Depending on what is wrong with your nickel you could probably buff out all of the imperfections.

A brass or silver polish can remove all the light stuff.

A polishing compound can get rid of the heavier stuff.

    Just don't over do it.

This is flat e-nickel factory Colt finnish... which is not a finish that could be improved with any of these sugggestions (to my knowledge)

This is a 35 year old gun and it needs to have the finish stripped. It's a Combat Commander and I want to use it as a base gun for a re-build.

Didn't realize it was a flat e-nickel finish, your right, what I suggested won't work.

I'm used to seeing bright nickel, guess I just assumed.

If your going to keep the finish as it is your not going to have to strip it completely, but if your going to put any other finish on it, then the old nickel is going to have to go.

Check with some of your local platers, they should be able to do it for you.

If you can't find one let me know, I know of a couple here in New York that can do it for you.

    Good luck on your project.

  2. This is a tiny bit of a drift...(sorry Nemo).... but how do they take off e-nickle???? Sand blast???? I have a Colt that needs a make over.

Acid strip, it takes forever to remove nickel that way depending on the thickness.

If you sandblast it there is a good chance of blowing all of the tolerances.

Just don't over do it. e-nickel is tuff stuff!!

  3. Would it simply be a matter of swapping in a .40 barrel so that I could shoot my .40 reloads or would I have to buy the whole top end (which still isn't too expensive). I do reload a little bit of 10mm, but it'd be nice to be able to use my .40 major stuff in it as well...which would also make it a viable backup Limited rig with nothing more than a holster and maybe 5 mags with extensions from Henning.

10mm brass :surprise: let me know if you decide to get rid of any!!!

I've got some good news for you, there is no need to purchase a new top end.

The breech and extractor for a 10mm and 40 are the same.

As long as you mags will accommodate the extra length of the 10mm over the 40 all you need is a 10mm barrel fitted to your current slide.

    Cant find a 10mm barrel??

A .40 barrel can be reamed to 10mm.

As long as everything is fitted properly you should be good to go.

PS, Need some help getting rid of 10mm?? I'll be the first to volunteer

I'll let you know if I get overrun with extra 10mm brass!

I know the extractor and breach are the same, which is why I was thinking a barrel swap would be all that's required. I'm not sure they can ream a .40 barrel to 10 because of the polygonal rifling, but I don't see why they wouldn't sell just a barrel since they list both barrels and top ends for most of their guns already.

The other good thing is that since I load .40 long, the same mags should work perfectly. I just really enjoy shooting 10mm and this sorta struck me like "duh, why didn't you think of that before?".

I think a call to Henning, as suggested by Krautwagon is in order. R,

I forgot that they have poly rifling, your right that won't work out.

    Otherwise it should perform.

I'd shoot 10mm more if it wasn't so hard to find brass at a reasonable price.

I lose alot to the grass shooting in the summer.

Thanks for keeping me in mind on the brass!!

  5. I think you want to be around 6.0 grains probably a hair more with a 170-180. 7.5 grains is well over max in my manuals.

I agree, with a plated 180gr bullet and 6.0gr unique run perfectly thru my Ultra Ten.

Cronoed between 998 and 1020 fps, and the recoil isn't that bad either.

  6. Were having the same problem, guess it's just the sign of the times.

All of our dead weight went a little over a month ago, and I can see another round coming next month.

I'm safe for another couple of rounds.

Some times it's nice knowing too much. :surprise:

Hope everyone out there keeps their job.

On the plus side though.....more time to shoot................... or practice anyway.

  7. I wouldn't drop the slide on an empty chamber...no need to do so.

Besides, I don't often lock the slide back anyway. When I unload to show clear...I drop the mag, rack the slide to eject the round in the chamber (I probably rack it twice...that would catch a mistake of leaving the mag in the gun)...then I hold the slide back with my off hand while I present the gun to the RO so that he/she can see it is clear...then I'll rack the slide a couple more times...and I'll look in there again myself (since it's my responsibility) to make sure it's empty...before pointing down range into the backstop and going "hammer down".

I do basically the same thing, I'll rack the slide a couple of times (one of my good habits ;) ), show clear while holding the slide open in my weak hand, let the slide go forward slowly, hammer down and holster.

Dropping the slide on an empty chamber can cause more problems than what it's worth, and most manufactures don't recommend it.

It's plain not worth taking the chance.

Would you beat on your gun with a hammer?? :surprise: basically the same thing.

  8. We have a local guy named Richard Stillhard. :roflol:

A local morning show radio host tried to get a hold of him.

Every time they called he would just hang up on them.

    Bet he's heard it all!!

  9. I know exactly how you feel, well almost.

I was in a rush to make a match last week, and like you I had everything laid out everywhere.

In that rush I grabbed everything but my back-up gun.

    Needless to say I couldn't shot back-up.

I felt stupid after loading up my mags and putting all my gear on to find out I had no gun... :surprise:

Hope you get your gun fixed soon!!

  10. I'm going to have to side with zhunter.

I shoot a .45 in single stack but if I had to do it all again, I'd go .40.

If you are able to try a few that you interested in and pick the one you like the best.

That will work out better than any of the advice we could give.

I shoot a Springfield loaded, I do better with that than I do with the Colt that I spent almost twice as much for.

A good friend of mine shoots a Kimber and he's very happy with it.

    Welcome and good luck

  11. Bought the wife a car.

(now she's on the road to her gilfriends in CT ;) )

    Bought her a GPS too.

(now I don't mind her telling me where to go <_< )

    She bought me a truck.

(I traded my old one for a motorcycle :goof: )

As soon as I can steal the GPS away from her the SV is going to Dan Bedell.

    Spoiled the grand kids.

(Gave the kids a break, most of them don't make noise :goof: )

...But the only thing that really made my Christmas is when the youngest grand son gave me a big hug and didn't let go.

Don't think I have alot of money, we've been saving for most of this for a loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnggg time.

All of the gifts mean nothing wthout family to share it with.

  12. 180 bear creek with 4.6grns TG shoots very nice

Used to load exactly like that until bear creek disappeared from the web.

Now I use 180gr. copper plated with 4.2 Titegroup.

Think I'm going to bump it up though, the crono will have the last say on the subject.
