Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I love the smell of gunsmoke in the morning My performance is ONLY relevant to myself. I cannot control who else shows up, what teammate threw a bad pass etc. I can control how much I dryfire, my thought process etc. It gets me out of the house with a relatively fixed timeline which is an important part of being a husband and father for my own sanity. As a CCW holder there are practical applications even if they aren't a direct cross when "gaming"
  2. I have read Brian's book twice. Once when I understood nothing and got very little out of it. Once when I understood some things and got quite a bit more. I'm probably due to read it again. I have and am actively using Refinement and Repetition from Steve Anderson. I will likely have "Get to Work" in the coming months as well. A lot of the stuff is so esoteric that even reading it may make sense but you have to believe it and feel it before it clicks. After using R&R for about a month, it was one podcast that really changed everything I thought about dryfire though. I didn't get it from the book although it may be in Get to Work. I was doing all my dryfire in match mode and not making much gain. One podcast changed my par times by ~25% two nights later and the speed gains are noticeable in live fire as well.
  3. I'd shoot the Beretta because I'm a cheap brass monger but like everyone else said, go as slow as necessary to be safe and make hits but otherwise just have fun!
  4. First, thank you! That describes me quite well and explains what I'm not doing. In order... I think I am/was turning my head in addition to my eyes. The turn and draw along with comments about head snap that I've read lead me to moving my head in addition to my eyes. That was the first problem. The second is even more spot on though. On my turn and draw, because my hips are automatically forced to be engaged, I index EXACTLY where my focus is. My turn and draw par time is at 1.4s right now during dry fire practice. Surrender and relaxed draw are within 2/10ths of my turn and draw. Yet my "transitions" are shit and this video perfectly illustrates why. I keep my isosceles and rotate most of my upper body but there is no engagement of my hips and knees at all. I tried some 90°+ transitions at 5 yards last night to force myself to engage my lower body. Still some bounce but lets call it A-zone bounce vs close C. I'm also REALLY driving the gun since it is practice. It surprisingly reminds me of golfing with getting the hips involved. It also forces me to keep my knees more bent. To be honest about the dry firing portions of his run, I didn't even realize that was an option at LAMR and especially afterwards. Walkthroughs, airgunning and visualization prior to stepping to the line was it as far as I knew. Sunday is the next match for me so plenty of time to spend getting transition body mechanics kind of grooved in for starters at least. I most certainly need to devote more of my practice time to transitions and movement. "Seeing faster" will be the next limiting factor I'm sure as even last night, changing focus to be able to call my shot takes almost as long as moving the gun. Thank you again!
  5. Relatively straightforward question I think. Quick background New USPSA shooter with 3 matches under my belt. Pacing to be placed in C class. Sig 229 (not optimal but works for now) Right handed Cross eye dominant but shoot both eyes open still with right eye. Dry firing with Steve Anderson's book 45min to an hour 5-6 nights a week. In transitions, I snap my eyes well ahead of the gun to the next target but it seems like when swinging the gun I almost always overshoot and have to bounce back. On a 10 yard target I would say I overshoot my swing to a close C rather than snapping to the center of an A-zone and stopping. Going faster makes it worse but not in a linear fashion at all. It happens even without a gun in my hand as I sit at my office desk and use a pen for transition/vision practice. Like my body doesn't want to decelerate as fast as it accelerates. Willing to listen to suggestions even if its just "practice harder"
  6. I got quoted a price of $729 with the Romeo 1 at the LGS but they're not available to them yet. It is on the store's wishlist and they will let me know when it comes in supposedly.
  7. Agreed. I've only shot there once (last weekend) but it was a nice shoot with 110ish people. Well organized and beautiful grounds.
  8. Semi necro post but has anyone heard if these are going elsewhere aside from Cabelas? The nearest Cabelas to me is only 90mi but its in NY state and I'm a PA resident. IE no bueno. The only Cabelas in PA is about 8hrs away.
  9. Crooked creek should be relatively close to you. Last sat/sun of the month. A bit east of Painesville.
  10. Reloading since junior high and I'm 33 now. Started casting last year too. 9mm load is an NOE 147 TC-ELCO over Titegroup but I'm working on a AA#7 load at the moment to get the smoke down. 223/ all pistol is loaded on a Hornady LnL Rifle other than blaster ammo is on an RCBS Rock Crusher.
  11. Hello everyone! Been lurking on and off for quite a while now. I shot my first two sanctioned USPSA matches in the last 2 weeks and like I was warned, found out just how bad I really am! I was using gear that certainly wasn't optimal but having fun which is what it's really about for me at least. I've already met a bunch of great new people and am figuring out my gameplan for the future still. As a married man with children, dryfire regularly and 2-3 matches a month is realistic until the weather changes anyways. I'm shooting a Sig 229 SCT in production, wearing my CCW belt, kydex mag holders, and a blackhawk holster. After the first shoot, I learned I had better have a plan because when the buzzer goes off, all hell breaks loose. After the second shoot I realized I'm primarily "index shooting" unless it is a longer shot. The one time I really remembered seeing my sights the entire stage, I shot 5 NS so I need to go check my accuracy slow fire again. This particular gun has always shot left for me but not like this. I've gone looking at CZ-SP01 now and also looking at the 320RX as a possible switch to carry optics. Anyways I ordered Steve Anderson's R&R to start sorting out a bit more and have been reading here steadily for 2 weeks now. First 2 matches are below. Easiest answer is I'm not shooting enough alphas AND I'm really slow. Crooked Creek felt like a mess compared to Eagle's Nest. https://practiscore.com/results/24666?q_individual=1090ba5e-caf0-47e6-b161-7ce7c373d3ad https://practiscore.com/results/24987?q_individual=b68c4687-e84d-4bee-a306-2f7d47a791f2
