But. it's also slow! Got to be able to come up on the dot & target simultaneously. Lots of dry fire!
Yeah, all the advice I’ve received on this forum has been helpful, e.g., removing the open sights, dry fire till the cows come home, target focus not dot focus, etc. Now all I need to do is reps then more reps.
Thanks!

I have found that if you can't find the dot (transitioning from a non-optic pistol), in addition to lots of dryfire, is it point the muzzle down a bit to find it.
Yes, muzzle down, that helps ...

This isn't the first time I've won this match, but last Thursday there were some particularly good shooters, shooting clean runs and I felt a little intimidated. I kept my head in the game, posted all clean runs and managed to take the win.
With 5 second penalties per miss it really helps me train my mental game, I only shoot as fast as I can call hits.

Congratulations, wish I could have been there.

Shoot the gun with the dot. Shoot whatever you love. It’ll be a lot of fun.
Go there with an attitude toward learning the game, and having fun finding your weaknesses. Do not show up expecting to finish anywhere above the lowest 1/3 of the match attendees; you won’t. Do not expect to excel... and without that goal it no longer matters which gun you bring.
That’s when guys either see how much better they can get and embrace self improvment, or they never come back.

Click the word “Quote” below the post you want to reply to, and start typing in the text box. Should be rather straightforward
The RMR is extremely popular in defensive use because it’s incredibly durable compared to most other dots. But it’s not as popular in gaming circles.
Ok, I’ll ask another question. I’ve got several other good handguns with open sights. I’ve always been a fairly decent shot with them. Should I use one of these (.45, .40, 9mm) instead of my G17C, 2nd gen., with the RMR for competitions? I have yet to enter my first since yesterday I got snagged in a police chase that shut down the 5 freeway near Camp Pendleton and couldn’t make it to a Steel Challenge.

Like this? LOL, thanks,

I just tried to reply to two posts from “helloOoOo” and “MemphisMechanic.” Not sure what I’m doing wrong cause my replies don’t follow the post I’m replying to. New to forum ...

Dry fire practice has improved my draw and fire time with the RMR to approx. 1.7 sec. I’m not sure what it should be at my age and experience but I’ve cut it down from 2.25. I’m going to keep practicing with it for now since I invested $$ on the RMR, milling, and suppressor ready sights. I’d like to see how I do once I get some competitions under my belt. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks. That’s the second remove the irons advice. Thinking it over ...

I’m turning 66 tomorrow. I’m just now thinking about competing in Super Senior. Got to keep up the skills. Tried to make it to Oceanside yesterday for first event but got snarled by the car chase on the 5 freeway and couldn’t make it. Better luck next time. I think I can shoot with the other geezers just finebut we’ll see. Jerry Mikulek is my geezer hero!

I have heard this suggestion a couple of times and it may be the answer. But I don’t want to lose the co-witness “just in case,” and I’m happy to report after two 30 minute sessions of dry firing practice I’m beginning to pick it up more quickly. I’m guessing but I think after a couple thousand presentations I’ll get it down. Thanks for the advice!

Getting used to the new Trijicon RMR installed on my G17C, 2nd gen. A bit frustrating. I’ve shot maybe 350 rds. so far and am struggling to pick up the red dot quickly. Need lots of dry firing I’m told. Check back in a month ...

Thanks so much for the response and advice!
Since I live in Southern California I suspect the matches are somewhat limited? Maybe not. Is there a calendar of events somewhere I could access and see what’s up in my neck of the woods? Heck, since I’m retired I’d enjoy traveling to something in border states like Arizona or Nevada.
Thanks again ...

Well I’ll SEE your corrupt city and state and raise you one ...
Los Angeles County, city of Los Angeles, and Kalifornika.
But believe it or not there are a lot of gun owners here in the once golden state. Add to that, there’s still some great places to shoot here on BLM land (Bureau of Land Management), great open spaces.
I’m looking to try my hand at some competitive shooting now that I’m retired and have the time to practice, etc.

I’m new to this forum. Pity us here in California where it’s difficult enough just to buy, own, and shoot guns let alone find places to shoot competitively. Yet that’s what I’m looking for, i.e., handgun shooting competitions within my skill range. Skill range? I really don’t know what it is yet. I’m a couple weeks short of 66 years old and have been shooting my whole life. My son is a police shooting instructor and says now that I’m retired I should try competing in some matches. Why? He says I shoot well enough to compete - purely his subjective opinion and possibly motivated by his inheritance, hahaha.
So, if anyone is of a mind I’d appreciate some advice for a beginner, especially if its something that could get me hooked up here in Southern California.
Thanks,
LJ

This is my first post since I just joined the forum so HELLO to all ...
I would like to try some competitive shooting. I’ve never entered a formal competition and hope someone can point me in the right direction. I’m a couple of weeks shy of 66 years old so are there age classes or divisions?
Am I too old?

Yes, way too old. Hang it up and write me a check for all your money. Address to follow ...
Just kidding! I’m 66 and just tried my first competition. I sucked. But I had a great time and met some good guys. Now I’m dry firing to get used to my Trijicon optic on my G17C and next time I’ll suck less, then next I’ll suck even lesser until I don’t suck anymore. At least I hope so.
