Text here..

One of the problems I've seen in modern urban society is an utter lack of understanding regarding justifed use of force and escalating use of force. I've been in and around LE for so long it's second nature to me, so it shocks me when I hear strange stuff like your thinking, which could get you put in prison for say, 7 years for manslaughter becuase of being too lazy to learn the use of force laws and carry a 2oz canister of OC. If you shoot someone who smashes you in the face at a party, and he ends up being both dead and un-armed, you go away, effectively ending your life as you know it. You are a potential poster child for the anti-gun lobby. Get some training.

Modern Police OC Sprays (Fox Labs being the best, IMO) are wickedly incapacitating and work darn well against just about everyone. Best choice for most non-cops in the cone-style spray, vs the stream (due to the precision needed to use the stream vs cone). Don't risk your safety (or your significant others) by using a cheap hang-card OC spray. Fox Rox!

I carry both OC and a deadly weapon with me all the time. That gives me the tools needed for most violent encounters (I also have a Taser in the car, which in CA requires the same justification for use as OC, which isn't much!). My first choice in public is to hose them down with OC, then go to Taser or deadly force only if nessisary to get away (or effect an arrest, if that's my plan). If the bad guy goes for a club, knife of gun after being hit by OC, I can assure you his combative skills will be considerably reduced. I've hosed down probably 6 people in the last 20 years. It took the fight out of every last one of them, including two who had knives in their pockets but chose not to deploy them, for whatever reason (maybe it's becuase they couldn't see or breath and knew they'd get their asses kicked!). Half were drunk, the other half were on cocaine or meth (go figure).

That being said, I've also drawn down on three people committing violent felonies over that same period of time as a civilian ( 2 with clubs, 1 insinuating he had a gun in his waistband). By saying the right thing at the right time, while pointing a gun at them, I didn't need to shoot anybody to get them to end their attacks (but I would have!).

Remember, just becuase you carry a gun, doesn't mean you are a cop, either in training, skills, knowledge or presumed justification of the use of force. Might want to talk to some cops or shooting range vets you know to get the skinny on use of force laws in your State.
