  1. I'm looking for a good club match to shoot on Sunday, September 10th that is somewhere along my route to Barry. I'll be driving north from Shreveport, LA. I usually take I-30 to Little Rock, I-40 to Memphis, then I-55 to St. Louis. But I could also head north through eastern Oklahoma or western Arkansas as far as Kansas City and then cut across Missouri to Quincy. Maybe something in northern Arkansas, northwest Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, western Tennesse, or just about anywhere in Missouri??? If you know of a decent club match anywhere in those areas please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Kay

  2. Another Babes With Bullets camp is scheduled for September 29-October 1 in South Carolina. My website is in the process of getting revamped so if you are interested in this camp drop me an email and I will get you all the info.

  3. Way to go Kay, Julie & Lisa! Is that a 1st? Lady in top 16?

Actually, Athena's counting is a little liberal. When you count the guys that had both a Limited and Open score (Phil, JJ, and somebody else beat me with both guns) I finished 23rd. If you count just the Open division scores I finished 17th overall. But that is the highest finish for a woman I can remember. Before that the highest finish was 19th. Athena and I have both had a 19th place.

  4. Thanks eveyone.

I was shooting for a 95 second match but got off to a rough (that means slow) start in the morning. It is so hard to stay aggressive when you are scared of missing! Even when I shot one-for-one my times were a quarter to a half second slower than my practice times. At lunch time Jerry gave me a pep talk and I was able to come back in the afternoon and truely shoot with no fear of missing. It was great! I still didn't consistently match my practice times but was only a few tenths of a second off on many runs. In the end I shot a 99.05 second match. That means I added about 5% to my practice scores. I'll take it!

Athena shot well too considering she didn't get her gun until the Tuesday before the match and half of her ammo didn't show up until the morning before the match. And even though we are competitors Athena cheered me on the whole match. Thanks for the support Athena.

I also have to mention the performances of a few other ladies. Lisa Munson won Limited division with her SVI. Julie Goloski won the IDPA Stock division shooting a S&W M&P. But I was really impressed with Julie's revolver shooting. That's right.....Julie shot the Steel Challenge with a S&W 627 revolver and did a great job!

A couple of other ladies that impressed me were Rebecca Jones and Randy Rogers. Both of these ladies were shooting the Challenge for the first time. Rebecca finished third in Open and Randy finished second in the IDPA Stock division. We will be seeing a lot more of both of these young ladies.

We also had a great time at the Ladies Steel Challenge Camp the weekend before the match. We'll do it again next year. Hope to see some new faces there!

  5. The Steel Challenge Camp is just around the corner. We have ten ladies signed up for the two day class. Planning on shooting 1000 rounds in two days. It's going to be a blast!

Athena Lee has been to my range for a couple of practice sessions. Unfortunately, Sunday the slide on her gun broke. Now she's frantically trying to get it fixed before she leaves for California on Friday.

I've practiced more for the Steel Challenge than I have in many years. I saw marked improvements for a couple of weeks and was shooting some of the fastest times I have ever shot. Then I started expecting something of myself and everything went to pot! The last couple of days I've managed to turn my brain off and just shoot. The result has been some pretty good scores. In fact yesterday I shot an 89.37 for eight stages. I won the match last year with an 89 and change and there were only seven stages.

Of course the Steel Challenge is a pressure cooker! The challenge is not the shooting, it's your mental control. I know I can consistently shoot a 90 to 95 second match in practice, but can I do it when the pressure is on? In past Steel Challenge matches I have not been able to do it. This year should be interesting. Wish me luck!

  6. Maybe I'll get to tell you about my own great match performance one of these days but today I have to brag on Athena again. We shot the Area 3 Championships this past weekend. Athena finished 9th overall, won A class, and had five top ten stage finishes.

Max M. really blew the curve by beating the 2nd place finisher by 100 points. After that things tightened up. If you throw Max out of the mix Athena shot 86% of the 2nd place finisher.

Congrats Athena. Enjoyed our weekend. The Steel Challenge is next!

  7. Great job Jane. Those head shots tell me your gun is recoiling straight up and down. Remember to concentrate on gripping hard with that off hand. This will help you get the gun back down out of recoil quicker. Keep pushing!

  8. I installed a Tactical Solutions 6" fluted upper on my Ruger 22/45 for my nine year old daugher to shoot the Challenge a couple of years ago. However, during the match my model 41 started having some problems so I finished the match with her gun. I haven't gone back to the 41 since.

In case you are not familiar with Tactical Solutions........they make a complete upper unit that will fit the Ruger MK II, MK III, or 22/45 frames. The whole upper is made of aluminum with the exception of the steel barrel (sleeved in the aluminum) and some small parts. I can't tell you an exact weight right now but on a 22/45 frame the complete gun is super light. Accuracy is good too. I tested it against a 5.5" Ruger bull barrel and a Clark Custom 6" bull barrel. It wasn't as accurate as the Clark Custom but it beat the factory barrel handily.

I still love my model 41 for the Sportsman's Team Challenge where the targets are on a rack all lined up nice and neat in close proximity. But for the Steel Challenge where you have lots of fast gun movement with targets in a wide array I really like the 22/45 lower with the TS upper.

  9. Sue will be attending the camp in Springfield, MA and Sarah will be coming to the Junior Camp at my home range. I love to see mother and daughter teams. Our sport presents a great way for parents and children to enjoy doing an activity together. I know my favorite matches are the ones where my kids also compete. We always have a great time even if we don't shoot well.

I look forward to meeting both of you soon.

  10. Well, once again the Area 6 match was a great match with challenging, but very shootable stages. This is the type of match I usually do well with. There were no real hoser stages. Even stages that had some very close targets like Fluffy's Saloon also had some fairly technical shots thrown in (like eight inch plates in front of a no-shoot).

I dropped more points than I would have liked (especially since I didn't make major) but overall I was satisfied with the way I shot the match. My goal was to give Athena a good run for her money this time and I did manage to do that. And just for the record, even if I had made major Athena would still have beat me by about eight points.

I've been shooting a Brazoes Custom with 4.5" slide since last year. The recoil on the short slide is definitely more violent than the 5" guns but the sight really returns fast and my target aquisition is faster. However, I think my trigger control is suffering because of the recoil and I am dropping more points than I did with a heavier gun. Not sure what the solution is yet but I will be working on it before the next major match. I talked to several of the GM's at Area 6 about different loads for the short guns and am going to be giving some of them a try.

It was good seeing all the BWB ladies at Area 6. I think Athena and I are going to Area 3. If any other BWB ladies will be there let me know and we can try and get together for dinner Saturday night.

    Good Shooting to All,

    Kay

  11. I get to start this topic since I know Athena Lee will not do it herself. I shot the Space City Challenge yesterday with Athena. She was on fire!!! I have not seen the match results yet but I bet Athena easily won the woman's division as well as placing high in the overall standings. She was leaving me in the dust (or in this case the mud) all day long. I thought about tripping her but I don't think I could have caught her.

Athena, it was a pleasure watching you shoot. It was a thing of beauty. You have once again inspired me to get off my butt and practice! I'll try not to make it as easy next time!

    With much respect,

    Kay

  12. Just wanted to let all of my campers know that I thoroughly enjoyed having you at my home. It was a pleasure working with all of you. Once again my BWB Camp guarantee has been met.........Everyone had a good time and everyone went away a better shooter. (Including me!)

A special thanks go to my fellow instructors/helpers, Julie Goloski, Lisa Munson, Judy Woolley, and the princess.....Deb Ferns. I get the camps started, but then these ladies pick up the ball and keep them running smoothly. Ladies, you're help, guidance, and friendship are much appreciated.

I am looking forward to the next camp at the S&W Academy in Springfield, MA. If you know any ladies that might be interested in attending this camp please put them in touch with me.

By the way.......I have gotten emails from two husbands of our Shreveport campers. They want to come to camp too and want to know if I will hold a camp for couples. What do you ladies think about a couples camp?

  13. We have a couple more Babes With Bullets camps scheduled for 2006.

One will be hosted by Smith & Wesson in Springfield, MA. Cost will be $400. This includes training, lodging and most meals. We'll be training and "camping out" at the Smith & Wesson Shooting Center. Date are June 1-3.

The other will be hosted by Thunder Ranch in Oregon. There are only ten spots available in this one so I am sure it will fill up fast. We are working with Heidi Smith to schedule more camps at Thunder Ranch in 2007. Cost will again be $400. This covers training, lodging and most meals. We have a dinner invitation from Clint and Heidi at least one night.

I am working on getting all of the details for both of these camps posted at www.bang-inc.com..

Please encourage any women you know to attend one of our camps. We would love to have them.

    Kay

  14. Welcome to the shooting community Carol. We'd love to have you at one of the Ladies Camps. You'll meet a whole pack of women that share your love of guns and shooting. And although I'm sure you can find some excellent instructors in South Carolina I promise you the Ladies Camps are the funnest place to learn practical pistol shooting.

  15. I have spent lots of time studying Julie so now it's my turn. Julie does not attack a stage, she flows through it. She is able to do this because she stays low and works off of her knees and hips. Her upper body remains relatively still. She knows exactly where and when she wants to engage every target on a stage. She arrives at every port or box with her gun up and ready to shoot. When I watch Julie shoot a stage that requires lots of movement she makes me think of a dancer. She has carefully choreographed the entire stage in detail. She then dances through the stage transitioning from one dance step to the next very smoothly and with no wasted movement. Again.........she flows. How did she learn to flow.......practice, practice, practice.

Jane, video tape yourself on a field course. Things to watch for: (1) Reaction to the timer. Are your hands moving the instant the beep sounds. If you don't have to stay in the start position to engage the first targets are your feet moving the instant the beep sounds or do you draw before your feet move? (2) Target engagement through a port. Is your gun up before you spot your target? Are you attacking so hard that you have to hesitate and regain control before you can fire your first shot? Are you getting too far into the port or too close to a wall? I want to get far enough into a port to see my targets and not a bit more. (3) Body position while shooting on the move. Are your knees bent and your butt low? Knees should act as shock absorbers to help minimize the gun bounce. How are your feet contacting the ground? The advancing foot should contact the ground heel first and then "roll" onto the toes as you step forward. (4) Stage choreography. Do you know the exact location of every target? Which targets are you going to shoot on the move? Which targets will you shoot standing still and do you know the exact location from which to engage these targets? Choreography the stage as if it were a dance and then concentrate on being smooth. SMOOTH IS FAST!

OK, this is getting pretty long winded. You're on the right track Jane. Keep asking questions and studying the top shooters. Never stop trying to learn something new. Try everything and then sort through the pile and see what works best for you.

Hope to see you at a major match this year.

    Kay

  16. Steven,

How old is your daughter? The USPSA Junior Camp may be the place for her. Jerry and I have taught the Junior camp at our range in Princeton, LA for the past eight years. We almost always have one of our past "graduates" come back and help us out too. You can check out the details of both the Junior Camp and the SureShotLadies Camps at www.bang-inc.com. If you daughter is interested get in touch with me.
