    Howdy Folks

Philosophical question, and some accountability. What do you think the impact of COVID-19 be on the shooting sports. I am worried that the financial aspects of this epidemic will cause harm to all of us. However long term, will we see drastic improvement for most shooters as a result of the pandemic?

I am working from home for a week now, and I got a great work dry-fire balance going. Running dry-fire drills from Steve Anderson's books, in between meetings and other work tasks.

Anyone else dry firing while stuck at home? Do we want to get a dry-fire accountability thread started?

Congrats on increasing your dry fire practice. I too follow the Steve Anderson method. I haven't altered my practice schedule and don't plan to. I practice an 1 1/2 hours 5 days a week. I think most serious shooters will stick to their schedules. If matches are cancelled for a long time I bet most shooters will stop practicing until the matches resume.

  2. Our USPSA match tomorrow is skipping the shooters meeting and the awards gathering. You just show up in your first bay at 10AM. We get to shoot the match and see the results on Practicscore. So, we will be outdoors breathing fresh air on a 1/4 acre at a time with a few people for the day. Much less hazardous than the trip to the indoor grocery store. Meanwhile we have Governors banning things they know nothing about but keeping grocery stores open. Kind of like common sense gun control.

  3. I have been rotating three Romeo 1 optics on 2 different pistols for a year and a half of Carry Optics Division daily training and shooting matches. I never want to get caught with a dead battery during a stage so I change out the batteries haphazardly every few months. I have never ran a battery dead and I feel like I'm changing them too much.

How long has it taken you to run an Optic battery dead?

  4. I read the advice from CDC on mass gatherings https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/mass-gatherings-ready-for-covid-19.html

Notice it says "does not apply to the day to day operation of organizations such as schools, institutes of higher learning, or businesses." This is BS. Either it's necessary to stop large gatherings or it isn't. There's always a governmnt official with some advice.

Hey ... I didn't author the recommendation ... But I did read it.  It talks about mass gatherings, not grocery shopping.  Ya gotta eat to live and ya gotta buy food to eat.  It's disingenuous to imply we have to shoot matches to live, even if it seems that way at times.

You ever been in a Walmart? There's usually more than 50 people there. I don't think the virus is going to take time out because it was a necessary gathering of people.

And you know this how? Because older people will have higher mortality, with this or any infection?

The first Italian patient was a 38 yo marathon runner. He just got out of ICU last week. There is not a high chance he'll run another marathon again, or even run at all.

The first US published case is a 30some man with high triglycerides. He required  an experimental drug to turn around, an at the the time of publication was still hospitalized, day 10. The compassionate use supplies of that drug are running out, btw.

There are scores of young Chinese docs, including their whistleblower, in 20s and 30s, who are dead. I just read a pathology report yesterday, case series of Chinese kids; again, this was a pathology report. I've had patients with a non-COVID coronavirus ARDS, they didn't look too hot for months and months.

This will be a non-event for people who will have mild cases. For clinically relevant cases it will be pretty much an event, anything from financial implications of prolonged hospital stays, to residual lung function or neuro-cognitive etc losses associated with ICU and ventilation treatment, to deaths.  If the case volume explodes according to the worst possible prediction, there will be care delivery shortages and associated mistakes too, and that affects outcomes. There are a lot of young, very sick people with this crap in Europe and some series show 50% of patients without co-morbid conditions.  Younger age has been a predictor of better survival but nobody has said anything about rates of residual disability and loss of function.

As a general statement, it totally blows my mind that the clubs are continuing their matches when EVERY public health, medical and govt organization has asked to limit nonessential public gatherings and advocated for social distancing. I mean, hold off for a couple of weeks and see how things develop seems like an easy thing to do.

I see children give up their toys and candy with more ease than how adults, supposedly mature enough to own guns, deal with a request to postpone their weekly gratification event for the sake of public health.

  7. So...we cancel all events of 50 or more people for the next 8 weeks. Unless you are a prepper you will need groceries in the next couple weeks, so Walmart will be the nexus of the spread at that point. I watched an interview with government medical expert Michael Osterholm and he said that when the human interference times out the virus will resume passing through the entire population. We will all be exposed and will have to deal with it.

  8. I tried everything to stop flinching/anticipating but the thing that worked the best was learning to precisely call shots with my CO gun. Eventually I could see the dot dip then lift as the shot went off. Once I realized in real time that I was flinching it was much easier to stop. Also you can see were the shot went and often it's still in the A zone so I just roll on and keep calling shots.

  9. A bit of a side point on getting a red dot to work (for old eyes) and in adverse conditions, if money is an issue, and it is in my case. I have three Romeo 1s. One on each gun and a backup in case of a malfunction (and they do). My point is I'd rather not re outfit by dumping a $K plus into X3 of the latest damn thing.

So, the problem I run into is when the summer suns angle is shining on the targets or white painted steel and reflecting back into my lens and eyes. It washes out the dot to a large degree. The dot is very pale and blending into the background target. A new latest $400-$500 6 mil dot may help but I was wondering if there was a lower tech solution like blue blocker glasses to get more contrast. I've been training with a blue blockers on my home range in anticipation of the summer season but the sun isn't a problem with the targets angle at my home range. Don't know if it will work or not. Any body else tried this or know of another trick to get better contrast when the sun is intense on the target?

Yea i bought the regular x-five then the legion came out so i bought the grip , and now this 🙃. I'm happy with my TXG grip and silicone carbide, but i wonder if they will sell this metal grip alone.

I remember they were selling the Legion on the concept that it flexes as a polymer gun but is heavy like steel. The best of both worlds. (Subliminal message:  better than those outdated steel guns) Now metal is better. There is so much to learn in this sport.🤔

  11. I bought two 320 RXs a couple years ago to compete in CO. I'm really happy with them. I held off buying the X5 because I thought they'd improve it. I was going to buy the Legion last summer but I held off because I thought they might improve it. So... I think I'll hold off a while on this one because I bet they improve it in a year or so.
