It's a real pain in the arse to do. Took me ages and a lot of swearing when I did mine.

    My local gunsmith suggested this:

"push the small spring into the bolt an then wiggle the extractor out of the bolt."

So he didn't mention needing to push the pin out(?).

I've put the noveske qd cups in a versamax, benelli and fn slp. It's good to go in all of them.  Obviously make sure you pick a spot that doesn't interfere with the operation of the shotgun I like my qd cups towards the rear of the hand guard but that's just me.

Can you please post a pic where you mounted the Noveske qd on your Benelli?

I've not had any problems with it. I ground the hump off then I got a wire wheel on the dremmel and went over it and took off all the factory black coating then polished the whole thing paying attention to the contact areas.

I also extended the slot in it a little bit to shave some weight off but I don't think it's really necessary.

I'll post a picture of it when I get home.

    Got your pics, thanks!

I tried to upload them, too, but this forum only allows file sizes of 1.95mb and smaller.

I'm going to go against everyone here and say it depends on the size of your thumb. Short has been an excellent way to go on mine, my thumbs do not get caught and the extra leverage I get from the shells loading higher in the port help me shove them in the tube easier.

That being said, the competition tactical does not seem worth it, it's still long enough to Chinese Finger Trap your thumb and it won't make shell loading any easier (if anything, the opposite)

However, from a physics standpoint the Competition Tactical lifter should be more reliable than the C-Rums. Notice the substantial depression at the end of the Remington lifter? That guides the shells into the chamber. Without it, the gun can not be as reliable. Notice how I wrote this now . . . your gun may be perceived reliable, but it can not be as reliable. I still think cutting down the prongs on the stock lifter is the best way to go. You preserve chamber guidance and it's short enough to not catch an average person's thumb.

I appreciate you sharing this viewpoint, as I was under the same impression. I have another thread going on Enos about the Competition carrier, and right now I'm between going factory, C-Rums, or  Competition carrier. Been reading and reading about these three and it seems that it's to each his own.

I have yet to be bit by the factory one in there now (with the Vacuum port by RCI X-Rail) and may  just run that for some time and take my chances. I suppose that's fine and dandy until I take a chunk out of my thumb!

The extractor cut is the area in the barrel that has been relieved so the extractor can grab the shell as it is in the chamber to extract it.  The edge is usually sharp.  The fork in the stock lifter helps guide the shell into the chamber.  When you use a lifter that has been welded, it is easier for the round to get caught on that sharp edge and not chamber as evidenced by one side of the shell being mangled.  If you chamfer that sharp edge, the shells feed into the chamber much easier.  So much easier, in my case, that I don't have a problem with feeding.

Such a thorough description, thank you. As a noob, I appreciate the patience of others in explaining these things!

The TTI M2 lifter does not work reliably in the VersaMax. I tried them, made some modifications, still no joy. There is really nothing feasible that you can do to make them run 100% reliably in the VM, just too short.

With the new Remington lifter, you should not have to throat the barrel since they have a feature that centers the shell during chambering. That is the issue with a welded carrier, and even more dramatic with the TTI lifter.

Which option is your carrier of choice then? The Competition one from Remington?

Once I got my extractor cut taken care of, I do not get ANY failure to feed with my C-Rums lifter.  My shotgun runs pretty much flawlessly.  (Probably shouldn't have said that out loud as I have my last big match of the year coming up....)

    What is an extractor cut?

  8. I’ve been reading everything possible on the forum and would like to know a little more on which caddies have best retention.

While the caddies dies in use now are fast and quite popular, I’m deoppomg shells more than preferable.

So between Invictus and Taccom and Carbon Arms, which hold shells best?

I have the C-Rums on my versamax.  As long the sharp edge has been taken off the extractor cut, I wouldn't think you would have any feed problems.  Mine feeds great.

Not sure why mine hasn’t been sent out to CRums yet. Perhaps just concerned over feeding issues.

Any fails with a CRums one to speak of?

I have a Versamax Tactical with monotube, worked over by RCI X-Rail. Their take on the carrier is that you can run the factor one, as that will feed best. I have yet to be bitten, but others that have shot my gun left a trail from their bleeding thumb.

I've also run Taran Tactical Benelli M2 carrier in a previous Versamax I've owned. That one was rather short, and had some feeding issues that (I now know) may have been fixed with the RCI dogleg spring and Wolff +25% extra power recoil spring.

Just curious what you've tried and are are currently running and why.

I will predict he's using the flush with the end of the barrel IC choke that comes from the factory installed on the 1301 Comp.

I used that for my first shoot with this gun, yes. There were mostly clays out to 15 yards or so, and some poppers to knock down at about 18 yards, maybe.

I ended up ordering Carlson's chokes in Cylnder, Light Mod, and Improved Mod. Range time and patterning will tell how those work out. I've never patterned before, as I'm a bit of noob and have little access to a club right now near Madison, WI.

    BOOM!

But I see way more people miss being over choked than under. When you see a guy entirely miss a 4" target with a 4" pattern centered 2" to the right, and then hear them talking about the need to aim harder with a shotgun, you know they're doing it wrong.

@FortesinFide, I see you're in Cross Plains. Did you ever make it to a Winnequah match this year? If you look at the guys in top 10 all this year I squadded with every one of them at some point and cylinder was easily the preferred choke, the pipes are the only thing that really changes that.

YES, a couple guys and I were there at the last shoot of the season. We were hoping that Rueben would have that Halloween / Zombie shoot, but maybe next year.

Cylinder, LM and IM would be my preference if I could only have three.

Youd go Cylinder over Improved Cylinder...

have you you ever tried the Pure Gold Spreader and/or Briley Diffuser?

  14. I'm looking at getting some Carlson's Chokes for my Versamax, and I'm just curious about going with Improved Mod over Mod. I have not patterned anything, and typically shoot 7.5 Wal Mart Winchesters or Federals.

    What might be your preference?

Improved Cylinder + Light Mod + Mod

    or

Improved Cylinder + Light Mod + Improved Mod

The SSXL clips are 3/8th inch taller than the original SSLs. Helps people with larger hands get a better grab for Quads.

    Hi Mark,

I see you have the SSL Chest Rig on special right now for $170. Any chance those can be rigged with SSXL clips every other row?

    Thanks!

I have run Pure Gold chokes for 3 years now and shoot slugs through light mod and mod regularly in matches.  I have noted no untoward effects or change in POI.  It seems like most of the time it is IC or spreader with slugs and the spreader shoots them great also.

I have patterned the Pure Gold chokes next to Carlson and the Pure Golds are tighter as a rule.

Just talked with Jeff at Pure Gold and like you, he also said there's no issues putting slugs through Light Mod. This is contrary to their insert:

  17. Just received a Pure Gold Competition choke in Light Mod. On the package it says not to be shooting slugs through it(?).

I've been using Carlson's extended choke tubes and have had no issues with slugs through it, though I must say I didn't "read the label" when I first got those!

    Any advice here, please?

I know it has been a while on this thread, but I thought I would throw in my $.02. I would never doubt anyones factual information here on the subject, but I know when I shot for the Air Force International Skeet Team, Briley helped us out when it came to gear. I shot a diffusion not only for International Skeet (which is faster and starting in the "ready" position) but also for sporting clays. Now I was shooting 24gram loads (7/8 oz) with number 8.5 shot, Federal Gold Medal Intl loads and could hit birds at 40+ regularly. I know some are thinking about the golden bb law, but they weren't just chipping. We were told, and never saw evidence to not believe it, that when the shot spun, the "outside" of the pattern spread fast, but there were a large concentration of pellets that remained in the center of the pattern (until momentum was lost)

I am going to get one for my new Benelli from Benny and will have no reservations about shooting poppers or clays out to 20. I will test this theory in October when I get back and report what happens out of a 21" with 3 dram 7 1/2's. I thing it might be my choke for at least 75% of the time to include slugs.

    Mike
