  1. I got to fire a few rounds with a stock 6" .357 revolver at the ram target on a metallic silhouette range.   200 meters/220 yards, and you had to hit the top few inches of the target to reliably knock it over (at least with the loads I was using).    I found it gratifying to hit maybe 1/3 of the shots.

Welcome. Are you anywhere near Old Bridge? I've considering making the trip down (from NY) to shoot steel there over the winter.

It's over an hour south of me.  I do get there occasionally; shot some IPSC there years ago, finally made it to one of their steel matches a few months ago.   Always a good experience, I just don't have enough time to get  there more often.

As for your transport question, you can find a lot on the New Jersey Gun Forums board.   Like here, most of that is searchable without the need to set up an account; lots of gun law discussion there.   For a long time, transport for handguns (or hollow points, which are largely treated the same way) had to be point to point between allowed destinations only...e.g. home to range, range to home, into the state to range, with no deviations or stops allowed.   Not for food, not for fuel, not to use the restroom.    That has been relaxed a little by executive order of the governor, but expect it to go back the way it was in January.

  3. Bullseye is great fun, and some of the skills are transferrable.   You'll certainly get over any fear of small, distant targets!

I believe that if you want to be at the top of your game, any game, you need to focus on that game only.   When I was shooting free and air pistol seriously, that was all I shot, because anything else formed nothing but bad habits.   I'm largely retired from that, and am  having a blast cross training for different events now and happily accepting the modest reduction in scores that comes from dabbling in many events.    I'm a better shot overall for it, just less of a specialist.

What I enjoy most about bullseye or the international events is that for nearly all of the time invested, you are on the line and shooting.   I love the action events, but all of the standing around waiting to actually shoot drives me nuts.

  4. I know the discussion here is about 929's, but it's worth remembering that the sight picture will also depend on the sight radius.   The exact same front and rear sight dimensions will look different as the barrel length changes.   It becomes a big factor in something like GSSF, where one might be shooting both a long slide and a subcompact in different events.  If you put the same sights on both guns, you probably won't be happy with one or the other.

You should. Around here we tend to support those companies that support our sport. Legality issues aside, it's just wrong to buy fake stuff that was obviously stolen from another company.

Last time I looked neither China or eBay have sponsored any matches lately.

Supporting companies that support the sport is always a good thing to do.

As for the legality, unless the knock-off company is copying one or more features that were patented (or, in some cases, trademarked) by the company that originated the gear, it's legal.    I've no idea if that is the case for the mag holders in question here, but often copies are legal, just because there is no protected intellectual property behind the original.

  6. I also like the Midway bags, and as noted above, they periodically get deeply discounted.  Keep an eye out for the sales.

I keep a couple of brightly-colored ribbons on mine, as I've noted it ends up with a number of identical bags on every stage and I didn't want it to accidentally walk off just before I'm called to the line (a particular concern at events where a squad doesn't stay together as they move from stage to stage).

  7. Does anyone still make reasonably-priced shooting glasses with glass lenses?  I may be old school, but I've got some Bushnell's, that I love, but I can't find anything comparable anymore...and I'm getting tired of moving the same pair from range bag to bullseye box to trap vest.   It's just a matter of time until I forget to do so...

  8. I've always avoided shooting with gloves on; too worried about the inevitable changes to the hand/grip interface.   I just compensate by keeping heavy gloves on every moment I'm not shooting, to keep my hands as warm as possible and ready for the brief exposure to cold.

  9. I'll try to avoid anything with a lot of salt or a lot of sugar on match or training days.   That's not a bad idea every day, but I pay more attention to it on match or training days, when I've noticed that lots of salt or sugar makes me a bit more hyper.

I avoided caffeine for years when I was competing in free and air pistol; now I'll avoid it for at least 6 hours before bullseye or other precision events (the half-life of caffeine in humans is about 4 hours).   For speed events, I don't find that caffeine makes a difference for me, though I rarely have more than 1, maybe 2, cups of coffee a day.

  10. I'm in Morris County, so north central NJ, about 25 miles south of the NY line.   Agreed, it's harder to have fun here.   I'm from Idaho, so you can imagine the culture shock...  But I belong to a couple of the local clubs and for the most part that lets me satisfy my powder-burning needs.

  11. Hi,

I've been using the forums as a source of great info for awhile now; figured it was time to actually sign up.

I've dabbled in a lot of shooting sports over the years; smallbore free rifle on a pretty good college team, followed by a dozen years heavily into international free and air pistol.   I retired from serious competition for a number of years after that (I was a bit burned out), but in the last few years I have been back dabbling in almost any competitive event I can find within an hour's drive of home; I shot a little IPSC, more GSSF, some bullseye, police revolver, pins, steel, trap, etc.  I'm enjoying the variety!
