  1. Experts-

I am fairly new to the 2011/1911 platform and I really have no idea how to do much other than disassemble/reassemble it. I'd like to get a deeper understanding of how they work so I can troubleshoot them, fix them, fit new parts, etc. Any ideas on books/videos/courses/etc. to get more proficient with them?

    Thanks again!

  2. OK 2011 experts, I have a strange one for you. Let me see if I can explain what is happening.

I noticed that when I have the trigger pinned back and rack the slide, I'd hear a click and the trigger would move back a little more. I pulled the grip safety so I could see what was happening and it looks like the disconnector hits the sear, just a tiny bit, until the slide starts to move back and presses the disconnector down letting the sear snap passed it.
So, what's the expected behavior, and how do I fix it?
In the pictures below, the first one shows sear caught on the disconnector, the second picture shows the disconnector pressed down and the sear moves passed it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, 170 is max disregard 140 length unless you put an extension on it that makes IT over 170.LOL

Amazing how many folks don’t know this. I actually had a chrono guy challenge my 140’s this summer. Ugh...

Hahah. This is exactly what crossed my mind when I asked.

    Thanks for the clarification!

  4. I recent purchased a set of MBX base pads for my 170mm tubes but they are way to long now and don't fit in the gauge. If I put them on my 140mm mags, they don't fit the gauge, but are they legal for Open since they don't exceed 170mm? Wasn't sure and thought I'd check.

    Thanks!

Check to make sure that the "neck"  measurements or area where the mag changes from double to single stack is correct. Atlas has a short YouTube video on how to do it for Gen 2 mags. BUT check in the comments for the correct measurements, the measurements in the video are for 40's not 9's.  I was having problems with that gap/nose diving after I changed to Grams guts in my STI tubes and I keep tuning and working on getting them to run right. Come to find out I had the wrong measurements..... don't that! The stock followers (Gens 2)are wider then then Grams, the area where they change from double to single stack needs to be tighter for the Grams to feed right which causes that gap between the rounds which causes the nose diving. Good luck I hope this save you some of the frustrations that I had.

This is great! Thank you for posting this. I'll have to check my dimensions tonight and see of that's the ticket for my tubes. The video is mentions Gen 2 tubes,  did this work for your Gen 1 tubes?

    Appreciate the help!

  6. Yes, sorry, should have mentioned that. 9 Major.
I haven't tried shooting them yet, just trying to get my mags "tuned" per the Atlas videos. The STI mags work fine right now, they're new. I was just trying to get all the stuff ready for the season and the current springs start wearing out. I'll give that a whirl and see if that gets it done.
    Thanks again!

  7. So I'm getting there, but have a problem. I did watch the Atlas videos (great stuff). I have my feed lips set as instructed, but there is a gap between the first and second round when using the new Grams spring/follower. They sit correct with the original STI spring/follower. Curious what I'm missing.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

  8. Ahhhh, OK, that makes sense now.

On a side note, I did order some MBX base pads and Grams springs/followers to use on these mags. The followers seem too large and don't move all the way to the top, so I assume some filing is in order. The top round sticks up/the top round doesn't lay flat on the bottom round like the factory ones do. Any tips on fixing those issues?

And thank you all for all the info/help! Open gear is so much more complex than my Production gear. It's hard to know what you don't know. Any books/videos for tuning up your gear?

There were several small changes over the years regarding STI mags. There were length changes, feed lip forming changes, mag catch shape, etc, etc.

I concur with Sarge on the mags you have are both Gen 1. By the looks of it, it looks like the final iteration of Gen 1 before they went to Gen 2.

Are one Gen better/preferred over the other?

    Thanks guys!

  10. I have a few STI mags and noticed that some are different than the others. Wondering if one type is better than the other. What do you guys think?

Both are new, but they have different base pads, the metal is rough/smooth, etc. See pictures below of mag 1 and mag 2.

    Thanks

  11. I pulled my STI 9mm Trubor's upper apart to clean it and notice the firing pin is looking a bit rough. I bought a spare from STI and was going to use it and the FP pin that came with my recoil spring. But when comparing them they are both different than what was in the gun. The FP in my STI is noticeably longer and is different than the new STI replacement I bought. The spring I was going to use from my wolf recoil spring is larger than the one in the STI as well.

So...what should I order to replace my Trubor's firing pin and spring?

Still pretty new to the platform.

    Thanks!

  12. Hello, all.

I'm looking for some recommendations for some new kicks and thought I'd ask you all. I shoot in gravel most of the time and have found baseball cleats to be best for the local matches. But we're heading into the rainy season here in Oregon and my cleats are far from waterproof. Any suggestions for some new waterproof shoes that do well in gravel? I did try the Salomon Speed Cross, and I did like the traction, but the heel is so high that I keep rolling my ankles, so looking for more of a "neutral" shoe.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  13. I just picked up my Open gun (STI Trubor) after a couple of years. I didn't shoot it much and just now starting to "customize" it for my hands. I'm having a really tough time getting my support hand in the right spot and not finding the dot. I thought I'd try a thumb rest to see if that helps, but wanted to see what you all think I should try/avoid. I have pretty "compact" hands, so any that lean that way would be great.

    Thanks!

I have not experienced temp sensitivity with AA7.

My 9 major 115 load has consistently averaged just under 1500fps between 37 and 110F.

5 shot ES is around 20, and has never been a detriment for accuracy.

Most of my chrono sessions have been in the 50-100F range though. The one 37F session was looking for temp sensitivity and the bullets were in the open for over an hour before being tested. That's just one cold test and I haven't tested AA7 any colder than that yet.

I've heard that AA7 was reformulated many years back. Maybe you have the old stuff?

Any number of things could have occurred to your powder in that time. Water content from humidity when the jugs were opened could have changed powder density and potentially burn characteristics. Just speculating.

AA#7 is a great powder for 9Major. Slowest powder that easily makes major with 115's with a charge that easily fits in the case.

    That's great to know!

Are you using the same jug of powder from 2015 and if so how has it been stored? Also if it’s a different lot of powder from what you were loading in 2015 you will get variation and have to rework a load.

I "think" it was from the same jug, but not absolutely sure. It was a couple of years ago.
    :)

It was in a cabinet in the garage the entire time. Not sure if that is a good/bad place to store powder.

Different production lots of primers, powder, bullets, and cases will all play a part.

Slower bullets will be in the bore longer, allowing the muzzle to rise more before the bullet exits, resulting in higher impact point compared to the faster load.  Not knowing the range, it's hard to say if the 1" difference is reasonable.  For a 45 fps difference, it seems more than expected at handgun ranges.

Ahhh. That makes sense, never thought of that!
And for what it's worth, I sight in my Open gun at 15 yards.
    Thanks for the post!
