  1. Years ago I put the Arredondo one on......it's just a little piece of plastic (so not much weight)........You get greater leverage .......but you also wear out the switch.........

I always just left my scope on during the whole match.........Batteries are cheaper than new scopes or repairs...........Personally think they are all a bad idea..

  2. So, looking around BEnos (and exploring options for an open build myself), I've noticed that several options seem to be emerging in regards to alternative platforms for open builds. Just from my memory, I've seen Glocks, CZ's, Tanfos, Sphinx, XDm's, and even a Sig X-5 and a HKP7. While many of these are one-off builds, or "budget" builds, the fact that these guns are out and shooting speaks volumes. On the flipside Glocks, XDm's, and Tanfos offer pretty much everything you'd need for an open gun from the factory, or that's easily acquired from respected vendors. Argument could be made that those particular platforms are competitive even at the higher levels of our sport (Eric G being a shining example).

While the de facto standard in open still seems to be a 5" 2011 with a C-More riding on top, other options are certainly presenting themselves. The acceptance of 9mm major has allowed guns that have no chance of ever chambering a 38 super round to be considered as viable. Slide-mount mini-dots allow for optic solutions where a traditions frame mounted CMore is somewhat sketchy (or simply unwanted). The climbing cost for new 2011 builds (and the subsequent "cheaper" routes of the alternatives) is no doubt an issue to many looking to get a taste of the "dark side."

I dig the variety, and hope to continue to see it fostered in the future. Innovation is cool, and secretly I enjoy tinkering and exploring new shooting options almost as much as the actual shooting itself (definitely makes the winter pass faster). While only a fool would claim the death of the 2011 platform, I certainly think it has more competition now than it ever has, and this will only grow in the future. How long before it becomes commonplace to see Glocks and other polymer pistols showing up in winners circles?

Love to hear the thoughts/opinions from some of you guys who've been around for a while, or even those of you taking the road less traveled already. What platforms do you see really having legs? What is holding everyone back? What do you see as the new "innovation" channels for open division?

I would agree that there is more variety of manufacture in equiptment today, but IMO there hasn't been much "innovation" in open guns for 15 plus years...

No matter how many fancy swiss cheese holes you cut in your gun....what comp you choose....how short you make it......how shiney you polish your mags......etc. etc......

you still have basically the same gun.

OPEN gun = Semi Automatic , compensated, red dot, 38 caliber, high cap

  3. I owned 3 P9's.........and own about as many STI's now.......so I have a bit of an opinion :)

I literally had BOXES of spare parts for my P9's and many times had to do repairs on the gun DURING the match.....

1.Broken slide stops; even with the hardened Huening parts.

    2. unexplainable ejection problems

    3. cracked rail

    4. trigger jobs that just never would last due to slop in the sear housing.

5 Way more frame wear than a 1911.

    6. extractor tension problems all the time.

    7. back then there just werent' any parts for these guns also......

    8. frame was so hard that they recomended 2 taps per hole when drilling.........That's why you saw "limited" Tangfoglios with drilled and tapped holes in case you changed your mind on a scope.

All in all they were a pain to keep going.............That being said I think the newer large frame Tanfoglios now must be a lot better.....You don't hear a lot about people fighting them like you used to.

Would I change to a newer large frame Tanfoglio with the lates improvements over a 2011?.......No.......JMO

  4. Got a friend that wants to shoot single stack.....I'm an open guy and didn't have a clue as to what he should buy......

I thought that the DOH was legal but through further looking it says that it is not..

Also suggested he get Safariland 771 magpouches and checked the rule and it sales they must be less than 2 inches from the body.....I don't think that they are but wanted to check with you guys first...

    What equiptment should he get...

    Thanks a bunch,

    Joe

  5. I wouldn't worry too much about it ....Most of us are shooting a "copy" of some sort or another.........The only way to find out if they are any good is to buy one and try it...

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this one.......I own one of these..........It is a non-electric - holographic shotgun sight.........

Heads up ala C-more.....Holgraphic with a dot within a circle ala Bushnell Holo. :D

  6. I later check the gun and the hammer follows through when releasing the slide from the slide stop.

Since firing pin intertia is ruled out...it seems likely that upon impact, the hammer followed through, the slide wanting to go backwards simply tore the safety out if it's place, sending it a few yards away as described.

If it landed flat, that would be it IMO.

  7. Different scenario same result........I was RO'ng a guy once, he got to the last round to be fired on a stage and got a bulged 40 stuck in his gun.........Long story short, I tried the old "hold the slide and hit the grip" trick........It threw the firing pin into the primer, and blew lots of brass into my hand and into my chest..........It can happen, and I cringe evertime I see someone do it........That was the last time I tried to "help" someone

This sounds like ejector fire. The round became unstuck, slipped off the extractor and was jammed into the ejector. I have seen it happen. There is no way you can hit the grip hard enough with your hand to cause the firing pin to ignite the primer.

I respectufully disagree,...The round never became unstuck (untill it blew up).....it was nearly fully chambered, with the extractor fully locked into the brass's extactor cut.....

  8. It's quite common in series 70's and models with no firing pin safeties, that the firing pin moves forward when the pistol hits a hard surface(usually, on the floor). I believe an extra power firing pin spring should do the job.

I was DQ'ed a couple of months ago after the backup gun went off while I was loading. The drill started with the gun at position 3 in the holster-Ribas(magazine inserted, not loaded), after the beep, drawed+racked the slide, and the gun went off(hammer fell after the slide). After examining the backup gun(didn't use it for almost a year! and took it to the match in the morning, since I've had difficulties with the main one), the hammer hooks appeared to be worn out. Didn't take a chance, replaced both the hammer and sear, even the safeties, just to be on the safe side. A little tuning, works like a charm. Next time, I'll check it before the match.

Anyways, I'm happy to hear you're ok. Must have been a terrifying experience...I would have probably soiled myself!

If the gun hit on it's side the way Freddie describes it, I don't see any way it could have been caused by the firing pin moving due to striking a hard surface...that requires a muzzle down impact, not the gun hitting flat on it's side. R,

He says that the round was chambered and the safety on.......The only way for the gun to go off would be either the hammer failed, or firing pin interia.

  10. The idea has been around for a long time.....Actually a Barnhart trick.......he put a "welder's" magnet in his pocket and did the same thing years ago.........Nice to have something atached to the belt though.....would help to avoid the funny looks one might get.

  11. Does anyone know where to get lower STI grips for a good price?..............I want to get one to modify to my tastes........I have a hard time hacking on the one that came with the gun without having a spare incase something goes wrong....

    Thanks a bunch,

    Joe

  12. I had 3 p9's.....Two built by "Don" from Arizona.........I had so many extra parts to keep the guns going it was nuts.......My honest answer is a reluctant yes, but for how long.....

I'm thinking Eric has multiple guns to shoot and @!^*loads of parts to keep them going too.

  13. Most people just repeat what they hear or they just plain don't know.

I've shot lead in my super (with comp) for years.....Here's how I do it:

Get an Outers Foul Out machine (nice to have even if you only shoot jacketed). Wrap the comp with a couple layers of teflon plumber's tape (97cents at any hardware store) . Hook up the machine normally and fill the barrell all the way into the comp. It will clean ALL the lead out of the barrell and the comp as well. You only have to do this maybe every 5 to 6 matches to keep up on it.

I shot heavier bullets when the PF was 175 and I still do, but I have buddies that shoot as light as 125grns.

Also I use "lead out wipes" cut for patches to clean the bore....It cleans the wax.

It's not as big a deal as most people think and I've never had SO much smoke that I couldn't see the targets......That's just a plain myth.
