  1. You might want to check out my Gunsmith's Facebook page, "OTTOCOMP'.  His name is Otto Matyska and can be reached at 314-638-3327. Discuss with him your vision and budget. You may be pleasantly surprised.

  2. I shoot a Limcat and live 15 minutes from Johnny's shop. When I need something done to my gun I just run it over to him and he takes care of it right then. He prefers that I don't tinker with it and then take it to him to fix what I screwed up.

I the same relationship with my gunsmith, Otto Matyska (Ottocomp). When I got my first open gun in 1987 he showed me how to take it apart, clean it and adjust the extractor. He told me that he knew I wasn't very mechanically inclined so if I broke something bring it in and it would be easier for him to fix it then instead of fixing what I screwed up. The hi-cap he built for me in 1993 is the gun I currently shoot. I replace the springs but the only things that have broken on the gun over the years have been a sear and the thumb safety and Otto replaced those promptly. At appx. 65k rounds I am on my second extractor.

    Yup I know my limitations.

  3. Awe, you guy's are making me blush! The reason I still compete is because of all the great people I have met in the 26 years I have been ivolved in this great sport. And Ron, your are correct... I don't take the misses or no shoots as hard as when I started!

At these larger matches I purposly don't squad with people I generally shoot with at local matches. It gives me the opportunity to meet new people.

Thanks everybody for your support and prayers sent to Gary's friend.

  4. I had a totally different experience with Aimpoint. A few years ago I sent them a Comp XD that I got with a well worn Open gun. the rear lens had some scratches on it and it suffered from the floppy on/off dot. Sent them the scope with a nice letter and a few weeks later got a repaired scope back no charge.

have an Aimpoint Comp ML on my work rifle. hopefully if it goes tits up they'll fix it no questions asked like my old scope.

My understanding is that they supported repair on the XD for 10 years after it was discontinued, after that no go. I would guess you got in under the wire.

Blaster, What size of dot is in the Comp XD and would you consider selling it?

  5. Oh, additionally, the AP models that have been awarded world wide military & Law enforcement contracts aren't the models you're commenting on.

There were AP Comp purchases by a handful of units & they experienced a Level3 like failure rate. The information & feedback from those units helped AP produce the hardened optics that later won the contracts you reference.

I've seen a fair bit of internet anti - AP rants from people in competition circles who rant about how crappy AP products are ad nausium. It's far & few between after you see the facts laid out to find that the products they're complaining about are either new (not worn out surplussed optics) or from the same product line the MIL/LEO units choose from.

Just curious, Have you ever shot the open division or owned an Aimpoint?

  6. I have thought about this post for a week now and hopefully this won't sound like a rant but here goes.

I have shot an Aimpoint starting with the 5000 on a single stack open gun and have NEVER shot a different brand sight in USPSA competition. Shooting the old Aimpoints is kind of my trademark locally. The pistol in my pic is a 1993 Caspian Hi Cap that started with a 5000 on it using a modified battery cap by Dick Heinie to hold an extra battery. Dot briteness was the biggest issue on these scopes. This scope lasted about 3 years and Aimpoint came out with the shorter Comp model. They had an upgrade program at the time and I upgraded to this scope in pretty blue and switched to a modified Red Buff scope mount. I bought a rescomp battery cap later in this scopes life and this scope lasted until early sometime in 2009 when the diode went out. I knew the extra battery would eventually kill the diode. Sent it back to Aimpoint and in about 2 months got the scope back with the unrepairable note. Called to discuss options and they were only interested in selling their new Micro $600.00 scope with only a 4moa dot. I was used to shooting a 10 moa dot. I expresed my concern about the dot size more than the cost and mounting issues. I was told B. J. Norris was doing great with the 4moa and I replie that B. J. had 22 year old eyes and I had 52 year old eyes......If they would have had a 7 or 10 moa dot I probably would have paid the 600.00 and got a new mount for the gun. I got lucky and on another forum found a pretty blue comp XD model in 10moa and gladly paid $225.00 for it. This dude was bright and looked brand new and the batteries seemed to last forever. I shot the 2010 nationals with this scope. In late 2011 I was having intermittent dot issues per a conversation with John sent the scope back. Got the scope back in 2 weeks unrepairable. I told John I would gladly pay to have this scope fixed.. No go. Aimpoint Micro the only option. I again got lucky and found a silver Comp C SM with a 7moa dot and paid?? You guessed it! $225.00. This scope is a little heavier a little heavier and not as clean as the other scopes but is working fine and the thing looks bullet proof... But my pretty blue XD is still in the box waiting for me to find a hero to fix it. If aimpoint called today and said send us $300.00 and we will fix the blue XD I would reply XD and check are in the mail!

IMO Aimpoint has their hands full with the Military Contract and really couldn't care less about the the sporting part. If they cared they would consider putting a larger dot in one of there current models.

It kills me to say this as like I said shooting the Aimpoint is my trademark and I would have gladly PAID to have these scopes repaired. I have never saw a C-More that I liked better, but, it the Comp C SM goes out and I can't find another one real quick.. There will be a C-More Serendipity on the gun..

  7. Have seen a older open gun for sale that I can get cheaply. It is a 38 super sti frame caspian top end 5" gun. The downsides I can see are the sight which is a aimpoint comp tube sight and no slide racker. Dont know history of gun due to where it is for sale but all the ususal places look are clean and no noticeable wear. only has one 126mm mag (another downside).....

Guess I forgot to make this a question....I have never shot open with a open gun ..got my classsifier with limited gun. Just looking for some opinions on whether this is worthwhile or not. I think that will addition of some mags could shoot this as is and gradually work it up to close to current standards.

Depending on which Aimpoint it is, I would like an opportunity to make an offer on it, if you are contemplating switching to a C-more.

  8. I was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma and had my left kidney and a 9 pound tumor removed in January 2007. I was told at that time that I could never be cured. I will start chemo cycle 92 tomorrow. I have had and continue to have all the issues you are experiencing. My biggest concern is the neuropathy and am very careful drawing the gun. I think the exercise program to help get your stamina back is a good idea. I'm 55 years old and have shot the open division since I joined the USPSA in 1987 and am nowhere near as competitive as I used to be. That didn't stop me from shooting the Area 5 match last weekend. I would never consider shooting 14 stages in one day anymore so I shot the match in 2 half days. I pick and choose the matches more carefully now and usually squad with guys that watch out for me. Running is tough as I feel my legs are in quicksand most of the time but I do the best I can. I will not compete the next 2 weekends under any conditions as I will have 2 chemo sessions during this time and would be too tired to enjoy the match.

After 26 years I do this for pleasure and if I get to the point where I feel that I am unsafe competing I will hang it up.

Chemo brain is a real issue and as the day goes on I tend to loose some focus on stage planning and just concentrate on getting my hits.

    Good luck on your journey.

  9. Just to clarify for everybody - the OP is talking about me.

I willfully admit and accept the fact that I used, and was informed that the use of, my superhuman speed, cat like agility, expert gun handling skills, and devastating good looks in an effort to deliberately advance myself at my latest match. While I will agree that all of these traits SHOULD put me in at least open, there are currently no rules against my having these abilities and utilizing them in whatever division I choose.

There were several times when I heard, "That out to be illegal", "Wow, did you see that?", and "That's not even fair!" I heard all of those comments both while I was shooting and again when the shooting was over.

I just can't turn it off, gentlemen and I won't apologize for the awesomeness portrayed after the beep. Like Lady Gaga, "I was born this way."

Thanks, and I hope there are no hard feelings.

I don't see anywhere in this post that anybody admitted to using equipment that was/ is illegal in the division he shot. If that was the case and he self reported later, collected his award and went to the prize table, all I see in this post is someone rubbing our noses in it.

I've drawn my own conclusions and everybody else can also.

I hope the conclusion you drew was that Latech is completely full of it and not the subject of this thread. Completely a different person we are talking about. He's just being (trying to be?) funny.

Not the conclusion I drew as he said he was the gentlemen mentiond in the OP's original post. Forgive me as I am old and have trouble understanding this posting thing when people don't post under their real names and take credit for doing things they don't do.

Kind of remindes me of the Doodie Forum...... I guess I was trolled!

  11. In the Kansas City area I would suggest you call Bob Hunter at 816-284-0545. I understand Bob is semi-retired now but if you contact him he might be able to help. If you want a longer drive you could call Otto Matyska at Ottocomp here in St. Louis. 314-638-3327. You will be hard pressed to find a better gunsmith anywhere on the planet.

    Good Luck!

  12. Kita, I've worn soccer shoes since I started competition shooting. Should be easy to find a female version. If you are ok with the big lug football cleats I would go with a conventional soccer shoe. If you find that the big cleats bother your feet on the hard ground I would suggest a 'turf type' soccer shoe, which I prefer. Not as good in the mud as the bigger lugs but seem to be a good compromise for me.

    Enjoy

  13. When I started shooting an "Open" gun there were no divisions, if you wanted to be competitive you shot a race gun.

Same with me. When I started in 1987 there was one division, open. Still shoot a hi-cap that was built for me in 1993. That was open gun number 4. 4 new guns in 6 years, that was how fast the open guns evolved back then.

  14. Otto Matyska shot the first Hi-Cap at a USPSA Nationals in 1988 or 1989 at PASA. I think it was 1989. It was a prototype gun in .38 Super and he cast the frame himself. The magazines came from Europe and held 19 rounds. The gun had a semi-profile compensator with multiple chambers and ports. The mag funnel was integrated into the frame and was huge. The gun also had a pivot trigger. The frame is at Otto's shop now with a few cracks in it. The gun had easily 100k through it at a 180 or better power factor as major was 175 at the time. I personally shot around 500 rounds out of the gun. The frame has a striking resembalance to a Caspian Hi Cap...... Which is the brand of Hi-Cap Otto built for me in 1993 and I continue to shoot.

Otto is still in business and is as busy as ever. I'm proud to call him a friend!
