  1. I briefly shot a P18-clone in IDPA and used some very inexpensive Mitchell Pierce kydex mag holders. They were not an ideal solution but worked just well enough to not buy a replacement.

When you're looking, keep in mind that the caliber doesn't matter as the outside mag dimensions are the same for any of the para wide bodies.

  2. I just purchased a new PACT Mark 4 XP since I needed both a timer and a chrono. I bought the timer based on all the 'buy the PACT' advice in Mother of All Timers thread but now that I'm looking for a set of screens I see a lot of horror stories. Have the MKIV XP's improved any recently? If not, should I return this and get separate units?

If your MkIV XP has worked, which screens do you recommend? I'll be shooting at an outdoor range.

Mark 6 or Mark 6 IR

    Thanks.

  3. Back in early June I ordered some [edit] bullets [edit]. Did the online order form and supplied my CC just like always. A few days later I get an email saying the flavor of bullet I ordered is out of stock for 4 weeks. Six or seven weeks later I send another follow-up email to find that my bullets are still another several weeks away.

Now in late September I hear my bullets are ready to ship, only if I'm willing to pay the price hike. Thanks, but no thanks. The price hike wasn't that much $$ but the sheer principal of accepting an order you can't fill and then repeatedly missing the delivery date only to upcharge the customer at the end is unacceptable.

  4. Hello; I calculated my reloads for 9mm and they come out $3.89/50.

Since opening this thread, I've loaded about 3500 rounds on my new 550b. With 4.45gr Unique, WSPs, 125gr Precision Molys, I'm running $4.48/50 (89.61/k). That includes paying for 9mm brass, although with as much as I pick at matches I could probably up my 'reuse' rate considerably in that calculation. In the end, I probably don't save anything reloading, I just shoot more. But it's much better than factory prices plus I get a nice soft 125gr load that I like better than WWB.

  5. The Talons are nice and essentially custom. I like mine how I had it built:

For IDPA & Single stack, I don't see the $1000 disparity between it and my STI Trojan. Granted the fit is much tighter on the NHC, but for practical purposes, accuracy is close enough and both are reliable. If you want a game gun, I'd go along with the other posters and suggest buying an STI single stack and use the difference for a press if you don't already have one.

  6. I recently bought a Nighthawk Talon which appears to use the Cylinder & Slide slide release. It is shaped like a shelf rather than the checkered-wedge that is more often seen. I really like this style of slide-release but am having a hard time figuring out if/how one could be fitted to my STI Trojan 9mm.

The sizing between my STI and NHC release are pretty close, however, I see Midway & others listing .45 and 9mm specific slide stops. What differs? Pulling my NHC slide stop and comparing it to the stock STI, the mag engagement point seems to differ a little, and the diameter of the shaft feels a bit larger on the NHC/.45 one. I dropped the NHC stop into my STI and it holds the slide open but locks up the pistol very tightly. (Tight as in I worried for a second if I would be able to get it out of battery after the slide slammed home accidentally.)

Based on looks & description, I think NHC sources their slide-stops from C&S who also label it as a 45ACP slide release. I called NHC and they didn't have much information, however Tim said they do use this same stop in all of their pistols including their 9mm offerings:

    Any help or ideas appreciated.

  7. ...and still a part of the gene pool

As if using a vise, screw driver, and hammer to ignite.223 rounds weren't bright enough, this genius was doing it so he could 'profit' by turning loaded .223 ammo into brass scrap for $1.70 a pound.

  8. Anyone have a pointer to a comparison of this to hardchrome?

I want to refinish my STI Trojan and had planned on a hardchrome job by Tripp. If I understand it correctly, the hardchrome finish is a bit harder than this finish. Possibly a bit smoother out of the holster too?

How ugly would a hardchrome slide and PVD/IonBond frame look? The IonBond shop is just up the road and would save my $100 in overnight postage to ship a firearm to & from Texas.

  9. Thanks in large part to the advice here, and Brian's Dillon store, here's my new 550b on it's bench. The press is strong mounted to to 1" of MDF which is clamped to the bench. If I can stand the heat this summer of loading in the garage, I'll drill the bench and mount it permanently. The blue laundry bag makes a pretty decent press cover even with the options tacked on it.

I had some extra foam sheathing after the house was resided which I used to completly line the inside of the bench to quiet the tumbler. Works great to run it over night in the garage.

  10. What powder do you suggest for moly bullets? I've been using Unique and have no complaints yet. I was going to switch to Titegroup but have heard some comments that it smokes heavily with the moly master blaster bullets.

Master Blaster recommends VV 320 for a load but that is a fairly pricey powder. Any suggestions for powders around the $100/8lbs price point?

    Thanks.

  11. So a few firsts here. My first real IPSC match. My first attempt at video editing. And first time uploading content to the video web sites. I've been shooting local IDPA matches for almost 2 years, with a couple other 'IPSCish fun matches', NRA Action, and a 3gun match thrown in.

Saturday was my first real IPSC match, finished 6th out of 6 with 283pts in the single stack division. Todd Jarrett took 1st with 578 pts.

Looking for any advice beyond the obvious. Watching the video clips (thanks boo radley) I clearly need to do a few things much better:

    • Start practicing better reloads.
    • Break that IDPA habit of shooting to slide-lock
    • Don't shoot the far stuff on the move. Stop and get the hits.
    • Shoot the plan. (I knew to reload on stage 3 after the steel but didn't)
    • Slow down and get my hits on steel when prone; 3 misses required another reload while prone.

What else would you suggest? I'm open to bitter criticism, don't hold back.

  12. Two weeks *ahead* of schedule??

NHC quoted me 10 weeks and it arrived in about 8 weeks. The dealer placed my order Jan 26th and it arrived to their shop on 3/27. Took another week to get a check up to Gunslingers and it shipped to my local shop, Gunners Alley.

  13. Nighthawk Custom finished & delivered my new Talon two weeks ahead of schedule. :)

Only disappointment was that it arrived at my shop Tuesday and work then turned into a 16hr day which derailed all plans of picking it up that afternoon or shooting an IDPA match that evening. :( Hopefully I can slip out to the range tomorrow to try it out.
