a solid C class shooter. Could die a happy man if I make it to B.
Secrets tape from Lenny Magill (sp?) First tape i bought. Good for a beginner. Learned alot.
BE book. Read it twice before I began to understand it. Still read parts and go HUH? Now have two copies one for home and one at my vacation home. Every time i read it i learn something new.
Barnharts tapes Wow! a lot of info, some may be outdated. Expensive but worth it. I am missing one of the tapes as my dog chewed it up and I plan to replace it.
Jarrett tape. Short and sweet. If you only have an hour before the match this is the one to watch
Burkett tapes. A little disjointed but BE's portion great. Perhaps I'll understand more of the book when I reread it.
Avery tapes. Very good. Several interesting drills which i plan to incorporate.
Also took a course with Todd Jarrett. What a blast. Lots of rounds down range and a chance to ask questions to the Todd God. NOW IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER HALF OF WHAT HE SAID.

New Dillon Powder Measures

I've made the move to an open gun in 38 super comp. I have a new 650 with the new style powder measure and am using 4756 powder. The old style powder measures have always been within 0.1 grain plus or minus but this one was way off at time plus or minus 0.5 grains. 4756 is a new powder to me, but i had the same problem with 3n37 which has always metered well. When i changed back to the old style powder measure it seemed to do OK with the 4756. Whats up with that?
