There’s a few threads about this, but the short version is that ports vent gas off so that there’s less perceived recoil since there is less gas (and mass) following the bullet out the barrel. These are usually most effective somewhere around 2-4” in a revolver.

Alec, hit us with a picture of effective ports.

Compensators collect the gas in a chamber, let it expand, then force it up to fight against rise.

Ports reduce felt recoil, comps oppose muzzle rise.

    Here’s a properly compensated gun:

Would you please post more picture of this :) It looks too good for just "spy shots" :)

  2. I'm sorry to revive such an old thread, which has already had a couple of lives. I did search and found this and one other thread for clean(er/est) powder.

I'm looking to start reloading for light 38s, maybe 38 short colt and light/minor 9mm, all for revolver.

From what I read in this thread and the other one, is that it is "Hodgdon Clays" that is clean(er) at light power loads. Any more latest comments/inputs will be appreciated.

  3. Reading all this I am struck with two thoughts, some of this may have already been said above in a different way, so I apologize for that:

    1. Most "traditional" shooting sports that I knew of had some level of speed, accuracy rating, power factor, movement and strategy. It was such an equipment race, sometimes too intimidating. Oh, you can shoot with what you already own. Yeah, not entirely :) I'm really glad that MDs and ranges are allowing more and more sports that take away one or two or more of those factors away for shooters that were deterred by either of those.

    2. It's just much more refreshing that there are so many more options to shoot these days. When I first moved to the US, 20+ years ago, the most you could do was shoot trap/skeet and shoot at paper targets. These days, there's a match almost every weekend within a 100 mile radius. The sport is growing and I hope we don't get paralysis by analysis and just do whatever we can to provide more shooting opportunities to the young and old alike. I had proposed at our local steel match that we let all juniors under 12 get to shoot free when shooting with an adult. Anything to get more and more shooters.

I will look for an AS match now :)

  4. The other way to skin this cat, and I think someone alluded/said this already is to see if the Glock trigger could be made "similar" to a 2011. Maybe single action, short(er) reset, hammer instead of firing pin, 70s (no firing pin block), etc.

The glock action already does half (or more of) the work of cycling the slide, ejecting, rechambering the next round... the other part(s), to cock the hammer or firing pin, reset the sear or trigger bar, the trigger need not going that far forward, etc. needs to be engineered and executed. It may or may not have the trigger pull safety, it could be an "option" per taste, similarly the thumb and grip safety could also be an option, per shooter preference or sport.

While we're at it, maybe think about a fixed barrel/sights ;)

The Laugo Alien seems like an interesting design, I want to see how that pans out.

True, if Ruger starts selling an 8 shot SRH in 9mm I will buy one.

In one the recent ShootingUSA shows where they showed a steel challenge match, I did see Dave Olhasso shoot, what looked like to me an 8shot "franken-Ruger". I think its the new SRH 8shot with a longer custom barrel. So, I'm hoping they come out with one for the general market.

I have a couple of screen grabs, but I don't know if it's ok to post here.

  7. Did you look into Tactical solutions 22 upper, they also make mags for the 2011 for the 22. Just another suggestion/option.

There is a group on Facebook called Rimfire Raceguns, you can look at the posts without joining. Have a look, there are a few 2211s on there, especially by Kurt Grimes. I've learned a few things on there, I'm sure you will too, that will help you in your eventual build.

Do post your final build here for us to see :).

  8. I put an X-Frame Hogue grip on one of my N-Frames. It covers the back strap and is, what feels to me overall, thicker than a normal N-Frame Hogue. I like that grip. I wish Hogue made an X-Frame big butt grip.
