  1. I still haven't seen the Shooting Gallery episode yet. I wasn't going to be home for the Shooting USA episode and wrote Jim Scouten, he sent me a dvd of that episode! My son Alden ended up being interviewed on both shows... Quite interesting when the big guys holding video cameras were chasing him through 2 of his stages :-) . I even managed to get my mug on screen for a few seconds, and they filmed a bit of me screwing the pooch on the Hummer stage.

  2. where I put 750 rounds of my old 4.1 grains of TG under 158 grain Zero swaged RNLs through my M67 - I think I brushed out the cylinder three or four times the entire day, and had NO problems.

    TIA!

Just a thought about TG powder... I have been helping one of hte local ICORE shooters here with some loading issues. When time for a reload in a stage the bullets weren't dropping into the charge hole well at all. The gun's chargeholes had been re-re-chamfered, polished, and they would be blindingly clean before the stage. 1 or 2 reloads into the stage and the bullets wouldn't go without force. The gun was running 3.8 gr TG under a 158 rn bearcreek moly bullet. We ended up finding unburnt powder in the charge holes that were being left there during a reload. The thought was that there was powder unburnt left in the case that was dislodged during the reload, and it wasn't letting the loaded bullets in the moonclip slide past into place. A change in powder to either Bullseye or TrailBoss fixed the problem immediately in this situation. Trailboss seemed to be the cleaner of the two though.

  3. At 10, I started my son off shooting steel matches with a Sig Trailside .22. By 11 he was shooting a 686 7 shot in 38 special and a XD-9 4". Here in the last 2 months he's decided that he wanted to run withthe big dogs and he started shooting my 1911 45 acp and a kimber conversion .22 when he needs a rimfire gun.

What worked for me was letting him go at his own pace, provide guidence when needed, and allow other adult shooters to warp his mind... I mean gently move him along his learning curve. I was lucky in that I had some great shooters here locally, in both revolver and autos (flatguns). Plus he was interested enough that we both went through the course to become USPSA RO's. He and I both shoot every venue here except for IDPA and cowboy, I can't afford to gear up for another venue quite yet :-)

Every junior shooter learns at his or her own pace though, and I tried not to play little league dad too much and give him space to try everything and figure out what he had the most fun at.

I hope this helps you a bit.

  4. Sorry everyone didnt mean to stir the pot.

Your post looks different to different people, depending on their point of view. I was hoping to gain some insight from the answers to your question as well. I am in Ca. and have started looking for a double stack full size gun for myself to use shooting steel. The only one (that I have found) of that style (S_I Looking) that is legal to purchase NEW in this state is the BarSto. That being said though, a person CAN buy any used gun in the state (as long as it isn't full auto, have hicap mags with it, and not an ASSault weapon) through a private party transfer. Once the gun, and a new waiting to be built frame counts as a gun, is already legally here and registered within the state you are fine to buy it from a private party.

The question that started this is one that I have been askng locally to see if I wanted to wait until a frame of the aforementioned types came up for sale.... or buy Barsto.

    Just my $.02...

  5. My thanks to Tom and Juan for putting on the event. For those who haven't tried it yet, if you are close enough to get here to shoot it.... DO IT! I shot open auto pistol and open auto rifle classes and my son shot in auto limited. We didn't light the world on fire but had a great time.

There were 5 stages of steel, the premise being that you shoot each stage 3 strings, string times are added together for your stage time. Pistols shoot at arrays w/ 5 steel plates, and rifles have 6 plates. It is a lot like Steel Challenge in that you have an audible beep to start you and time stops when you hit the stop plate. 2 of the stages today had stop plates for the rifles out at 60+ yards, the others closer.

They have even made classes for the manualy operated guns: Revos, pumps, lever action, bolt action, and a cowboy class as well.

There is a huge fun factor here with the .22s, the ammo is cheap and there seems to be a class for any type .22 firearm out there. There is the guys using the higher dollar race guns, but also a bunch using bolt action inexpensive plinkers. This time there were only 2 juniors there but it seems llike a perfect venue for beginers to cut their teeth on competition.

Thanks again guys, we'll be back!

  6. can you say better living through chemistry?

I always thought RW was a rip off of Johnathon Winters (his "child" in the series").

IIRC, RW thinks JW is an absolute god of comedy. Any rips or riffs on JW's style are probably in homage.

I remember seeing the two of them doing a showtime or HBO hour long thing, more than a few years ago. I remember that as one the longest times spent laughing in my entire life. Both of them going 90 mph, playing off of each others lines and flubs. I had never seen two comics play that well together, usually there is a straight man and comic.... with these two it was both just going with it 100%.

That clip of Mork, was an awesome flash back!

  7. I recently spent some time up at the Apex shop and saw the following:

Randy manacled to his work benches... with enough chain to go between his benches, mills, lathes, and just barely reach the phone (but just to order more parts). I think the computer has been slid just inches out of reach :-)

The guy has been swamped with gun work lately (since March or so) and has been holding or helping several classes this year. I know in the past 2 months he's done 4 classes, ( law enforcement, intro to action pistol, shotgun, revo 101) so keeping up with his dremel magic is taking most of his left over time time. If you want a sad story, ask him when his last day off was ....

His loyal customers just take turns driving by and sliding in his daily ration of rice and red bull, priorities right?? :-)

  8. The gun is fitted with a 329 titanium cylinder cut for moon clips. I used essentially cowboy reloads in .44 Special...206-gr flat point lead bullets over Trail Boss powder at something like 150 power factor, graciously loaded for me by Dave Wilson. THE GUN WAS LIKE RUNNING A STAPLER! I wasn't flying, but I had only one "B" hit out of the two stages.

The ammo was 133 power factor, 5.6 gr. Trail Boss powder, 205 gr rnfp Bear Creek moly bullets. I'm glad they worked out for you!

  9. We have far and near to fit in some time in the afternoon tomorrow..... sort of not looking forward to it (sort of a LOT!) I didn't get a chance to watch Jerry shoot any stages, maybe tomorrow though. I did happen to walk by when Rob L was shooting a stage I had started on. I stopped and watched and said " so THATS how you are suposed to do it...."

Alden was interviewed for Shooting Usa though, the kid was stoked! I think he only had 1 mike so far, I'm keeping fingers crossed for him tomorrow. I spent a while after getting home loading extra ammo for a few of those who didn't end up having enough ammo that would go boom n their guns. Nice living 45 minutes from the Hogue range :-)

I broke my chrono last week and was sweating the chrono stage here... 133 pf. One less thing to worry about now. 6 more stages to go starting @ 07:30, then standards. That should give me time to get ready and get the nervous worked out by then.

    More tomorrow

    Dave Wilson

  10. Thanks for all the kind words for the kid. He thinks it's pretty cool to be the youngest (so far) and better to have beat his dads score on the RO test. Alden has run shooters at steel matches and some ICORE static stages in the past at club matches. It's great seeing him gain confidence in himself as an RO as he does it more often. At the monthly indoor match that I put on he also RO's there with some of the more seasoned shooters. I haven't heard from anyone yet that had a problem with the way he has ran them.

I have noticed that there are usually 2 different views on Alden shooting and ROing. There are those that are very suportive and glad that he is there , as juniors in any sport are that sports future. There are also those that have had bad experiences with juniors and automaticly believe that a meltdown will happen with him, just give him time. So far the latter have been proven wrong at every turn. I somehow ended up with a great kid that hasn't totaly lost his cool in the face of adversity yet, manages to keep having fun pulling trigger, and listens. I will continue to make sure he has the oportunity to RO when we can, and get him around those with a lot of experience to share and learn from.

  11. My son Alden got his RO card, and patch, in the mail last week. He just turned 12 and ended up with a 94% on his test. The main reason he wanted to go through the course was to learn more, and he got that in spades. We knew going in that he wouldn't be running his own squad any time soon. The bad part is that with my days off, it will be a while before I will be off to shoot USPSA at our club.

He had a question for me.... How old is the youngest USPSA RO? Anybody??

    Dave Wilson

  12. I had been thinking about doing something very close to the first PS pic above with my sons 686+, the main reason I decided against it was the upcoming rule change in ICORE re: stock configuration barrels. If it would be still legal in USPSA, I could see doing it. Plus there is a not too small cool factor in a custom contour barrel. B)

  13. I'm already a GM in what not to do. In fact, I push the boundries of incompetence almost every time I shoot.

Shot the leg clean off a No-Shoot last weekend....

    Note to self.....

Do NOT drink a soda pop while reading posts on this forum.... or at least have spare keyboard on hand.

  14. Long over due update:

We had gone back the next month and were able to shoot. Alden was run through a new shooter orientation, and he shot the match and had a great time!

After all was said and done, things worked out for us and we both were able to participate in a great venue. The Match direcor/s work their backsides off designing, setting up, and running a great match.

  15. Brit....

    That sounds about right.

Maybe Tom Mainus will pop in here and tell you how he does it....He's wrong handed too. ;)

    HOP

Maybe Dave Hearth will chime in as well, for another lefty view. I know he was able to give my junior lefty shooter a good start for reloading. I can't remember just how my son does it and after beating me in the steel last weekend he's on his own anyway. I am in the switch hands camp, but thats the way I was taught from the start.
