  1. Remove material under the grips from the frame. I think the main spring housing comes with the frame, ask for the aluminum one.

Another excellent idea! Thank you. I was hesitant to start this post, but it's already been immensely helpful.

I assume a standard frame is lighter than a recon/railed frame?

  2. Here is one approach:

    Springfield Range Officer 9mm:

    Dawson fiber optic front sight:

    Cylinder&Slide tactical II trigger kit:

EGW 1911 Silverline blue bolt-on mag well / flat checkered mainspring housing:

Dawson 9mm magazines 10-round with polymer baseplates:

Regular walnut grips (will have to research source and update this later):

    Remove OEM sear, disconnector, hammer.

Remove OEM mainspring housing and internals.

Install EGW mainspring housing and magwell.

    Install trigger kit.

Use OEM rear sight, recoil spring, guide, and plug.

    Install Dawson front sight.

Result is 42.6 ounces with an empty magazine. Very accurate.

    Chris

Thank you! That is very close to what I am running right now for a Springfield RO 9mm for Steel Challenge. Is there much of a difference between the Dawsons with the plastic base pad and the aluminum? I currently run 001018s.

  3. Hello: The Caspian Race Ready frame build I had would fit the box. If you need to make it lighter you can use a plastic mainspring housing and titanium parts. You can also turn down the barrel under the slide or flat side the barrel. You can also tri top the slide as well as cutting deeper grasping grooves. Light weight grips is the last way to lighten it. Hope this helps. Thanks, Eric

Thank you. Turning down the barrel was not something I had thought of. The slide is currently bare and rounded at the top, so tri cutting and making the serrations deeper and wider are also good ideas. I have a set of VZ Recons I bought off the Classifieds here on my Springfield 9mm RO that I like a lot. But they are noticeably heavier than the stock wood ones. I'll call up VZ and see if I can get a weight on both those and the wood ones they make also.

  4. As I put together a parts list and look at weight, does anyone have suggestions? I know a 9mm barrel weighs more than the 45 and 40s, but does anyone have advice on what parts to use/stay away from to keep under weight.

Also, do the Caspian Race Ready frames have any issues fitting in the box? I have never seen one in person, but I have a Caspian slide I picked up off a prize table I would like to use for this build.

ETA - This will be fit and assembled by my smith, but I am going to be getting the parts together over the next few months to spread out the costs a bit.

  5. Just a Springfield RO in 9mm, but I've got plans for her. I shot this pistol as is, stock minus the VZ Grips at our last Steel Challenge and won SS division and B Overall.

    Work to be done:
    - Dawson Fiber .100 front sight
    - Ambi Wide Thumb Safety
    - Dawson Toolless Guide Rod w/ 7lb spring

    - Dawson Mag Release with button
    - S&A Magwell
    - EGW for the hammer/mainspring/etc
    - SV Flat Curved Trigger

  6. Thank much to everyone for the helpful comments. I've got a lot to consider still. It's probably a comforting fact that all these options have a fair level of support.

I think the CRP Trojans from Dawson are a pretty good way to go.

I only just became aware of this model. It seems like the price difference is pretty small to to get the magwell and mag release upgrade. I saw one in some classifieds with a few mags for 1200. I couldn't see that direct from Dawson included any mags, so seems like like a good deal.

    Too many choices!

I don't work for Dawson or STI, so this isn't a plug. My team is also not currently sponsored by either. That being said, I am pretty sure the CRP Trojans come with a toolless guide rod also.

Pretty good deal for an STI I think. Not sure if someone up North or other parts of the country offer something similar.

  7. For what it's worth, I have an RO 9mm with about 500 rounds through it. Very pleased with the pistol vs the cost. I won my division in the first Steel Challenge match I shot with the gun. I bought 6 of the Dawson 10 rounders and a friend made me a holster, so I don't have a lot into this so far. The gun is fast and handles well. I got a good deal on some VZ grips on the classifieds and that's the only thing I have done to the gun. I plan on getting a Dawson front, ambi safety, Dawson Toolless Guide Rod with a 9lb and S&A Magwell. Eventually I would like to replace the rear sight, but no hurry for that.

I am a B shooter creeping up on A class and I think it's pretty cool I can take this gun out of the box, hit a match and be successful with very little time and no work on the gun. Don't get me wrong, I still want a STI, but I think this is a very good bargin. Especially if you are ADHD when it comes to shooting and constantly switching from Production, to Limited to SS.

I'll try to post a pic up later because I know everyone likes pics.

ETA - I would get the best you can afford; however, at the RO price point, it makes it much easier grabbing mags and upgrades. I think the CRP Trojans from Dawson are a pretty good way to go. And some pics:

  8. I just bought some of Dawson's 10 rounders. I was very pleased with them initially but am going to have to give them a call tomorrow. 2 of the 5 I bought will only load 9 rounds and one of those two will not lock the slide. I shot 100 rounds with them today and they had zero malfunctions except failing to lock the slide. Just perplexed why 3 would easily fit 10 and be reloadable and 2 will only fit 9 with no hope of a 10th.

  9. I just got a Springfield RO 9mm and am very pleased. I plan on using the 400 I didn't spend on the STI to get mags and the rest of the gear to compete. I shot a few runs on some Steel Challenge with it tonight and di very well. First time every shooting the pistol and I think it's competition ready. Sure I want to swap the front sight for a Dawson, change the grips, and change out some other parts - but the gun ran and was accurate.

This isn't a post to trash the STI, but I think you get a lot of bang for the buck with this particular pistol. I am very pleased so far. Pretty cool to have never shot it, pull it out o fthe box and just start making good runs on some Steel Challenge.

  10. I had the same issue. I tried them on my g17 mags for my g34 and got a full 23 rounds in the mag. Turns out I needed them for the 9mm mags anyways, so I just left them on the g17 mags, but I may end up getting some more and try to tune them per the videos.

    Glad this got posted.

  11. So is this a good thread to help pimp the marksmanship team I helped start at my department? :roflol:

Despite what has been said, and there are lot of valid points, we can all agree that more training is a good thing. Whether it's weapon manipulation, marksmanship or tactics, something is better than nothing. Gunfighting is more than accurate rounds on target, but that certainly is a deciding factor in gun fights. Rather than argue points that have already been made, I would just like to suggest er all do the same thing for cops that we should be doing for anyone interested in firearms. Encourage them, try to get them to a match and then be humble in helping them. Grow the shooting sports. Getting LE/MIL guys involved in shooting sports is obviously going to have a positive effect on their survivability plus its great PR for the shooting community. Use encouragement and not scorn. We all want the same goal. I knew I wanted to be a cop for a long time and just got lucky that Don Hardy took me to my first shooting match. I got even luckier when he, Trapr, Robert, Jack, Sheldon, Marisa, Roy and all the other SA/Austin area folks took time and energy to help teach me how to shoot. I would have never known anything like USPSA even existed otherwise. In turn I think I have a positive influence on officers I work with and have trained. It's good to see so many people passionate about training and staying safe. We all live in the same neighborhoods and we all have a responsibility to look out for each other.

This certainly has been an interesting read. If anyone is interested in what we're doing, go take a look at our website and if you do Facebook, give us a "like" please. www.apdmarksmanshipteam.org

  12. IDEA TIME!!!!!

A sling and holster line that eases those pesky trips to the john....

....dare I say: BROWN FORCE TACTICAL GEAR

Of course, I leave the details to others................................

    ............and the royalties..............

    ericm

That literally made me laugh out loud. You trying to wake my kid?!

If you can take the time to remove the holstered gun, I don't understand the resistance to just bagging at the safe table. I have seen plenty of folk's holsters break. The Safariland gear is very trick and just plain genius, but bagging it is the safest route and leaves less chance for an accident, mistake, or equipment failure.

That being said, I am really trying hard to resist switching over all my belts to 1 belt and one system..... (guess what I was searching that got me into this thread...)

  13. We are all pussyfooting around the same issues and rumors.

I watched stages on Thursday incognito (no jersey or shooting paraphernalia) and watched ROs shoot stage 1, 12, and watched a 3GN pro shooter to thru the shoot house stage.

Stage 1....the ROs watched a fellow RO shoot the static steel and poppers to the side with the stage pistol, some tried the plate rack too. I overheard "that's how you gotta shoot it, shoot the poppers and you don't have to reload your shotgun". When we shot it, the plate rack appeared to be at a slightly different angle (perspective) but we were told we could ONLY engage the static steel with the stage gun.

Stage 12....the exact issue was observed, and I was later told by an RO that I will not name, that all you have to do is bump your handguard an inch either way for a new position.

I watched the Pro Series shooter shoot the shoot house stage twice....because the ROs never mentioned the fault line. Rumor has it, the ROs and those that shot with them may not have had to observe the fault line. Which would allow them to use a single shooting window and would explain how their stage times were superhuman.

I've heard additional rumors about steel being added to the long range stage, RO's and those shooting with RO's getting to RO for each other in a group of two buddies as they ran thru stages. I can't confirm those like what I personally witnessed and cannot give them weight until someone does......but some people either shot the match of their lives, or took a gun off the table in exchange for their soul!

There were some great ROs there who I want to, again, thank for their hard work and thankless efforts. I'll be an RO twice this year and hope I do a job that resembles what you did! Unfortunately there was an RO or two with a power trip and no working knowledge of major match rules or the match rules from the match they were an RO for. If you are suffering from Napoleon Syndrome, don't be an RO.....your help isn't wanted! To the rest of the ROs, I hope you were not judged by others due to the actions of the few.

I'm fully aware my post here may ruffle some feathers....the people who matter know me and what I'm about, and if I ruffled your feathers....you aren't one of them!

So stage 1 was tossed and did not effect scores. While tossing a stage is stinks, especially for the ROs who ran it all week in the sun, it happens and has happened on more than one major match I have shot. It's much better to not have to toss a stage, but by tossing the stage, these issues are officially addressed and dealth with.

Stage 12, name names or atleast email staff with the name so that issue can be addressed. Being told in person at the match at the time it occurred probably would have been the most effective and best way to deal with this issue. One of the hardest aspects to a major match is finding enough people to staff it and them being up to speed to run it. It is difficult with a large match to monitor and QA every RO through the whole match. Obviously some ROs are stronger than others and they get put on point and are part of a chain of command, so to speak. But if a competitor does not approach the match directors or range officers with an issue at the time it occurs, it is a lot harder to police and correct. I am not saying it's easy to complain over the internet, but it sure is a lot harder to address that issue after the match over the internet.

Which Pro series shooter did you watch run the shoot house 2x. I ran a large number of ROs through the house and all of them observed the charge line with was painted brightly and installed Wednesday morning I believe. What's the super human time?

Again, rumors on the long range, who said what? Who was witness. Also, what is the minimum number of ROs allowed to run each other through a stage. Numerous ROs had to run the whole match in a day, others due to work or child care had to work in during match day. The range is not own by the club and we do not have free reign over the facility. There are a limited number of hours to shoot ROs through the match. What is the correct SOP (standard operating procedure) for getting all the ROs through the match? There were several ROs that did not even get to shoot the match, but just worked it. I appreciate your postive notes, but the complaints would be more helpful with so more suggestions on what you deem was the correct way to do things.

No worries on ruffling feathers, hopefully you see this as a positive attempt to engage your concerns while looking for more insight.

  14. Many thanks to the RO's who worked this match as its a thankless and tiring job and thanks to the generous sponsors.

That said, I fully agree with the other comments. There were stage times posted that are simply impossible. I will never shoot this match again and will advise others of the same.

Which times/scores are you referring to? If you are going to take issue, it would be helpful to outline your complaint in full. All the scores are posted, so it should not be hard to reference which stages and times are deemed impossible. Serious here, not being a smart %$$.

Also, I sat in the tent and watched folks walk the prize table. Which ROs are folks inferring cheated and were "too high on the list for ROs..." From just a quick glance at the Tac Optics scores, I see 3 ROs in the top 20. Doug Johnson, Sheldon Carruth and Eric Wise. 3/20 = 15%. I don't think anyone who knows Dough Johnson is going to question his skill or intergrity. Obviously from several posts people are directly questioning Sheldon's, Eric Wise is also an excellent shooter for folks familiar with him. If you bump that out to the top 30 competitors, I see another RO in that list, Jonathan Slayton, who came in 21st. He is also an excellent shooter and that put the percentage of ROs in the top spots at 13ish%. If my math is wrong please correct it. I am rather tired at the moment. If there are ROs in that list I missed, please point them out.

What percentage of ROs is acceptable in each break down of finish? Say top 10, 20-30, 30-50, 50-75 and so on? With the first 7 competitors all receiving the same pistol and the number of items on the table, the value between say a 30th and a 35th place finish did not appear to be much at all. Especially in comparision to most of the other matches I have shot. Frankly I look at the list and a lot of the names I see are falling into line with where they have been at other major matches. I am not seeing a gleaming turd in bucket of diamonds. If you do, point it out and name names.

Seems it would be much easier to move forward and address issues if people named names and were straight forward rather than falling back on the "I heard rumors, purple monkey dishwasher."
