  1. Bottom line is, if you are looking to re-sell, the semi-custom from a name is easier to market with price point reference, but if you buy smart, once, then you'll be better served by the true custom.

Can you elaborate on this? I have a Nighthawk Talon right now and have been banging my head whether to sell it or not. How much difference would it be if I were to buy a STI Trojan and have Benny Hill or another reputable person work their magic on it? Is it the parts that they use or is it the attention to detail? both?

It would probably be a whole lot cheaper to get what you want done to the Talon, and just shoot that, provided you're ok with making the pistol somewhat unattractive on the used market from competition use and modifications. <shrug>

You've got a forged frame, custom-fit slide, match barrel, tool steel parts, etc. etc. Replace the sights to your liking, maybe get a different magwell...How much more magical do you think an $895 Trojan is going to be? :)

  2. Hi Guys, I will be shooting the Florida Open this year.

It is my fist time in USA and so I have no idea about a things in Florida and the Florida Open.

I tried to book a room at the Hotels previously mentioned in this thread, but all of them were booked up.

So I booked at one from Franks list:

The Green Gables Inn in Lake Wales.

    Does anybody know this Hotel?

Is it good, bad or average in cleanliness, comfort and cost???

Also, what sort of weather will it be like in Feb?

Will it be a t shirt and shorts weather?

    and

Are the Ranges built on sand or Gravel or???

    i.e. what type shoes?

and if there is any general advise that I would not think of in comparison of shooting in Europe?

But whatever, I am really looking forward to it.

Yaarr -- I'll let the natives answer the Florida weather questions, but I've stayed at the Green Gables 3x -- twice for the Open, and once for a class. Thought it was a decent enough motel for the price. Rooms were reasonably clean, and there's a free continental breakfast, so you can at least grab a cup of coffee and a doughnut or something. It's about 15-20min from the range, but an easy drive. There are a couple restaurants a short drive from the motel, and a pretty, uh, bland restaurant and bar adjacent to the motel.

Ranges are grassy-dirt: I'm bringing cleats, myself, this year.

  3. Awesome logs. I never thought about keeping maintenance logs for the firearms -- what a fantastic idea!

On another note -- in 2007 you moved to an Edge from the G35. What impact -- honestly -- do you think this had on your shooting?

I spent 2007 switching back and forth between my G35 and 2011, and made myself somewhat miserable because, psychologically, I am more comfortable with the Glock, and wasn't really seeing a huge pay-value in putting the work into changing platforms. Just curious.

  4. Well, if you asked Rescomp: "Hey, are these magazine holders designed for IPSC and USPSA competitions? Will they work with a 2-piece competition belt system?" It's not hard to guess what the answer would be. :)

I'm far more interested in the call on the Safariland 773 holders. Homie, your email bounced?

  5. Just walked in, and the latest Front Sight is in my hands....

  6. A 2-second Bill Drill is still a Master level pace, but 98% of the forum members have no trouble with it.

I posted on Glock talk the "fact" that a 2 second Bill Drill is a Master level time. That's was about how long it took Matt Burkett to post a gentle rebuttal that in his opinion a 2 second Bill Drill is no longer a Master time. A seach on GT should find the thread. I think Matt was of the opinion a 1.75 is more like a Master time. I also seriously doubt that 98% of the forum members can routinely churn out 2 second Bill Drills on demand. I would bet on it...

Don't know about anyone else, but I have shot the occasional .10 or less split with a Glock, with an XD, and with a CZ75B. If you shoot enough and "have it in you", it is goinig to happen... if you let it happen.

Well, I confess my reply was tongue-in-cheek, as you've gathered. Probably BSeevers is right -- most likely 98% of the Forum members, can't knock out a sub 2-second Bill Drill on demand. It's just that most of those responding can, so the thread gets skewed a bit.

I don't really know if 2.0 is Master class time or not; it sure seems like it, but then I'm barely an 'A'.... 1.75 seconds -- Christ, that's a 1.0 draw and hit, and 5 called .15 splits? Or some combination, thereof? On demand, that's up there.

Anyway. Interesting stuff. In my humble opinion (honestly), the magic of this drill is the difference between "6 A's as fast as you can go," vs. "As fast as you can go and hit 6 A's".

  7. wow... kind of a waste catching up... what crazy things go on in the off season!

    I can summarize...

A 2-second Bill Drill is still a Master level pace, but 98% of the forum members have no trouble with it.

If you're going to shoot it, do so COLD, brother, the moment you leave your car! No practice runs, no dry-draws nor sight picture. Hell, try not to even look at your gun, until you're shooting.

JThompson was thinking about stringing together some sub-.10 splits, and shooting the drill in under 1 second, but has other areas of his game that need work, instead.

The drill should be all "A's", but this is overlooked -- especially on YouTube clips.

Actually, it occurs to me that this 'Skills' forum is kinda obviated by classifiers. It's easy enough to find a Classifier stage the resembles the drill you want to work on -- 06-03 would seem to tie in nicely to Bill Drills, no? And you can plug in your HF and see exactly where you stand.

  8. Of course be careful, too, with FREE UPS shipping. Recently ordered 2k of Ranier 180gr bullets on a Cabela's special. With free shipping, and them still honoring the fall flyer special, it came out to something like 93.50/k. I have no idea how they shoot, in fact, but just need *something* that's in .40 S&W and weighs 180gr to practice with.

Expected 'em Monday, based on the UPS tracking....Hmm, no show. Tuesday no show, and I saw that the package had been damaged in transit -- "exception, shipper notified." Today the box showed up -- clearly repackaged, and taped up. About 500 bullets were loose, but I put them in a plastic container and based on the bathroom scale's weight I have 2022. Close enough, I guess....I just would hate to only get 1400, or so, and have 600 being swept up at some shipping depot. :(

From what I've read, this is SOP for this vendor.

  9. 50 yards.... Pull a tooth for each hit out of the A zone.

    The Thrill Drill.

    <grin> Don't miss! The Dentist's Drill!

This thread has been bugging me. Today I had to run an errand out of town, so I took a detour and stopped at the range I sometimes practice at (it's 'bout an hour away). Brought my production rig with a fairly stock G17.

Set up the target, measured 7 yards back, set the timer, and....First run was an abortion. 1 A, 3 C's, and 2 D's on the left of the target. Won't even mention the time since they're scored pass/fail.

OK. 2nd run, got my head in the game, and 2.10 -- 1.14 draw and .19ish splits. That's about the best I can do, and it's not cold, either.

I tried to kick it up a little and ended up slower (2.33) or with a hit wandering out of the A box. I will try this with my Limited gear in the next week or so. I captured a few runs on tape, and see that my surrender draw has some problems: my head and upper body is hunching down into the draw, instead of remaining motionless.

  10. I hate that a major online shooting retailer is screwing us on shipping. They have 100, 500 or 1000 bullets for sale but you have to pay for shipping. But if you get 2000 it's free freight. Sweet!!!

Except, they have everything in stock except the 2000 pack with free freight.

Give me a break! You can stick 2 - 1000 count packages in one box.

I know who you're talking about -- I sent them an email, and to their credit they responded promptly, but 'twas no help:

My question to them was: why not use flat rate boxes, and why are you out-of-stock of the 2k "free shipping" offers, but have 1k of the same bullet available? Here is the reply:

    Dear Mr. King:

Thank you for your email. Flat Rate service allows one to ship anything one can fit into the provided box (up to 50 lbs) for a flat fee of about $10. We cannot currently offer this service because we have no way of guaranteeing a customer that shipping price. We give the shipping charge when the order is placed and the credit card is also charged at that time. If we give the shipping quote as Flat rate for $10 and we start to pack the order and find out that it won't fit, we have to contact each customer with a new shipping quote, get authorization for a second charge, and hold the orders (taking up massive amounts of warehouse space) until we can do so. If we can't contact a customer, we would have to cancel the order. With around 3,000 packages shipping every day, this is simply not possible.

We do use flat rate boxes to offer free freight on some items. If you go to our website and search on the words "free freight", you will see all the items we pre-pack in flat rate boxes and offer with no shipping charges. We apologize if they are out of stock from time to time.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

  11. Eye-opening thread. Flex, were you drinking when you posted this poll?

Apparently it's not the Indian after all -- it's the headdress.

I've shot with people wearing a backwards cap (I think; I can't really remember noticing), but also with men wearing skirts kilts; folks drooling spit tobacco and dressed like cast extras from "Smokey and the Bandit;" dressed like Doc Holliday; people stuffing 60lbs of belly fat into Under Armor; D shooters bedazzled with vanity sponsorships, etc., etc., etc. There's no end to vanity nor accounting to what some think is "cool." If the shooters are fun to shoot with, and upbeat -- who really gives a f*ck? Seriously.

Sure, there's teasing, but there's also something a lot uglier and we all know where that line is.

  12. Ah hell. A cold -1 kicked ass for me and it was slightly/way above my ability cold. I shot a couple more after and froze the trigger every time.

    61% shooter

Not to be pedantic, but...did you actually shoot any Bill Drills?

I'm fascinated by these kinds of drills and understanding the difference between shooting it, maybe a couple times, and having it be a happy accident that all 6 shots are in the A, and shooting it so that there is zero doubt all 6 shots are in the A -- as if for every C, you'd get a tooth pulled.

  13. Yeah, I knew I'd regret posting that....I guess I was struck by a C-shooter (no, not anyone here, or regularly here) shooting 1.4* drills, with sub .7 second draw, etc. My words were too strong, and I apologize. :(

It's not so much dishonesty, as just ONLY hearing from those who *can* shoot < 2 second bill drills, but I think this is true of most of the "skills." Strictly from reading that thread, you'd think 2 seconds is reasonable for some C shooters, and by natural extension pretty average for B and A shooters.

It's like the threads on the plate rack. One might think cleaning the rack in under 3 seconds is a pretty average feat, but in stages I've seen that feature a rack, *some*, but not most, are shooting those times.

  14. For those competitors that must bag at the end of the stage, rather than rely on the apparently impractical holster...here's a thought!

Why not fold a 1-gallon Ziploc bag, and place in your hip pocket?

The RO or scoring officer doesn't have to act as bearer.

No one has to wait while the shooter's buddy puts down the video equipment, then runs the bag across the field course to the shooter.

The plastic just has to be substantial enough to let the shooter bring it back to his range bag. <shrug> Only partly kidding....

  15. Thx all....Looks way cool. I was looking at some video on YouTube of Angus shooting some steel match, and on some of the hits in the clip it was hard to tell the plate was hit; that's why I was wondering. Internet video sucks, regardless.

There's a Steel Challenge match 2.5 hours away, which is bit far to drive, but I've never tried it and it looks like fun, and it's part of the game I need to vastly improve on. :/

  16. No -- you can have ammo and the gun in the same bag. Last time I flew to a match, however, the TSA secondary screeners had to check with "a supervisor" because they'd never seen so much ammo in a suitcase before (5 x boxes of 50), and it was a minor wait and hassle.

I think also think it's a good idea to dig up some factory ammo boxes from the trash at the range, or wherever, to again smooth the way.

I have had no trouble marking the box "ORM-D" on the outside, and taking it to a UPS Store, even. That said, I don't know WTF UPS does to the boxes enroute -- twice now, both times to Frostproof (FL Open and a class) it arrived with the MTM cases busted up, and the ammo loose. :(

  17. C'mon, he's a desendent of Davy Crockett!!! :blink::blink:

Apparently Davy was this kids "10th great grandfather," or "10th great Paw Paw" in Arkanese. 13 generations back? The mind boggles if you do the math. 'Course Paw Paw is really only 28, himself. <grin>

I'm sorry -- little noble about this story, IMO. My guess is, if details emerge it will be more like "Monster Pig!" (Remember *that* charming tale?). Paw Paw couldn't even tell Tre hit the animal, so I'm guessing it wasn't the "one-shot, one-kill" scenario some would like to believe. 5 years old seems wicked young. I understand it's a tradition at an early age; evidently hunting is learned before English! <grin>

How do you pronounce "Tre", out of curiosity? Is the 'e' long like tree? Or does it rhyme with, uh....gre. :)

(I find this story tough to bear).

eta: Here's a link with the video from the KATV, and pictures of the youth rifle, interview the kindergarnter and his family. Heh. >Bear video< Tree better put on a helmet, when he rides that ATV, or he might become a stump!

  18. [some stuff deleted....]

It would still be nice to have OUR LEADERS post the info on the USPSA website.

Dale said something interesting on the USPSA Forums (most posts on which are months or *years* old) -- why not let USPSA rent a forum space here, instead? Seriously. How many members are hitting USPSA forums but don't know about this forum? And for those that don't, it would do 'em good. Like shooting vitamins. :)

  19. Hi everyone,

I for one am glad that they purchased it. Not to stir the pot, but after 08 the best thing for the Challenge would be to move it the heck out of California. Not to make it political, with their restrictive gun laws and anti gun attitudes in the state why do we reward them by running a national level match there. I suggest we move it to Rio Salado here in Arizona. We already have the facility, the competitors (we run what is probably the nations largest weekly steel match every Tuesday night) The Steel Callenge was in Piru becasue Mike and Mike were there now if they no longer own the match there is no reason to keep the match there. Sorry if I offended and people from the country of Calfornia, but that is my opinion.

Help me understand? You don't wish to make this thread political, but you think the Steel Challenge Match -- by all accounts successful, and more so each year -- should be moved to punish California shooters.

    Just checking. :)

Oddly enough, I've always felt success is defined through adversity. How much more honorable to continue and grow the tradition, in spite of opposition, than to snatch it away, and run.
