115's usually feel kinda snappy.  147's feel like bunny farts.  If you want her to enjoy shooting, then I'd agree with @Nathanb and start with something heavier.

In my search for lighter defensive rounds I found

Sigs 115g V-crown JHP designed for micro pistols, 1050 fps

Hornady Critical Defense LIte 100g JHP at 1125 fps

So I was wondering if there was a reason they were using a lighter bullet, so I thought I would move forward with 115g bullets.  Plus I bought a lot of 115g bullets lol.

  2. I was planning to create a ladder of light 9mm loads using 115g bullets with CFE pistol to see how light I could make it and still have it cycle my wife's M&P shield reliably.  Then test it, then make several hundred for an upcoming trip to BLM land in Las Vegas for my wife to practice with.  This is her introduction to 9mm.

Alas my range trips have been rained out so I'll have to just pick one and make them.

    CCI Small Pistol Primer 115g
Hodgdon CFE Pistol Your avg measured velocity PF Avg
    4.5 839 96
    4.6 869 100
    4.7 899 103
    4.8 929 107
    4.9 959 110
    5 954 110
    5.1 976 112

    5.5 1095 126
    5.6 1115 128
    5.7 1180 136

The velocity measurements from 4.5-4.8 grains of power are extrapolated.  4.9-5.7 is what I've tested before with a 4 in barrel.  The Shield of course is a 3 in barrel.

Which load would you choose to make and why?

Again the theory is start her on the lightest load that will reliably cycle her M&P shield, get her practicing, and go up slowly on the powder load over time until it's close to the defensive round we choose to keep in it.

  3. May I ask the 150g HST federal literally says in the box that it's designed for micro carry pistols.  900 fps.  That's somewhat the opposite philosophy of the prior mentioned easier expansion of the 115g bullet.  Well perhaps I'll stop overthinking it.. thanks everyone lol

  4. I'd like to make a 147 grain load similar to defensive ammo.  When I look at all the Federal and Gold Dot defensive ammos, the power factor ranges from 139-147.  So I figured I'd make a reload with 147 grain ammo with a PF around 145-147 to train with, and then purposely buy 147 grain defensive ammo for the real deal.

My question is, Sig has a 9MM, 115GR, ELITE V-CROWN, 365 JHP which is a 115 grain JMP with a velocity of 1050 and a PF of 121.  I understand why Sig might want to make a defensive round with a lower felt recoil since the SIg P365 (my defensive handgun), is a very small light handgun, but how do I reconcile the idea that all the other 9mm defensive ammo has a PF of around 141-147 and this singular advertised defensive round for the Sig P365 has a PF of 121?

Is it possible that the velocity of 1050 is indeed measure in a 3.1 in barrel of the Sig P365 instead of the other defensive rounds which are typically measured in a 4in barrel?

  5. Is there any difference in the hardness between

Federal Gold Medal AR Centerfire Primer GM205MAR

    Federal Champion Centerfire Primer 205

I've had colleagues use Federal SRP for 9mm minor without any issue but technically I don't know which of the 2 above they have.

I have the Federal Gold Medal AR Centerfire Primer GM205MAR

  6. In loading 9mm 115 grain bullet with  Federal Premium Gold Medal Centerfire Primers- AR Small Rifle Match, I am having alot of no fires.

If I am worried about poor primer seating, once I attempt to fire it and the striker hits the primer, will it push the improperly seated primer inwards such that examining the primer afterwards will not confirm my suspicion?
