Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I know there is a difference in the heights between rail and gas block mounted front flip ups. However, is there a standard in gas block mounted flip ups? Since all gas blocks are not a standard height what is the determining factor in obtaining workable sights? First, is my previous statement accurate? – railed gas block heights are not standardized. Example – MI (Michigan industries) new gas block flip up state they will work on a .925 height -- from center of bore to top of gas block. Is this a standard or even typical? DPMS’s Koelbl Single Rail Gas Block .750, I’m told, is .735 from bore center to mounting top of the gas block. So what would work with this? From my searches flip up front sight heights are not generally advertised to do a comparison. What experiences/knowledge can you share? I was originally looking at the MI front and rear set, but am I going to be limited to certain manufacturers? Appreciate the info.
  2. I have a glock sight installation tool which I will be using to install the Dawsons. This will also allow for adjustments - left & right. Although not as conveniently as the adj. sights. Although I don't know how much adj. is going to be required when I begin reloading and testing various loads/bullets. Is this an issue I should be considering? The KKM barrel is on my want list but it is at the bottom of the list and will probably only end up in my gun when I'm able to start reloading.
  3. I'm setting up my new 35 and the sights are the first order of business. I decided on the Dawson set but I'm undecided on their fixed or adj. models. The fixed front is even lower than the Heinie model, I was told by Dawson. Which I think I would prefer over the larger adj. front and potential holster issues. What is the consensus on fixed vs adj? Are adj. needed beyond the initial sighting in? With the various issues that can arise during sighting in - shooting low to left, etc - are adj. justified just for this initial purpose? Any one using the Dawson Fixed setup? Here is my list of 35 upgrades: Dawson sights. RS Trigger Kit JP magwell alu. Tungsten capt. guiderod 15lbs. spring Trugrip or Agrip THE mag release KKM barrel Mag ext. No particular order. Appreciate the feedback. Mark
  4. A JP adjustable gas block was one of the givens to be included on my new build. However it seems as though it is one of those things that is "nice" to have but not really used. From what I've read and been told it seems most are running the JP full open. How many are actually adjusting their JP gas block or running it full open?
  5. I defiantly intend on giving Benny a call. I was hoping to see some gun porn and hear about the specs from those that have gone before me. I think I know what I want but it is nice to compare my list with what people are really using. I've tried to do this by perusing the 3-gun forums. It has both helped and gave me pause as to some of my choices.
  6. I've shot IPSC at a military range in Germany for the past few years. Because of revolving participants and not too many shooters all classes shot together - production to open. You shot what ever you had. I shot the CZ primarily. I usually placed in the top 2 with my friend beating me with a stock SIG 226. It was run by an IPSC shooter but modified to meet the safety regulations of the military/German range. But now that I'm back in the states I want to participate in official matches.
  7. I've got a CZ 75b 9mm (which I've been shooting) and a Glock 22 (a safe queen). Both are stock. I plan on starting 3-gun comp. and my limited rifle will soon be ordered. So what should I do pistol wise to compliment my rifle. I was originally thinking of selling the Glock (I like the cz) and purchasing a P16.40 Para, which I could customize to my needs with time. Or take that $$ and customize the 22? Customize how? I also was considering a CZ 75 .40. Just because I like the way my cz 9mm handles. But I'm not sure this gets me anywhere. STI and the like are very nice but not in my immediate future. The bulk of my allocated funds are going towards my rifle. Suggestions?
  8. I did a search in the gallery and elsewhere but haven't found any pics of Benny Hill rifles. So lets see what you've got - along with specs please. The triangle shooting sports website is ... well... limited ... on their photo arrays and info. Lets here about the DPMS builds as well.
  9. Okay. Thanks for the info from everyone. I believe I know what direction I'm going to go, just waiting on a check in the mail so I can place an order I want to see everyones B. Hills and DPMS builds along with their specs, but this will be another topic.
  10. Okay, checked out Benny H., DPMS and Clark. The price is about right for the Benny H and DPMS. Something interesting - DPMS differentiates between the 223 and the 5.56 receiver. Offering their 1x8 barrel SS in the 223. They said this would be more accurate but would require more specific bullet weights (heavier) and types. Whereas the 223 receiver and 1x9 cromo barrel will be accurate with the lighter bullets but handle a wider range of bullets successfully = if I understood correctly. I understand the difference in the twist and bullet weight and the difference between the dimensions of the 223 and 5.56. But is there truely a difference significant enough to dictate what ammo you can safely/reliably shoot? Benny H and Clark say there is no difference. What are you shooting?
  11. kellyn, Like I said I'm not stuck on Fulton. I am aware of the upgrades and $$ needed to make it competitive. They make a good product, are local to me and that has its appeal. I'll give triangle shooting sports a call. Their web site offers little info. I'll probably do the same with DPMS. You mention POF as a choice. Gas piston? I've asked this question here before - gas piston as a competition gun? No gas block capability so isn't it at a disadvantage to the standard AR design which can utilize this feature? Does MTSN have a web site? scooterj, The clark gator is a nice looking gun and one I was originally eyeing but it is around $1400. It can be said that it is only a few hundred more, but with that logic the next best thing is always just a few dollars more. I need to keep true to my budget or I could easily follow pistolpetes lead and spend 3x more that what I needed to
  12. Okay, possibly a new route. If it seems I'm stuck on Fulton, I'm not. It just happens to be a starting point for me - one that falls within my budget. Fulton upper = $650 - probably less if I take it with out a few of the unwanted items such as the gas block/front sight and flash hider. Brownells shopping spree: Miculek comp JP SS gas block YHM flip up front sights Ace stock JP hammer & trigger Fulton lower Fulton lower parts kit = $553 Total = $1203 This is without the possible cost reduction to the upper. Plus a little DIY satisfaction. What I'm I forgetting? To ambitious?
  13. I'm looking at DPMS's web site and I must be missing it. Which of their current offerings have a flat top, 20" threaded barrel, full float tube?
  14. I'm finally ready to take the plunge and purchase an AR primarily for 3-gun limited/tactical. After looking at a lot of web sites and reading numerous forum topics on the issue I've concluded that I still don't know what to buy. However the Fulton Phantom seems to be the closest to what I want, literally - they are only about 70 miles from my door. Below is their description of the Phantom. It sells for $1050 + $50 for chromed barrel + $80 for flip up rear sight + 5% MD tax. Money is, as always, an issue. This is pushing the limit of my budget - I have to leave some for optics and a few other necessities. First of all is there another manufacturer that I should be considering? Second, if I go with Fulton which barrel is going to serve me best? I'm wavering between the 16" heavy contour cl and the 20" heavy contour cl. They also have the option of a Douglas 18" True Special Purpose Rifle (SPR), 1x8 Twist, Chrome-Moly, Threaded Muzzle barrel, but I'm not sure it’s worth the additional money. I want something that is going to be very versatile and won't limit me. What am I going to need to change or add? Appreciate every ones sagely advice. 15. I see the Tim Milkovich model - 16". Isn't 18" the minimum with 20" being preferable for most?
