I was not super impressed by my RIA 1911A2 double stack when I bought one a number of years ago. Magwell machining was terrible (visibly so), tolerances were very loose, etc. Hopefully they have improved on these problems.

I am surprised we haven't seen anyone come out with a 2011-style (grip != frame) double-stack at the thousand dollar price point yet. The patents are all expired, you can use cheaper polymer grips, the frame can be easily-machined aluminum, etc. BUL was running fairly close for a while with the SAS II guns, but has jacked their prices up substantially over the past couple years, and the SPS Pantera isn't quite that low, either. You would have figured the Turks or Filipinos would have done it by now.

I reached out to Tisas in their forum on AR15.com, and I was told it's something they're thinking about.

  2. Looking for a little advice here.  Years ago, I was into 1911s pretty hard but eventually sold them off (to include a Nighthawk and Miller Custom), and I've decided that I just really miss the handling/trigger etc of a good 1911.  I thought an "updated" 2011 hi-cap design in 9mm would be cool.  Now, this would just be a fun range gun (no comps), so I don't really want to spend Stacatto/comp-gun money.  I was looking at the RIA MS HC Tac combo.  From what I understand, is that it's the reiteration of Para-Ordnance.  I'm old enough to remember PO guns from years ago, which honestly makes me a little leery of the RIA.   What would y'all recommend for something preferably below $1k?

  3. Is the Tubb flatwire spring really worth it for a precision .308 build?  I figure if I run a SLR Sentry 7, would a standard A2 receiver extension/.308 rifle buffer and spring be good to go?  I'm using a Luth MBA-1 stock.

  4. I would also suggest a .260 rem or 6.5 creed. As far as rifle, I fear that George has ruined you for life.

:roflol: .......... :( . It's true. Anyway as to usage, it will mainly be a fun/range gun. Nothing formal. Also, I'm sticking with .308 as I don't reload. When I had .308 bolt guns before I shot the Black Hills 175 gr load best.

The biggest thing that keeps me away from the AAC-SD is that

    1. it's a Remington, and they've been having spotty QC the past couple years.
    2. Since the other two I'm looking at (Tikka and FN) have DBM, I'd like this on to as well
    3. That stock

So by the time I get the AAC-SD ($700-ish) and then upgrade the stock (MIN $300), add DBM ($300-ish), rail ($100-ish), I'm already at $1400 conservatively.

    Any other thoughts?

I'm wondering if a Tikka CTR in a chassis would shoot as well (or better) than the FN?

  5. Okie dokie,

So I've posted these questions over at SH, ARfcom, and MD shooters so if you've seen it there, feel free to move on. I thought I'd also post here for some different perspective. A little background; years ago I owned several Remington 700 PSS's...then I upgraded to a GAP rifle (cue the sound of the sunlight beaming through the clouds with angelic singing). Then, life happened...wife, house, kids...and the GAP had to go.

So, fast forward and I'm ready to get a .308 bolt gun again....except NOT on a bachelor's budget. I'm not looking to compete (yet), and I only have access (for now)to a 200 yard range. So here are my considerations....

Remington 700 5R. IMO the best for the $ because if I went with an AAC model, I'd have to upgrade the stock too. With the 5R, I'd "only" have to change the trigger and bottom metal. $1100-$1200. Not including cost of scope base.

Tikka CTR. I've heard nothing but great things about them. The stock is do-able, but I'd also consider selling the stock and bottom metal (same as TRG22) and putting it in a KRG X-ray. From what I've read, fantastic smooth actions, nice triggers. $1200-ish after X-ray.

FN SPR A1. Same as Tikka, never heard a bad thing about them. Can get an A1 (although I REALLY want an A1A...$1600-$1700) for $1295. Already in bedded McMillan stock, with DBM (although it's FN proprietary). Comes with 20 MOA base (8-40). Not as smooth as Tikka, but good trigger too.

    Thoughts?

  6. Now that I have my scope on the way (Bushy Tac Elite 3-12) I need a mount. Now, I really don't have a need for QD (although if a QD mount is the best deal in terms of rigidity, etc then so be it). I don't want to spend a ton (so NF/Spuhr/Bobro are out), but I want something good. On the higher end, I'm was looking at JP and ADM. On the lower end of the price spectrum, I was looking at the Leupold Mk2 IMS, Aero precision (looks awfully thin though), Warne RAMP, and Burris PEPR.

Are there any advantages to the JP/ADM over the "lower end" ones? I also want to make sure whichever I end up with, doesn't mar the scope, etc.

    Recommendations?

    Thanks

  7. Ok,
So I need an affordable scope for my SPR-ish/3-gun build (18" WOA barrel). I currently only have access to a 200 yard range. This will be primarily for casual target shooting with the possibility of shooting 3-gun (if I ever get the time, etc.). I'm limited to Amazon as I have a $200 gift card there. So, I figure add another $200 and I can get something pretty nice (yes I know "pretty nice" is all relative). I do want a 30mm tube though. So, I'm thinking.....

    Burris 4.5-14 MTAC

    Burris 1-4 MTAC
    Vortex Viper PST 1-4
    Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16
    Vortex HS 2.5-10x44

Weaver Super Slam 1.5-6 with illuminated Ger#4 ret

    Other recommendations?

  8. Ok, so one of the barrels I'm looking at is an ARP. They come with a 5/8x24 thread pitch. Are there any "tactical" type brakes that are in that thread pitch but made for 5.56? The only one I know of is the Hammerhead and it seems a little too big for me.

Since most brakes in 5/8x24 are meant for AR10 type variants, will the performance of a brake be noticibly less if I use a brake designed for 7.62 on a 5.56?
