Never said people would have to stop shooting revolver, please look back at all my post

I have already posted some responses to this type of question above but think of it like this:  If no one uses something do do you leave it in the corner collecting dust or toss it out? I am beginning to think revolver diehards are hoarders haha

Also in this, and many other threads, many revolver shooters  brag about beating bottom feeders, now they would have that opportunity for real, instead of having to compare results in the overalls.  And they would have the added advantage of shooting in a division that actually gets recognized.  I am simply trying to help clear the clutter and rip that bandaid off quick:-)

I would definitely shoot revo in USPSA carry optics if it was an option. Personally, I don't think USPSA should remove revo, but regardless of what happens to it, I really want them to open up CO to revo so there's a division where I can shoot a revolver with a dot and get destroyed marginally less than in open. 🤣

Sort of riffing on what Mcfoto and RJH have said - maybe it's time for USPSA to kill off revolver division and turn it over to ICORE? There may not really be enough people shooting revolver to have two different organizations doing it, and maybe turning over revolver to ICORE will consolidate all the competitors into one organization that can do a better job?

Although, it's not like Revolver division in USPSA takes very much to keep around. I guess just don't put on a nationals for it unless there's enough interest (which there isn't).

Living in the Seattle area, there are at least 2 USPSA matches (1 weekday evening and 1 weekend) every week in the summer within 1.5 hours of me (even in traffic). The nearest ICORE match is 3+ hours away, and runs 4 times per year. I'd love to shoot ICORE, especially to run an optic on my revo, but until some clubs in the area start doing it, it's just not feasible for me. And for whatever reason, it's very difficult (almost impossible) to convince any of the ranges around here to run new events because the calendars are already so full - for example, there's only 1 range in the whole of western WA that runs an NRL22 match (because of me), despite the fact that it only requires 100 yards and a few steel targets, it's super beginner friendly, and has as relatively low cost of entry.

In the end though, I'm not going to win any matches, so I don't care too much if I need to shoot revo in production for USPSA and drive to ICORE matches a few times a year when I can.

  3. Does anyone know of any gunsmiths in WA state experienced in working with revolvers? Specifically, I'm thinking of picking up a 929, but I'd prefer to have the action worked on locally, instead of shipping it off to tk customs or somewhere else. I'm also not super comfortable replacing the pinned front sight myself. I'm in the Seattle area, but I don't mind driving a bit to find someone good.

Cowboy action without playing Mr Dressup?

If there was an action shooting game that just required a brace of single action revolvers, no rifle or shotgun, and didn't require dressing up, I'd finally have an excuse to buy a match set of Ruger Vaqueros. All that extra stuff totally kills my interest in cowboy action...

According to PS there are 20 but no GM, and that is still less than %15 of the other locap division that this match recognizes.  Also the match is in California, where i have been led to believe that getting a hi cap gun is harder than other places, so the margins between revo and others should be closer (that is speculation, i have not been to california and am not versed in their gun laws).  If there was a match that should have a big revo turnout this would appear to be it, and with  revo  only drawing 20 people it shows how little the division means to USPSA.  And don't forget, I like revolvers

I think what I'm gathering from this thread is that it probably doesn't matter how much the USPSA org cares (or doesn't) about revolver - there's just not enough interest. And I get it - you don't have a lot of options for guns (929, 627 is pretty much it, right? Maybe the R8? 6 shot major isn't really viable anymore), it's pretty much necessary to reload, and it requires learning a whole new set of skills - especially if you don't already shoot a low-cap division. You just need to be the kind of person who really loves shooting wheel guns, despite their limited practical application (when compared to an autoloader). I'll probably do it anyway, and just compare myself to the other low cap divisions. But I certainly don't expect the same experience I had in CO where I slapped a dot on my g17 and started shooting at a "competent" level almost immediately (i.e. I'm still slow, but I don't have many mikes, and based on my classifiers so far it's looking like I'd be in B class by the middle of next year).

I just wish ICORE and Steel Challenge was more popular in the Seattle area...

That is scary, especially factory ammo. I have seen some of that in ammo I have ordered as reloads. Federal Syntec has not been that bad, I have been impressed.

In general I really like the Syntech, and I haven't had any other issues in 3k rounds or so. No failures of any kind out of my gen 4 glock 17 and 34, shoots super soft, and it's really clean.

I've done a lot of my own work on my revolvers and it's not that difficult using the right stones and watching the video.  Just take your time and leave the Dremel out of your hands.

I think that's good advice for most people...

Thanks for the info - I'm looking forward to doing some of my own gunsmithing.

You have the right mind set to be a revolver shooter. If you can master a 5 to 6 lb double action trigger and hit all A’s just think what that will do for you shooting a 1 to 2 lb single action. Revolver makes you watch your sights as it is not just a touch and go but a pull through until it breaks.

    Where are you located at?

I'm in the Seattle, WA area. There's ICORE matches down by Vancouver ~4 times a year I'll try to attend, but everything within an hour or so is USPSA or IDPA. I've heard that we have at least one good USPSA revo guy up here somewhere...

What surprises me most about the responses on this thread is how many people have such a negative response to the very idea of shooting revo - as if they're going to get some sort of disease from it  🤣

I shoot an open revolver in open division in USPSA and you may ask why and I say because I can. I also shoot open and limited in ICORE. Do I own autos and the answer is yes but I prefer to shoot revolvers.

I like to shoot and my choice of firearms is revolver. I not like others on here who belittle revolver and revolver shooters have realized that I do this for fun and sport and I am not a key board want to be Pro shooter. Yes they may be M or GM rank in their division but do they earn a living from the shooting sport. Without knowing them personally I would probably say not and if so I apologize. Pro and top shooters usually do not get on these forms to criticize others on their choice of firearm.

So if you want to shoot revolver and are not all tied up in the final standings on who beat who and how many showed up for each division let the cylinder turn, enjoy yourself and do what makes you happy.

If you do want to see how you stack up against other revolver shooters there is always USPSA Revolver Nationals and the IRC. Where wheel men show up with wheel guns to have the most fun with the most friendly shooters you will ever meet. ✌🏻

Yep, I’m a long way from being an M or GM class shooter anyway, and I don’t plan on winning any matches in the foreseeable future - might as well shoot a gun that I think is cool!

My 929 must have been the exception.  Other than blowing my cylinder apart with a double charge there was nothing wrong with the gun that I didn't expect.  All my S&Ws needed action jobs and the Michulek (SP) video helped me get the action I wanted along with replacing the hammer with an Apex.  My trigger pull was 5 lbs and accuracy was outstanding.  I did use .358 coated bullets with VV N320 to get a 132 power factor.

I also used it a lot for Steel Challenge Matches and put a C-More Railway on it and Hogue Big Butt grips

Did you do all the action work yourself? Did you find that it was difficult, or was it fairly simple following the video?

I'm looking at picking one up, but I don't have a local gunsmith I'd trust with a revo.

  11. I'm a relatively new USPSA competitor; started summer 2019 and shot a several matches in Prod and CO. I have a soft spot for wheel guns, so now that I'm comfortable with the rules of the game, I've been thinking about shooting some revolver in 2020. Doing some research, it's sadly become clear to me that revolver is essentially dying in USPSA, but the nearest ICORE and Steel Challenge matches are 3+ hours away and only happen a few times per year (compared to 2 USPSA matches a week in the summer within 1.5 hours). I'll probably shoot USPSA revo anyway, but that got me thinking - aside from the people that have zero interest in ever competing in action shooting with a revolver - what changes to the division would have you considering it? Allowing optics? Reverting the 8 shot minor rule that people think "killed" revolver? Do you prefer to shoot auto-loaders because that's what you carry and you want to be proficient with a similar platform?

  12. Hopefully this is the right subforum for this? Posting this as a reminder to folks shooting factory ammo to be diligent when loading magazines - even though you're not reloading, you might still get damaged rounds that could ruin your day.

Last November I found the round in the pictures attached  in a box of 9mm 150gr Federal Syntech - I imagine if I hadn't caught it, my match might have ended pretty quickly.

  13. I just shot my second USPSA match today. Shooting limited major, 40, out of a gen 3 glock 35 with the stock barrel. I'm new to all of this, and don't reload, so I picked up some 205gr Syntech between last match and today.

On the first stage, we noticed that my rounds were consistently keyholing on targets ~7 yards or more out. The gun was cycling fine though, no malfunctions. Has anyone else had keyhole issues with Syntech? I'm new to action shooting, but not firearms, and I've never seen decent factory ammo keyhole out of a reputable handgun before. Should I contact Federal about getting a new batch?
