  1. Thanks for the advice. I just ordered a Schuemann AET barrel. I have been shooting my Marvel conversion unit with a C-More and it takes some getting used to when I switch from my limited gun. I'll probably order a mount in the next month or so. Thanks for the help. By the way HSmith, I have three pre-ban SVI 126mm mags with Dawson +2's, what are the odds they will work without tuning? I planned on buying(if I can find them) some SVI 140's. Do all mags need tuning for 9mm?

  2. I'm still collecting parts for an open build. What is the lowest mount I can get, and still not have major problems(9mm gun). I've seen the Millenium canted mount, I just don't know if like the position of it. Does anybody have a decent photo of the Double Tap. Their site photo is really bad.

  3. Flex, resale is one of things I'm thinking about. If I build a gun that I know can make major with no problem, it seems like I'm not limiting myself to steel shooters. I guess that's why I'm thinking a full size with some slide lightning. I agree with you on the weight issue, I think I will prefer a slightly heavier gun. One more question, how do most people finish out the build as far as frame parts, do they go with the completion kits, or buy parts individually?

  4. I seem to be leaning toward a 5 inch gun. I have only shot one open gun, a full size in 40 cal(Flyin40). What are he disadvantages of a lightened 5 inch compared to a shorty, are we talking 2-3 ounces. At this point I'm shooting an Edge and don't know how a light gun would feel, I guess I'm trying to split the difference. I do like the looks of the Brazos comp. HSmith, Thanks for the heads up on the frame, I guess I was just trying to reduce the pain of the build.

  5. I'm in the process of deciding about which parts to purchase for an open gun. I plan on using the lower from my Eagle and adding a Koenig hammer. I was thinking about purchasing an STI slide, and possibly a Brazos modified S-2 comp. At this point I don't plan on popple holes. I'm hearing that some smith's prefer non bull barrels and cone type comps for weight reasons(slide speed?). I'm looking for general observations on the slide/barrel/comp issue. Being new to open guns, and the amount of money this is going to cost, I'd like to get this close to right from the beginning. What are some known good combinations. I want the gun primarily for steel, but would like the ability to shoot major if necessary. Thanks in advance.

  6. I have an older Marvel Unit 1 with the rib and no sights. I mounted a C-More in the rearmost position on the rib. I have fired less than 500 rounds thru it so far and am starting to notice some wear on the slide that does not look right. The top of the flat portion of the slide behind the breechface seems to be making contact with the rear(bottom) of the mounting rib. I have lubed that area, but it still seems to be making contact at some point during firing. I did not initially notice, but after firing 100 or so rounds the guide rod seems to be loosening up some. Is the guide rod the problem, or do I need to move the C-More forward some.

  7. Hey Flex, yes, I shoot at Big Darby. They don't have any IPSC or steel match stuff right now. I don't know if they plan on it. It's a public range, and I think that scheduling can be an issue, as well as an inconvenience to the paying members, but that's only a guess on my part. They do have steel, and thats what I practice on. I have shot one steel match at PCSI this year. I forgot how much fun that was. I would like to see Big Darby have some steel match's, I know I would shoot them. Big Darby does not have official steel challenge type targets though, the round plates and large squares. I have never shot an IPSC match or qualifier, but I do have an Edge 40 cal. I guess part of my question dealt with getting a gun that capable of shooting major, as well as having reasonable resale. I guess I wanted the 9mm because I can get a decent supply of brass. Do you shoot with Flyin40 at PCSI?

  8. I am in the process of trying to figure out what type of open gun to buy. I have made up my mind that I want to shoot 9mm since I can get a good supply of free brass. My primary purpose is to shoot steel. Should I consider the STI Steelmaster, or should I look more to the Trubore 9mm(major) and attempt to tune it to 9mm minor(light recoilmaster?). I guess I am looking for the best of both worlds, so if I ever get the impulse to try IPSC the gun will be capable of making major. A second question would be resale, would there be any real difference between to two if I decided to sell.

  9. I currently have a factory STI Eagle 38super. I made the mistake of shooting an open gun the other day, and am considering having my Eagle turned into a open gun. I want to keep the cost to a minimum, so my question is can I use the same slide and purchase an STI comp/barrel. I assume the the front sight cut would be an issue, as well as the rear sight cut, when they are removed. I am not shooting IPSC type matches, but love shooting steel. If I do the conversion, am I better off going 9mm. I have pretty much an unlimited supply of 40 cal brass, and would consider a 40 Open gun, but I don't think 38 super slide would work. Am I better off just selling my current gun and buying an open gun, or converting my current gun.

  10. I have an STI Eagle 38SC that I want to convert to 9mm. I have a source for free once fired 9mm brass. I plan on useing the gun for steel, and maybe IDPA. My question is can I use my current SVI 38 Super tubes for 9mm, or do they need to be tuned. The tubes are older 126 mm SVI tubes with Dawson +2 pads. Also, I'm looking for a few smith's with decent turn around time that can fit a new barrel and hardcrome the gun. Thanks.
