  1. STI does have 10 rd mags, and Brazos is still selling some of the Gen1 http://www.1911store.com/sti2011magazine.aspx  But like you said, you'll need to add a basepad.

What I did back when the Safe act was taking effect, I posted a wtb ad here for the STI 10 rd 126mm mags. People had them, and at the time, had no real use for them. So I was getting them for about $30/ea. Then I added these Dawson basepads in the tallest height https://dawsonprecision.com/dawson-extended-baseplate-for-sti-2011-mags/, and changed the followers to Dawson followers https://dawsonprecision.com/033-001/. If you don't change the followers, you'll find it's very difficult to insert a full mag into the gun with the slide closed. The Dawson followers allow the rounds in mag to move down about half the diameter of a loaded round. The mag bases stick out just below the magwell, but suffiecient to facilitate easy loading. So, you end up with a mag that has the added length and give, to make reloads easy. And total cost was about $60-$80 each. It was a bit of work, but better than buying new mags at a cost of about $130 that are neutered mags

Great post, thanks so much for this. Definatley an option.

  2. I just ordered my first 2011 in 40, however, I live in one of those sad states where I have to shoot L10.

I'm just trying to figure out what all of my mag options actually are before I go forward.

MBX makes an 140mm L10 mag with basepad out the door which is what I'm probably going to do.

Does STI make a 10 round gen2 mag? If they are 126s, I suppose I could do a +0 basepad, but by then they would be the same price as the MBX mag.

Just trying to explore all my options first. Thanks guys.

  3. Another update from Josh at Double Alpha.  At least they are replying and being open about what is going on.

We are working on the 550  case feeder. We felt the design we had last year was not ready as it did not solve all issues we needed it to address and we felt did not offer a robust enough solution. So we continued to work on it. We prefer not to come to market with a product until I am convinced it’s as good as we can make it!

I think we are there now, and are shortly going to tooling. But that will be a three months process. So as it stands now, I expect it will be April or May at best.

    Appreciate the update

  4. So I picked up a STI Edge last month and it's started to rust in while in the safe. Has the quality gone down or did I just get a bad one?
Do you have a dehumidifer/desiccant inside your safe?

  5. I don't think the reliability of 9mm 1911's has much to do with the gun itself, but rather the combination of the magazines and your bullet choice. You just need to figure out what works best.

I had some nose dive issues with my Tripp mags and the flat point 147s I was using, switched to round nose 125s and never had any problem after that.

I cant remember the last time my gun malfunctioned without it being my fault.

  6. I have the CED magazine pouch, works for me.

As a side note, it says these hold 2 single stack mags per pouch, but this isn't really true. It's a very tight fit and if you have extended basepads it really won't fit.

That being said, I just use it one mag for pouch, but am still very happy with these.

  7. You can definitely reload in a small apartment. It's not optimal, but you can do it.

My 550 is bolted to a 2x10 and when I want to reload, I clamp it to a table.

I've loaded thousands and thousands of rounds this way and it works just fine. It's annoying to set everything up and tear it down but I just make it a point to do large batches at a time.

  8. I bought a sample pack of .400 blue bullets and .401 ACMEs. Both we’re acceptable accuracy for our game but .401 significantly more accurate. Minor price difference so I stuck with .401 ACME838157653b5971213168ee6afc7623bd.jpgd11b71de5627b878e754031038a4b01b.jpg
That's what bugs me about Blue. I love their bullets, but if you are only going to offer one size, I would think that the .401's would shoot better in the majority of guns given they are cast.

  9. How do I check the classifieds?

They are in the Miscellaneous section of this forum, but I think there is a forum post restriction before you are able to see all of that.

I've been researching this quite a bit myself over the last few months as I'm in the market for a limited gun and here are the conclusions I came to not counting the RIAs since I'm not considering those.

    Remaining stock of Edges: 2000

Bul Armory: 2100 with plastic grip

CK Limited Solution: 2100-2800 depending on picked options with plastic grip, 3300ish with metal grip

PT Honcho: 3000 base level gun with aluminum grip

I think these are all the major options before you start getting into 4k+ territory.

  10. I already have a Kimber 1911 that is my work carry gun. I love the trigger of the 1911. I like the weight of a heavy gun. I looked around and it’s hard to find a cheap 2011. I found the rock island but it only comes with one mag and I heard it’s hard to find extras that work. Any suggestions on a “cheap” 2011?
2011 and cheap aren't usually found in the same sentence.

The Rock Island / Para option is cheap and certainly there, but if you are on a budget you can get a much better gun if you are willing to go used. The classified section always has lots of previously loved 2011s that are perfectly good guns.

Dawson still has STI Edges in both 40 and 9 the last time I looked, I think that's just about the cheapest you are going to get without going the para route.

  11. .400 is not undersized, .401 is oversized. .356 is oversized too. Unless you specifically have problems with .400 or .355 (inaccuracy or low muzzle velocity) there is no reason to use oversized bullets.

I was always under the impression that when dealing with lead or cast bullets that generally these are oversized to seal against the barrel properly since it's a softer material.

Pretty much any other manufacturer of coated bullets uses .356 and .401 for 9mm and 40 respectively.

  12. I'm going to be starting to load 40 for the first time and plan on using Blue 180's as I've loaded tons of Blues for 9mm and love them.

With 9mm, they offer a special .356 profile which I have had to use as they are far more accurate in my barrel. Enough people have preferred the .356 obviously for them to offer that alternative profile.

With 40, they only have one profile in .400 which is undersized like all of their default bullets.

That being said, I haven't seen any complaints on the 40 forum about this at all in comparison with the 9mm forum.

Is this just not really an issue with 40? Sorry if this is dumb, I really don't know anything about this caliber yet and all the other cast bullet manufacturers typically size to .401

  13. I really like the idea of the Staccato XL. It looks good on paper and I'll give STI the benefit of the doubt and say that it's probably reasonably well built.

I just can't get by the price. This isn't a custom gun, and when it comes down to it, they are turning out lots of these in production fashion.

At 3k+ you are right in the range for some very nice semi-customs where production numbers are vastly lower and more care is taken during the build.

Even 2500 would have been a better price point for this gun, but hey, if all the Timmys scoop these up at 3300, more power to them.

  14. We both have the aggressive grip and it is very aggressive, made the Atlas feel smooth, he has the Cheely aggressive grip on the Chaos.

Is it like my hands are going to eventually bleed aggressive?

  15. I love my 1911 and CRUSH the SS division at my local match. There are two other people in it, but make no mistake, I always get at least 3rd :)

I remember this one match last year where we had 5 people. That was a tense moment.

  16. I can't comment on the CR speeds, but I have the Racers with the single stack inserts.

I couldn't be happier with them. Even though they are double stack mag carriers, the SS insert works perfectly and doesnt seem to be a compromise at all. Well built, very sturdy and I don't regret not buying the more expensive aluminum ones at all.

  17. Race shop pt honcho is under 3k with an aluminum grip, sight block barrel and would come with a ready to go 2lb trigger job. Can’t comment on the solution stock trigger but I know general consensus is factory ck guns have sub par stock triggers. pt is a much better deal imo
Delayed post, but yeah. For a few hundred more it's pretty hard to argue against this.

  18. Do you think that there is a "relation" between sti and svi?  Two different worlds IMO.
The only relation is that the S in SVI used to be the S in STI, but that was back in the 90s.

I dont think there is any comparable anything between the two. Some of the finest high dollar custom pistols in the world vs. production level competition guns that got the job done for the rest of us chumps :)

  19. I think this comes with the vision change of the company. Outside of competition circles, nobody knew who STI was. After their re-focus on the more tactical end of the spectrum and the crazy amount of press they generated by getting a spot in the John Wick movie, they are appealing to a much bigger and wider audience now.

That being said, because they don't seem to be very competition focused anymore, I'm not overly interested in their products given the price points.

That doesnt make me an STI hater or anything, I have a Trojan that I wouldn't trade for anything.

Companies just have to do what they have to do to survive and STI just needed a bigger market to do that.

  20. This is why I ended up switching away from the ICE magwell. I loved the magwell, but even with the dawson competition basepads, only the back corner of the basepad would stick out below the funnel so I found myself under inserting mags quite a bit.

I probably would have tried the ipsc version if I knew that worked at the time, but just switched back to S&A and haven't missed the ICE too much.

  21. Hopefully only about 3 more weeks until I can shoot my Honcho!  Looking forward to the ability to shoot the same pistol in both Limited and Open configurations.

Bringing this post back from the dead a little.

Did you get your Honcho? What do you think?
