I keep meaning to send one of my XDs off to CC for the trigger treatment. My scores were better with a Beretta 96 compact than they are with the XD Tactical 40. The stock trigger needs some work desperately.

The model 39 had a reputation for extractor problems that were addressed with the release of the model 39-2.
Parts for them aren't too easy to come by. Other than that, they were very good 9mm autos for the time and I think you'll enjoy shooting it.

I had the same experience with an SV with a Bo-mar rear. The gun can definitely use a bit of softening. I broke the edges on the sight, hammer, and a couple of spots on the slide. I didn't need to do a radical de-horning, just enough to take the sharp edges off.

The issue with dryfiring a rimfire gun is this: the priming compound is spun into the actual rim of the case head, so the firing pin must be offset to ignite it.
With an empty chamber, the firing pin is striking the edge of the chamber. This will usually raise a burr sooner or later, which will make chambering rounds problematic. And it's possible to damage the firing pin as well.
