Alan, if you're breaking links then you have a problem. the only time that you will break a link is if the barrel is stopping on the link as it unlocks. when your pistol is fired and the barrel recoils rearward it should stop when the bottom lug hits the cutout in the frame, if it stops against the link then the link will eventually fail. you may want to check the distance of your frame cut to see if the gunsmith cut it too far back. if you have a clark/para cut the distance from the back side of your slide stop to the front of the cut should be around .600" and if you have a nowlin/wilson cut it should measure around .500". sometimes you can correct this with a slightly longer link but this is not the best way because if the bottom lugs of the barrel have been cut to fit the link that is in your gun then by going to a longer link it will not only push the barrel up higher into the top lugs when the gun is in battery but while in battery the link will be standing on the slidestop when the lower lugs should be resting on the slidestop. the way to correct it properly is to weld up and recut the frame pocket and weld and recut the lower lugs of your barrel. send me a PM or call if you have any questions.
