Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I have a dillon 550. I am interested in loading hunting ammo, a few hundred rounds a year. That is 1" groups for my 30 06 bolt gun. Also 1/2" groups for my .204 varmint gun. Maybe 6.5 x 55 that I hope to buy.) I mention this info cause: 1) I expect to get as good accuracy as I get with factory ammo. 2) I am not needing better accuracy. I have a new 550b. A dillon beam scale. RCBS manual case trimmer. Lyman plastic powder trickler and funnel thing for the scale. What additional equipment do I need? What additional equipment is nice to have? What dies work best?
  2. fixes: I polished the bottom of the slide till it was shiny by working it hard with a heavy duty scratch pad. Add a MT 45 acp case to top of tube follower. regular maintenance: Run a q tip wet with isopropal through primer tube. Keep tube follower clean when re priming. Do not just lay on bench. Clean slide and base with isopropal. Lube with synthetic gear oil, (my choice in gun oil for revolvers etc) no more issues
  3. The reason I bring it up is that it seems most everyone has found TG to perform as well or better in the place of VV320 at half the price. Sounds great... Is TG almost as clean as VV 320? I have heard TG has more, than most powders, velocity changes with temperature changes. An issue for an Canadian shooter.
  4. Could I get some advice on the following 3 questions... If a loads reads: 4.0g of a powder gives 950fps and max load of 5.0g gives 1060fps at 20000psi. So I work up to 5.0g and shoot a string of 10 rounds. I drop the highest and lowest #'s and average the other 8. Average speed is 990fps. The test barrel in the load data is 4.0" My barrel is 4.5" I am well stocked with 124g FMJ's so want to stay with them for a while. I can use up the 231 with my 45 ACP, no problems. I am happy to try another powder if I knew which way to go. 1) Do I assume my pressure is proportionally lower and with 5.0g of 231 could safely work up to say 1140fps? 2) Should I try a slower powder? 3) Should I try a more popular 9mm powder like TG or VV 320?
  5. Yes I was loading them to 1.09" It seemed the loads using 2312 gave about min PF using the max load of 4.8. The manual said the speed should be higher. Could sombody explain this??? What powder should I try next?
  6. I could use some help with 9mm minor loads and 231 powder and 124g FMJ bullets. I have a new CZ sp01 shadow. At 4.5 g 231 average speed is 939 FPS. At 4.8 g 231 average speed is 1027 FPS. 4.8g of 231 gave no signs of over pressure. But I am concerned this may too hot for my new gun as a practice round. Advice given is to try a slower powder. But VV 320 and titegroup are very popular and also faster, correct? So I am confused here re what powder to buy next for my practice rounds and IPSC minor. VV 3N37 or VV 350 are slower but, it seems not as popular for 9mm as the faster powders. Any advice welcome.
  7. Any body using VV 3N37 for 9mm minor loads?
  8. N320 sounds good then as I am new to loading for a new 625-2. 231 is dirty. Why no load data in my Lee and Lyman books? Any links to good load data for VV? How much more costly is 320? 10%?
  9. Why the low pressure limits on .45 acp compared to other calibers? I am asking cause I have bought a S+W 625-2, a STI ranger 2 and some starline +P brass. Yes I do plan on reloading within specs. Is it the old 1911's being weak? The old brass that is still reloaded may be weak? Or the 45 case itself?
  10. I am starting to load for 45 ACP and fun target shooting. I just bought a STI ranger and a S+W 25 - 2. I have win 231 powder and win large pistol primers. I just ordered some starline +P brass. Questions: 1) Is the 230 g LRN bullet the one to start with? 2) I can get in 450/.451/.452 size. Many smith guys use the .452 I understand. Is the .452 the one to start with? 3) Can you suggest one load that is a good start for both guns? 4) Just 1.5 lbs left of 231 I want a cleaner powder next. Any suggestions?
