1. IMHO the question is legit but asked in a poor manner. Regardless, all valid points have been made.

My question, if match fees went from $20-25 to $45-50 but with the higher match fee, you show up, shoot and go home. No setup or tear down. Would you pay the extra cost?

If there were two matches of equal quality within an hours drive of your home, one charged $20 but you would be expected to help setup and tear down and the other was $40 but you just show up and shoot and leave when finished. Which would you attend regularly?

2. Have you tried different ammo? My M2 will do that with certain types of ammo. Winchester, Federal, Rio all cause problems. Fiocchi runs all day. I think it has something to do with the shape of the crimp.

3. Deprime and SS pins, Hot water, Dawn and lemi shine  in a tumbler makes your brass look like jewelry.

I do the same without the SS pins. Works great and I never have to worry about pins stuck in the primer hole.

4. Seems to be a theme developing! LTD minor is not a wise choice. If you are stuck on shooting LTD, buy a .40. If you want to shoot only 9mm, pick another division; Production or CO.

When I was starting out, many time I was given good advice but stubbornly went my own way. It cost me a lot of money trading gear and guns when I finally saw the light. Don’t be like me!

I have thought about the Sig Max 40 for SS.  Anything you don't like about it?

The only two things I don't like; it came as a series 80 and it does not fit in a standard 1911 holster. For my 40 I removed the Series 80 parts and installed a spacer. Did some trigger work on both and they have a crisp 2.5lb pull. The 45 I use for IDPA that still has the Series 80 parts is just a touch mushier than the 40. Sigs have a unique slide profile. I used a Bladetech OWB for a while with extra spacers. Then purchased a DAA PDR Pro II which worked great. Most recently I bought a GX Products holster for IDPA and it may be the best holster I own! Tempted to sell the DAA holster and order another GX Products holster for USPSA. http://gxproductsusa.com GX has a unique retention system for USPSA a great paddle system for IDPA. Best fit and finish of any kydex holster I have put my hands on.

I have had no problems with my Sig Max's except for some 40 ammo I loaded. It was not a gun problem but an ammo maker problem! Both guns have roughly 5,000 rounds through them. I would buy again. I thought about getting one in 9mm but can't find one.

6. I have 2 Sig 1911 Max’s I use in SS. One in 40 and one in 45. Decent guns for the money. The external extractor turns the traditionalists off but they run. Just sold a Springfield Range Officer in 9mm. It was a little to fussy about ammo. A 9mm 1911 shoots great. May replace it with a Dan Wesson PM9.

Even the Syntech ammo that I run in matches hits 145 PF out of a G34. Where are you guys finding factory ammo that does 130-135PF?

I reload and it’s for $ savings (although not that much saving in 9 minor) but also I really like the softer recoil with my own ammo.

I’ll be honest though, reloading is a pain in the butt. I’m not one of those guys who enjoys it, to me it’s a chore. Everyone likes to talk about how many rounds per hour they can knock out.
They don’t talk about collecting brass on the range, cleaning it, sorting it (by headstamp if you want consistency). They don’t talk about filling primer tubes or case gauging and inspecting every round. Adjusting your machine for different loads. Of course not everyone does all of those things but it’s all a part of reloading and it all takes time.

I can't say for sure with 9mm but Precision Delta 40 match ammo runs 169 PF out of my Atlas Titan and 170 out of my Sig 1911 Max. It would be my assumption their 9mm would be similar as they load for competition use. I have used Freedom's ProMatch some in the past as well. It ran a little hotter but still under 175.

I just don't trust Freedom/Xtreme much lately. I ordered 5000 200gr 40's and received mixed boxes of 180's and 200's. Cost me at a major last year. I got bumped down to minor because the bullets were 180's but loaded for 200's. Never thought to weigh the bullets before but I do now! Found 3 of the last 6 boxes were marked 200gr but were 180's. Trust but verify!

8. So Sean_ht 's original question is weather he needed to shoot hand loaded ammo to make GM. Personally the ammo has a very small impact on the ability to manipulate the gun to make GM.

The discussion has gone towards the cost. If he wants to shoot lower power factor loads in 9mm or 40 but does not want to invest the time and money into reloading, I think the best option is a reputable manufacturer of competition specific ammo (regardless of cost). Precision Delta, NCShooters, Outdoor Dynamics...etc. all offer both practice and match ammo that would keep the PF around 130 for 9mm and 170 for 40 (depending on the gun) and do it for about the same cost of Federal or some other standard factory ammo. Plus the PF on regular factory ammo is going to be more in the 135-145 for 9mm and 175-185 for 40 range depending on the company and product.

I personally shoot my on hand loads for practice and local matches but shoot Precision Delta for major matches. PD has never failed me in a match. I can't say that much for my hand loads! lol

9. I agree with rowdyb, if you are just trying to have fun and get better then shoot what you have. If you change your mind later and want to be more competitive then you can change your equipment. With two small ones, your time may be limited anyway.

10. I have 2 Sig Max 1911’s, one in 40 and one in 45. I bought the 45 to shoot IDPA CDP and the 40 to shoot USPSA SS. Like mentioned above, 40 is cheaper and I already load it for LTD. Not sure I would download to minor for SS. If I wanted to shoot minor, I’d get a 9mm.

Now I will say the Sig in 40 is a little more finicky. 45 just runs. Could be mag issues but I have only had issues with the 40. Good guns for the money but they are Series 80’s. That may upset some people. You can replace the 80 parts with a spacer for USPSA but you can’t disengage safeties in IDPA.

11. Willing to wait... what... 10 weeks? For either an ALL IN model (Race Ready or 3 Gun), or something built to your liking in their Race Shop? When most other builders are 4-6 months and more?

Exactly, short wait times at Atlas and Phoenix Trinity (PT). But much longer wait times at other custom builders.

12. Both. Not the absolute best in performance. Not bad but Performance and quality but certainly not the best either. Customer service... yea not the best either.
this guy is just racing to 50 posts anyway and I don’t agree with his claims.

I agree with your assessment of the quality. I have less than 5k rounds through my Titan and have had the small front grip screw and bushing fall out and an extractor break. Performance is always subjective. The gun does everything it was advertised to do. My experience with the service has been nothing short of outstanding.

I have shot a Nemesis and it is a nice gun. But there are a lot of excellent guns in that price range. What Atlas is offering is faster delivery than most custom shops. Seems like PT is trying to do the same with the Hancho. If you are willing to wait, there may be better choices than either Atlas or PT.

13. I love my Atlas Titan and the Honcho looks very interesting but if you not in any huge hurry, Dan Wesson has a new gun coming for 2020, the DWX. 1911 style trigger and safeties but built like a CZ Shadow 2. MSRP is less than $2,000. It uses CZ P09 mags so they will be reasonably priced. You will be able to buy 2 DWX’s for what one Atlas or PT gun will cost. Looks very interesting! Just a thought.
