  1. Thanks for the feedback about getting the GM from one of the smiths that can 'tune' it. Unfortantely both of the big name guys do not have one so it would be 12 weeks from STI and then another 4-8 from them. One told me August the other June, both much to late to use this summer. At that point I could have a full custom by Jan of 2007. What to do, what to do
  2. Well after a alot of looking I'm getting ready to buy a Grandmaster. I just can not wait the 6-12 months for a full custom that the major builders need. My first question is will I be sorry for buying a 'stock' race gun? The spec sheet says 38 super, I understand there is a difference between super and super comp casings, However, does it make a difference which one you have from a competitive standpoint. Should I be concerned about reliablity out of box, I'm a long way away from a smith if I need something tuned? Any thing else I should add to my concern list? Thanks for all the help.

    Glock Open Pistol

I'm looking for my first open pistol and have done a ton of research. It's obvious the 2011 style pistols are the most widely used. I personally see no need to follow the masses or shoot whatever so and so does. So the question is what are the pros/cons of the two (Glock/2011) platforms. I asked a similar question in the open section and got the expected '2011 only' response so I thought I would try it here.
  5. Guys, I appreciate the advice about the FL match. Not to be ungrateful, but given I live in Minnesota that may not be very practical. The feedback so far has been interesting, I was actually expecting more debate about the technical strenghts and weakness of the differnt platforms of 2011 vs CZ based.
  6. It's unfortante but I most likely will have to buy one before trying any. The group I shoot with has 3 open shooters, all shooting older heavily smithed guns. Nothing that you could even remotely compare to something you could purchase new. Not that these are not wonderful guns and these guys shoot them well but it's like saying I like my Colt Gold Cup so all 1911's shoot that good. The input is really appreciated: To sum it up so far CZ/EAA cons - limited access to smiths and parts Pros - price general - grip size 2011 - pros - parts and smith availablity, acceptance in US market Any thing I should add to my list?
  7. I'm considering getting into the open class and must admit the equipment options are a little over welling. I've been doing a ton of reseach but questions remain, I could really use some help. As I look at these guns they seem to fall in 3 general groups. 1. non-1911 such as an CZ or EAA, the plus is they seem to be very price competitive. 2. 2011 style from a specialized company such as STI, significantly more money, but still not custom. 3. Full custom 2011 form a smith such as Brazo, what can you say, a whole new form of art. Can someone please help me understand the pros/cons of these and provide some insight. Price is not my first concern, I'm willing to pay for what I get but I also don't want to through needless money at the need. You insight is greatly appreciated.
  8. I'm very new to the sport but would like to try to shoot open class. I've reloaded benchrest rifle and slow fire pistol ammo in the past and understand the time commitment it requires to do properly, and at this point just do not have the time to do it well. So if I can only shoot commercial ammo can it be competitive? If so what caliber would make be prefered? I currently shoot both .40 and .45 and have no predisposed bias to either. I'd also appreciate some input on the pros/cons of buying a complete gun from a vendor like STI verses a custom builder that uses componenets(many of which would be from the same source such as STI). Thanks for your help.
