  1. As most of you might know, I'm 18 years old. I guess it's that time when I go out to make a life for myself, and I'd like to continue shooting while all of this is happening. After assessing my options, it seems that moving to Cheyenne, WY is my best option. My uncle has offered me a consistent job there, which means a more flexible schedule for school and shooting. There is also relative low cost of living and minimal restrictions on firearms purchase/ownership. The seemingly "extra" funds due to lowered cost of living will allow me to shoot much more than I ever could if I was to rent a $2000/mo appartment in CA... not to mention school and every tax known to modern man...

If all goes as planned, I'll be moved and on my own within the next month and a half or so. What kind of USPSA action is around Cheyenne (within a reasonable driving radius).

I'm gunna need friends! So help me out everyone! Who's there? What's there to shoot? Where is an FFL to transfer my guns?

I know it will be a great move and I can't wait to be out doing my own thing and finally shooting some more.

    Thanks BEnoverse!

  2. Was thinking of my kid as a candidate... then I saw this:

"Applicants must be at least 21 years of age..." Damn... he's only 18 :(

He'd lose out in the wooden pallet throwing into the bon-fire event. laugh.gif

I'd only lose if it was a personal event. If it was a team event, then Adrian and I would clean house.

    :roflol:

  3. I'm just going to end this conflict and say that neither chris nor micah can stand up to Adrian, who shoots a stock glock in open division and puts 24 rounds of 9mm in a standard-legal magazine...

    :roflol:

and micah, your bullets might be tumbling because you forgot to put powder in your cases, that's part of the "making major" process that we go through in limited division. i know you woulnd't know these things, so it's alright.

  4. There is a lot of good advice in this thread. I believe that you should find a relatively inexpensive gun that fits your hands, and is shootable, and just shoot the snot out of it. After a season or two, you'll kinda know what you want. I have a plenty of gunsmith friends that can make left-handed everything, including slide stop. It's just a function of knowing what's out there, so go shoot and stay involved. Soon enough you'll have your bearing in the shooting world, and from there you can pursue a custom gun.

  5. Well, I was sick this weekend, but I thought I could just hack it and rest after the match on saturday. Negative... I shot with a fever and serious cough all day. I was really weak, and looking back, it was probably the worst thing I could have done. The results are here... and they are not pretty: Norco Running Gun Saturday 15 May 2010

I felt so bad after the match, I could care less about the shooting, and pretty much just laid out in the car semi-conscious while my parents drove the 2-hour drive home and took care of me.

After being up sick until i lost consciousness at 2am, I must not have learned my lesson... I set my alarm on Sunday morning for 7am... And I'm up and at 'em. I "felt fine" to shoot the local match here in town. To my surprise, it was a relatively (to Norco on Saturday) great day, as far as shooting is concerned. I only dropped 1 miss and 1 no-shoot in the match, which is 2 more pen. than I am used to having in a regular 6-stage match, but I was content that I didn't zero every stage lol. As far as the health goes, I started coughing up blood on the first stage, and basically just ignored it throughout the match. I'm still awaiting results, but now my dad has confined me to "sick bay" so I'm pretty much on serious lock-down lol. I'll post the local match (Sunday's) results as soon as they are up.

    :D

  6. I have been wearing these for a while: Merrel MOAB Ventilator Mid. They are a little more pricey that the Nike Land Sharks I used to wear, but i am entirely satisfied with their enhanced performance. They are more versatile and nearly as aggressive that cleats, as light as running shoes, waterproof, supportive of the ankle, and all around hardcore. They are comfortable enough to wear for as long as you want and super breathable. I have yet to encounter a terrain that these do not work well in.

  7. How bad are CCI primers? I asked Bill this last night as well: I have 2900 primers, and 2k of them are CCI. I am thinking that I will use the CCI for club matches, and the 900 Federals for major matches.

How bad are they? Not bad, especially if you don't cut your striker spring in half then stretch it back out like Adrian does. If you just use a masculine striker spring, then you're in business.

...or you could melt your glocks down to pure plastic and maybe mold a holster and pouches for the STI you will eventually end up using...

  8. Coolest thread I've seen in days...

Could I get the source documents from which those quotes were taken? Or at least the authors?

    Thanks!

  9. I shot out local Tuesday night match yesterday. I placed 5th overall and won production. I had at least 1 problem with my gun on each stage. My M&P has been giving me a lot of problems from failure to chamber and failure to extract. I am sending it back to S&W and hope they will fix it.

On another note, I am going to start getting in shape and go to the gym.

    Jason,

Talk to me about your fitness program if you want. I've been doing it professionally for 15 years... Good match Tuesday night. Wish I'd have been there to challenge you! Hope S&W gets your gun straight. That said, if you need one, you can run mine.

There's stuff you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT do with weights at your age, mid-growth-spurt. We'll talk!

    Jeff

Okay! I'm out of that phase, build ME a fitness plan! lol :roflol:

  10. Okay, I just got the results back from the 2010 Sunshine State Games IPSC Match. It turns out that I placed 8th out of 56 shooters and top junior. I pretty excited about that. If I just continue to get all of my hits, I know I will place good at matches.

Here is some video except stage 3

    Stage 1

    Stage 2

    Stage 4

    Stage 5

    Stage 6

    Stage 7

    Stage 8

    Stage 9

    Tips are appreciated.

Nice shooting Jason. You are looking good.

Tips? Fix your grammar: "I pretty excited about that." :roflol:

    jk bro lol

  11. Nick,

Good job at SWPL yesterday (for an old guy :roflol: )! Your SS seems to work pretty well also!

    Later,

    Chuck

Thanks Chuck! I know, these old joints are getting crusty, next time you might have to carry my O2 tank through the stage while i shoot. :roflol:

Yeah, thanks! It's a good factory gun.

So... I shot at South West Pistol League on 25 April 2010. I shot my singlestack (with Bob Novak's awesome Techwell XT-TGO 1911 magwell) and my friend's borrowed 9mm Open gun.

The results can be found here: SWPL USPSA 25APR10 Match results

The video of my match in Open can be found here:

The video of my match in Single Stack can be found here:

    Analysis:

I had a great time shooting at SWPL. I always get to shoot with my friends and see great people. :D

This was one of the first times I re-entered and shot 2 divisions, so I was plenty distracted, which I think actually helped me. I achieved that "zone" described in my signature. I shot clean, with no penalties, and a couple make-ups here and there. I could have done without the make-ups, but I would rather be safe than sorry. It was a great match, and a great time.

On a completely different note, I would like to commend Gary C. (JohnGaultsGun) for pulling through and being a champ. Even with repetitive stress injuries to his leg, and all the prone shooting at the match, he stuck it out and finished with us, even winning a stage HOA in production! Nice work bro!

  12. Howdy Jim, welcome. I miss California. I got family in Lancaster and I worked in LA for a couple of years. LA is 2363.5 miles from my front door. My best drive time was 31.5 hours. Any who, welcome to the forums.

    ...but who's really counting?

    :roflol:

    Welcome to the forums.

Hit us up at Norco and SWPL sometime, the birthplace of our sport

  13. Check this out:

    Junior Shooter Camp

It's the MGM Targets/US Army Marksmanship Unit multi-day USPSA Junior camp. I've been there twice (since the first camp) and love 'em both. It's a junior-only thing, and they limit the applicants, so apply early.

It's about 4 days, and the last day is a mini-match, where the kids (lead by their AMU squad leader) shoot a couple stages and get to see how pros analyze stages and stuff. It's a fantastic learning experience. There's a Rob Leatham class for the parents usually too.

  14. Nice videos. The only reoccurring issues that I see are flailing the gun at crazy angles during the reload which keep the spent mag from dropping free and pulling the gun back too much/far after finishing a shooting position. That and stop looking for holes in the targets. What is your average points captured per stage? 80%? 90%? It seems like you are shooting super fast in some situations and then looking at the targets for hits followed by making up some shots. If you are not capturing 90% - 95% of the stage points then you are shooting too fast causing poor hits.

Other than that, your shooting and movement is looking really good. Keep up the good work

    Thanks

I noticed the mag thing shortly after I started shooting with that gun (which i borrowed from a friend), because the grip broke and i switched it with a stock untuned grip, so they wouldn't always fall out right, and I just kind of adapted. Using my limited gear, I don't really notice myself doing that much. I just need to standardize on one set of equipment and stop changing lol.

Nationals being the exception, I don't drop usually more than a couple C's for a stage, and rarely a D, and almost never a Miss. That's true on the latest two video's at least.

    Thanks for the feedback.

  15. I've been shooting on and off over the last month or two, depending on how much ammo i can scavenge lol. It hasn't been anything crazy, but I do have some videos finally.

The goal of my shooting is to simply shoot without mind, to simply maintain awareness. I'm relatively pleased with my performance lately.

I'll start posting regularly after the next match.

    Here are the vids (chronologically):

  16. I just need to forget more.

    Yes. And more often.

The Zone cannot be caught by chasing.

It appears, uninvited, when all forms of trying and caring have ceased.

    be

    This is epic.

This is exactly what I have been trying to do (ironically). :roflol:

And now that I have stop trying, it works... it's like a principle Law of effectiveness in psycho-physical or coordination-based actions.

  17. Most of the pistol shooting in our sport occurs between 7 and 25 yards. I don't think that the difference in potential/technical accuracy between a full-metal frame 19/2011 and a locking block-style polymer pistol affects such close ranges. Perceived accuracy is a whole different story. Even if a custom STI and a stock glock are shot off the bench and are accurate within 10% of eachother, a particular shooter may perceive a greater degree of accuracy with one over the other. When I started Limited, I shot a glock 22, then a 35, and now I have a 6" Benny Hill Limited gun. I personally learned two things: longer sight radius looks better, and 2011's feel better than polymer guns (to me of course). Both polymer guns as well as 1911/2011's are accurate enough for USPSA out of the box. Accuracy: "keeping your sights still and on target while you pull the trigger." <-------Do this!
