I also own a XDM 3.8. Tool-wise, you can go low-end and get the tools you mentioned at Harbor Freight, or check out Powder River Precision http://powderriverprecision.com/and look at their tools and parts. I installed my PRP trigger with the aforementioned HF punches and had no issues.
