  1. Listen to Howard Stern.

Anyone who can't reload AND listen to the radio should probably not own guns.* No offense guys, but this task is not something that takes all your mental capacity. There are only a few things going on, and you merely need to be attentive to the process.

Driving a car is more complicated, and the stakes are much higher. I'll bet you all have listened to the radio AND eaten AND talked to someone while driving a car.

I'm not saying you single-taskers are doing anything wrong, do what works for you. For me, it's the Howard Stern show. When he makes me laugh too hard, I'll slow down a little.

    * I'm kidding. Lighten up! :)

  2. I've just recently gotten back into shooting after many years off. Today I was shooting my second match, and I've been looking forward to it all month.

On my 3rd shot, my front sight fell off! I finished the stage (poorly) with no front sight. A couple of no-shoots paid the highest price. :(

After that stage, I went over to the safety-table, and happened to find a piece of duct-tape. Lightbulb lit up in my head, I reached down, picked up a twig, and minutes later, I had a new dot front sight!

Finished the match, hit a lot of targets, and had a good laugh about it.

What are some of the things you've done when you've run into problems?

Yes, today's match-gun was a 65 year-old surplus Colt. It's been through a couple of wars, and is older than me, so I'll forgive it the occasional failure.

  3. He'll be doing a couple of free concerts here at the New York State Fair in a couple of weeks.

Last time he was here, he worked in a bit of social commentary between songs. While I don't agree with all he said, it was a good time. And I'll be there for both shows again this year!

  4. Safety glasses aren't one of those things where "you get what you pay for". You can find safety glasses with whatever tint you want, and decent optical clarity for less than $20.

If you spend more for your safety glasses, you're doing it for fashion only (unless they are prescription).

  5. I don't think anything he said was unreasonable. He was the best. In fact, he still IS the best (for now).

Think about that for a little bit. Being the best at something. Not the best in your club, not the best you've ever seen, not the best in the world, but the best in all of history.

I'm actual a little sick of athletes having to be all modest (worst are the scripted NASCAR marketing wankers drivers). If you scored a big goal in a local pickup ball-game, you'd do a little celebrating and bragging. If you were the the best in all of history at something, you SHOULD be allowed to be a bit immodest.

As for inviting him.... well.... nobody invited the '72 Dolphins to last year's SuperBowl, either!

  6. Thanks for the info, everyone.

There are several pre-ban mags on the website to choose from. This one looks most like mine (+2 base)

    Product# POML45 (bottom of this page: http://www.paraproshop.com/subcategory_50.htm)

    This is a pre-ban magazine for the DCX1445E, DX1445E, DX1445S, PX1445S, PX1445E BH, RX1445E, RX1445E CB, RX1445S, SX1445S and TX1445S.

    (This magazine also fits the previous Para models: P1445 / PX1445E MB / PCX1445 / S1445 / D1445 / T1445 / 14.45 LDA / 14.45 LDA Limited.)

This pre-ban high capacity magazine holds 15-Rounds of .45ACP ammo, and has a black finish.

Brian, Do you think this will work in my gun?

  7. I have an old Para .45ACP. Old like, Para didn't make guns back then, just frames. I bought it used over 15 years ago.

I don't know what model it is, and I want to buy magazines for it. Do .45 (double-stack) mags for a Para fit in any wide-body Para?

Also, what's the best place for mags? Ideally, I'd get pre-ban ones, but I doubt that's possible. If not pre-ban, I'd need to buy 10-round mags. :(

  8. Whatever you do, don't get the cheapo GunVault clone from Gander Mountain. I forget the brand name.

I just bought one and gave it a little test. Drop it on its side, and the door will just pop open. Not a high drop, just 5-8 inches over carpet. The latch is just spring-closed, and the jolt of the drop allows the latch to overcome the spring, and open the door.

It will be going back to GM, with a warning to the manager that they are selling a product with a serious liabilty flaw.
