  1. I started out with my S&W Model 41, ran flawlessly.  Dabbled with Irons using my Pachmayer conversion made by Peter Stahl but Colt Ace mags only worked, and they cost a ton.   Wanting something different than the S&W 41, I ended up with a Nelson.  Springfield Armory frame from my custom 9mm produced too many problems.  Put it on an old Caspian frame and have had no issues.  I shoot CCI SV with the comp, with the barrel weight or without any of those and not one malfunction.  I have the custom top with a direct dot mount.  Could not be happier.  My son in law runs the Volquartsen Black Mamba with CCI SV, not an issue.  Other ammo with it had problems.  CWA is also a fine gun but bring your checkbook.

  2. Thank you for your input.  I plan to measure but being a few thousands off can cross thread a screw.  I will assume most hole pattens are the same these days.  Not all the sites I have been on give hole spacing so with your experience, I'll buy what I like instead of one from a frame mount manufacture.

  3. Looking to add a thumb rest to my buddies 2011.  When I added mine, I just went with the same manufacture of the scope mount for a thumb rest on mine to make sure the screw pattern to the frame was the same.  Back in the 80's and early 90's, scope frame mounts for them were not all interchangeable in hole spacing.  Are they more standard now?  Say I have an Atlas frame mount, would a thumb rest from other notable manufactures be the same hole spacing.

  4. I have run the 9# spring with CCI SV with the barrel weight, with the comp and without anything.  Functioned flawlessly.  I like using the Barrel weight or comp because of balance for me.  I put BITE grips on my old Caspian frame to feel more like my 2011's.  I did try the Nelson on my Springfield 9mm but would have had to modify all the mags to work with it (known issue).  Norma Match has run well but I bought 10K of CCI SV before prices went up last year.  Good luck shooting.

  5. Saltzman Gun Works in Tipton, IN for me.  Ray has built me great race guns back on the 80's and recently took my Bianchi Cup gun and made it a standard 5" 9mm but nothing is standard, tack driver like all the rest.  For a while he has been making long range rifles and the guys shooting them have racked up a bunch of trophies.  I've known him since the early 80's and can get him to build or work on any of my stuff.

  6. Bit of a stretch but seeing if anyone knows. I have the Oakley Radar Range Repl g26 lenses and have really liked them for moderate to bright light conditions. These lenses appear to brighten and block sun very well for me. They work great for red dot shooting and all clay target shooting. It's time to upgrade my shooting glasses and wondering what lenses from Ranger Falcon Pro line might be similar to the G26 lenses?

  7. Same here as Dr Phil.  Our plate racks we had 1/4" steel plates that could easily be replaced with the NRA Action Pistol (Bianchi) racks.  The .22 plates did have a bolt in to adjust and lock.  We also made a specific plate rack with 3" plates for .22's but they were the same steel thickness of the regular plate racks.  My brother and I practiced on these for the week before the Bianchi Cup just to be dialed in a little better.  All our competition rack could mix and match falling plates, Bowling Pins and Tombstones as well.  It was nice having 7 competition racks and 2 additional for magnum pistoles and the 3" .22 rack.  Had some amazing rattle battle matches shooting a ton of steel.

  8. I'm in the older demographic but I like red.  Tried the green and it was fine for shooting steel but the green washed out to much for me on brown targets.  My son-in-law just loves the green.  As others have said, try before you buy.  Best to shoot on different colored targets if you can.

  9. Has this ever happened to anyone? Had an unopened keg of IMR 3031 crumble. Was in my dad shop (HVAC) for 30+ years, traveled to my shop (HVAC) last year and sat on top of my safe since then. I would assume it is all bad and cannot be separated from the insulation. Here's the crazy part, I have another unopened keg of IMR 3031 that was purchased at the same time and stored right next to it un-affected. I might need to transfer it to another empty keg of a different material ASAP.  Thoughts?

  10. CO I run a Glock 34 with brass plug and heavy full guide rod that was within weight limits for Steel Challenge and USPSA.  The weight helps with recoil and transitioning to the next target.  You do need to test what ammo works best for you.  Heavy bullet and slow velocity or mouse fart load that still cycles.  It's all about what works for you to transition as fast as you can on target.

Over the last two years I have run 3.5gr of 231 under a 124gr Precision Delta JHPV2 loaded at 1.10” and have shot 5000+ rounds with zero FTF or FTE in my PPC and in my non red dot SIG P320X5 pistol

    BUT

After  installing a Holosun 507COMP on my SIG P320X5 pistol last month and taking it out to sight it in and shoot it some (stock springs throughout) the 3.5gr load of 231 under the 124gr Precision Delta HPV2 had on average one FTF or FTE per 20 round mag. I think this occurred because of the added weight on the slide created by adding the Holosun.

As a result I loaded 200 rounds of 3.8gr of 231 under the same PD 124gr HPV2 bullet at 1.10” and all 200 rounds functioned perfectly.

Now I have about 8000 rounds that will be used for PPC (3.5gr load). I am going to run another 200 rounds using the 3.8gr of 231 through the P320X5 before I load up the planned 2000-3000 rounds that will be dedicated for pistol use just to make sure it is the perfect round (no FTFor FTE).  Once I shoot up the 3.5gr. loaded rounds, I will load all future rounds at 3.8grs of 231 so I do not have to worry about keeping up with two different 9mm loads that I shoot in competition.

I know that pain.  On my old single stack 38 Super race gun, I decided to take off the old 30mm Aimpoint 5000 frame mount and do a slide mount dot.  All the light steel challenge loads I had would not run.  Thought it might be interesting to run but with 5k rounds loaded, I went back to the old trusted set up.

At lunch I am going to go see if my 3.6gr HP38 and 115gr blue bullets work in the 9mm race gun.  I have some 125gr blue bullets and at 3.6gr HP38, would that be a better load?

  12. First I have many 8# jugs of HP38 and am trying to be economical before buying more powder.  I am looking to make very light loads for Steel Challenge PCC, 115gr FMJ / 115gr Blue Bullet or 125gr Blue Bullet.  All the reloading manuals I have, start with 115gr bullet and 4.5gr HP38.  I dialed it down to 4.0gr of HP38 with both 115gr bullets.  Is there any risk of going lower on powder weight other than it not cycle or stuck bullet?  For primers I am using Fiocchi and CCI SPP.  Next steps are 100gr HB Berry bullets but would like to find a load that is soft but does going slower cause other issues for Shooting Fast?

  13. My son-in-law always calls me when he finds primers, I have never said "no don't buy them".  Got lucky, a local reloader had 4K of Fiocchi SPP that was too small of a batch for him to load and track so he offloaded them to me at cost.  It was a good day!  As a kid Dad would send us to pick up 200K primers at a time.

  14. Tumble before to clean up dirty range brass, tumble after due to lube (if used or needed).  JHP and reverse hollow based wadcutter (don't ask) sucks and time to get the dental pick out.  Sucks when you need to inspect thousands of rounds for them buggers.  Dad owned a shop and we commercially reloaded, my round count is in the millions and no issues so far.

  15. I tried the Holosun green dots and couldn't get use to them.  Put a Razo on the 2011 and have had good success with it.  Customer service has been excellent.  First one died on a Saturday, called them Monday and had replacement on Wednesday.  Pulled out the old single stack race gun to run steel challenge with its old Tasco PDP2, somehow it is still working.  Ran my old Bianchi Cup revolver in steel challenge with the Amipoint 3000, that thing won't die!

  16. I recently needed a new reloading bench and was looking at the off the shelf options as lumber is still high.  Went antiquing with the wife and came across an old chemistry lab table for $45.  All oak and heavy as hell.  Added a platform underneath for storage.  Screwed it to the wall and have the 1050, 650 and a Star Progress bolted permanently on it.  Need to find room for the old Rock Chucker though.  I have another bench that I use for all my Mec's and other Star machines, but they are put away after use on it as is serves as a multipurpose bench.  Might find a gem on Facebook Marketplace for very little spent.

  17. I am blessed to have multiple guns to shoot multiple divisions in SC, USPSA, Bianchi, etc.  I like having the ability to shoot a different division here and their because I have the toys.  Level one is just a fun day to be with friends and improve on times with the divisions that matter to me.  Level two and up matches are when rubber meets the road.  Adding more divisions becomes a hassle for match management constantly monitoring the number of guns each division has.  We all want to compete and be recognized in our division.  A recent Level 2 I participated in only had one SS entry, me but if I would have moved to Limited, I would have gotten second.  Also per Pracitscore I was the top Steel Master at the match.  Again, not enough entries to be recognized.

As many have stated, we have many divisions and classifications so that all can feel special.  I know the sport needs to survive but we should think what is the best way.

Open is what it is, build what you want and have fun.  I see many guns that would classify today as LO in Open, so why add it if the times are similar in Open and CO today.

Find a way to handicap PCC and Rimfire for the appearance of overall win.  Major and Minor did that well back in the day.
