  1. I’m in the US so we shoot USPSA, an offshoot of IPSC.  Shadow 2 is a great choice and should take you a long way in the sport.  Frankly, they’re the best money you can spend.  As to a press, 500 rounds a month would be fine on a square deal b.  650/750 will demolish that in no time if you can find a deal.  If you decide to load several calibers a 650/750 has much more utility.

  2. I'm also a fan of buy once cry once.  If you won't miss that cash place the order and rock on.  However, the Titan is single stack not double.  For the double it's a Nemesis.  That's a different game in USPSA and I'd not recommend that gun for 3 gun.  Having said that you've got a lot of options within that price range.  Even though I'm an atlas fanboy there are other builders out there.  Freedom Gun works, Matt Cheely Customs, Limcat, Infinity, to name a few.

  3. Atlas makes an excellent open gun.  Frankly at the price you buy an open gun, any of them should run great.  As to loading 9 major it's no big deal.  I jus started reloading myself last year and am pretty comfortable doing it.  I cheated a good bit and asked Adam for a recipe and worked my way up to it.  Originally I went 9 major because I was shooting Atlanta Arms and that what they make.  The reloading adventure has been pretty fun so far and it's way cheaper than Atlanta arms.

  4. I started with a Gock 34 in production.  Not realizing limited minor was a thing I jumped to a 2011 for USPSA and 3 gun.  If you’d like to kill two birds with one stone, kind of, get a .40 and run it in both 3 gun and USPSA. You'll lose a couple rounds of capacity but not n ought to matter in 3 gun. You could also go an entirely different route and build a PCC.  In 3 gun it takes the place of a pistol meaning less stuff and PCC in USPSA is amazingly fun.

Practice running with scissors I guess. IMHO, if you're not moving fast when the stage absolutely requires a good bit of movement to get to the next position, my guess is you're not leaving the first position hard enough. A quick explosion out of the first position will set you up for quick movement. Breaking the last shot, slowly dismounting the gun, and easing in the direction is just setting you up for slow movement. Likewise on the other end of the spectrum. Having the gun up and ready to fire the instant you have a decent sight picture is a must. I would work on running but also on entry / exits.

Planning the the stage to take targets while moving when possible will also naturally cut down on distance. Speaking of plans, are you programming and visualizing the stage in advance, or trying to "think" your way through the stage. I know you've seen someone fire their last shot in a position and have that brief hesitation with that "where do I go now" look on their face. Then they remember and start moving slowly. Also shot calling practice. Calling your last shot allows you to get moving faster.

It's very easy to practice these in dry fire. Just always be aware of muzzle direction and trigger discipline. Even in your walkthroughs, simulate having the gun down range and finger off the trigger when not engaging targets. As far as being completely comfortable running with a hot pistol, I'm not sure I'll ever get there. A little respect is a good thing and will help keep you out of Dairy Queen's drive through.

All common knowledge here I know. But sometimes we can't see the forrest for the trees. Just things that have helped me and still all a work in progress.

A good friend of mine diagnosed that same thing.  I’m not pushing off hard enough and I do apparently have a very very pregnant pause before I get moving.  I feel like I’m got good planning for a stage but it doesn’t seem to stick in my head.  My current style is post and blast to try and remove some of the movement in a stage.

  6. I’m  not sure this counts as a shooting technique but it’s like shooting adjacent.  I can’t seem to run during a stage.  No matter what I think I’m doing it’s an inelegant trot at it’s fastest.  When the 35 year old loses a stage to the senior citizen with two bad knees it’s time to start asking questions.  So I’m summary what did you do, if anything, to get comfortable running with a pistol?

My 15 round tube on my Benelli M2 can get front heavy is the only downside that I see.  Plus, if I don't sling tube up, the tube will drag on the ground and I look like a little kid.

Hit up taccom as he makes a carbon fiber extension tube.  I have a +8 on my 1301 and it weighs like 6 ounces or something.

  8. Seems like I'm in good company then.  My eye sight hasn't gone yet, but it will.  I do love gadgets and the guns do look awesome.  With the Atlanta Arms making 9mm major now that hurdle is taken care of.  I'm not expecting to win any matches.  I'm a C class shooter in Limited and I run like Hans from the Simpsons.  It just looks like fun.  Going to shoot the same buddy's open gun in a rifle/pistol match this weekend and see how I do.  Won't be the same as USPSA but it should be pretty close.  If I do like it, then it's time to get an open shotgun.

  9. Shot a buddy’s open gun a few weeks ago and it’s had me thinking since.   Currently shooting limited and PCC. Loving both but it almost always fun to lose in a new division.  For those of you who swapped into open what was the deciding factor?

  10. To me, the combo of box and red dot make open.  That’s likely too simplistic a view. I enjoy trying to load my shotgun with fast doubles.  However, tech isn’t static and if a box fed semi auto shotgun becomes commercially viable for Mossberg, Beretta, etc. we may have to adapt.  Or we say those aren’t what we want and we move forward.  I like my gadgets and gizmos but I’m good either way.  My 5 foot long shotgun I find hilarious and entertaining.

  11. So quick update. Shot my first match on Saturday and placed 37 out of 49 or 50.  I managed to hit a target on every stage.  I did end up buying an MPA bolt action in 6.5m and it's been flawless.  I gotta say, love not having to reset a stage as everything is steel.
