  1. "Challenge coin"?

Are they not just the "nuts" Duane? Craig and his staff did a great job and his dedication is appreciated. I have talke do many people and they were as jazzed about the match as I was. This challenge coin was a real classy thing to do, sort of like fraternal to all of us who shot the match.

    Peace be with you.......

  2. Regardless of what anyone else says it is refreshing that a major match finally enforced the rulebook to the best of their abilities. I have been to matches where the gun was weighed, I have been to matches where it was put in the box but I have never had the safety mechanisms checked on the gun and I certainly have never had all three done in conjunction with being chrono'd. That includes two Nationals, the Carolina Cup and a dozen or so other major matches. By the looks of it there are a number of shooters who weren't expecting you to do it. I think in the long run it is healthy for the sport. Good for you.

I think all the equipment checks were done in a fair and consistent manner. As I have said many times before, in my area of the country, the S&W league set the standard in running an IDPA match when we were starting out with our own programs in Upstate NY. That is still the way it is in my mind. And how about the challenge coin, what a classy gesture.

  3. We managed to gather 6-7 of us from the Albany/Saratoga "UPSTATE" area of NY to support the Indoor National IDPA match and had a great time. I do not recall seeing the others listed below while I was there. Gary Hellmers used to run a fine IDPA regional match years ago.

Thanks for keeping things alive in NYS Bill !

Where is the West-Cental NY contingent (Staub, the Seemans the Suttons, Toni Dragotta and the crew) on the S&W Indoor Nationals roster?

We were hoping all of our NYS friends would come back this time.

  4. Thats where the Albany, Saratoga IDPA members must have migrated to, Rochester, Tioga and Owego.

I shoot at the Genesee Conservation League (GCL) in Penfield , NY which is just East of Rochester.

We have IDPA matches every month which bring in 30 to 40 shooters all through the winter on the big indoor ranges and then outdoor when the weather breaks.

See new faces all the time too which is great!

We have BUG gun matches as side shoots.

In the summer we have rifle and shotgun side shoots as well.

So IDPA is alive and prospering in Rochester!

Great match at S&W Nationals Bones! I can't complement you enough! Best I ever shot too!

  5. Hey J,

I will tell you we could sure use a visit from you once in a while. There is a small league where we host monthly match's outside and of course there is practice at Sara Spa as usual. Even I am there. Then of course we have the league of misfit toys that no one can play with. Most of us now shoot USPSA as well. How have you been?

    Dennis

I was just looking back over the last year and I realized there was no NYS regional match this year. Has there been a decline in IDPA for the great People's Republic of NY? As the SOI for NYS I have only had one class this year, for 6 people. One of our clubs hosted an SOI class that Dr. John conducted for 8-10. Anyone have any ideas as to why this once very vibrant and active activity in NY has dwindled? We once had a rouster of 150 shooters in the Albany/Saratoga area in 2001 and three seperate leagues. Now there are 2 that are open to ALL IDPA shooters in this area and only one has monthly match's that yield 8-10 shooters.

    Dennis

So this is what happens when I leave? Gee, what kind of club isn't open to ALL IDPA shooters?

  6. If you are buying the Glock for the "game", I would suggest you go with the G34. If you currently shoot IDPA or USPSA, perhaps you can use another persons 34/17 at a practice or match and see the differences before you buy. As far as my setup, I currently do not own any Glocks, but have owned the G17, G21, G30, and the G36 and all were stock and worked like a watch. But again, if you want to progress in the game, I have seen people really make forward progress the most with the G34.

I'm toying with the idea of acquiring a glock to shoot in the game. No firm plans, but it got me thinking about what I'd eventually end up with.

I know I can pick it up and run straight out of the box, If I don't buy a used competition gun I probably will. But I'd love to hear what some of the "plastic perfection lovers" favorite set ups involve.

prefer the 17 or the 34 or the 22 or the 35

    Trigger work?

    sights?

    magwell?

    drop free mags?

    bbl?

And any other tips you'd like to post.

  7. Craig,

I had some thoughts on this post of yours,,,,,,,,,,,

    Dennis

... it's not as restrictive as it could be.

The outdoor IDPA Nationals requires (2) Major matches, and USPSA Nationals are much more so as well.

We discussed at length a (2) match requirement to be consistent with the outdoor Nationals but finally decided on the (1) match requirement for 2009.

The number of low and no light stages in this match add to the level of complexity and difficulty compared to some other outdoor IDPA matches, especially for those new to the sport. We wanted to take all reasonable measures to ensure everyone is well-prepared and the highest levels of safety are maintained.

Also, it is a National Championship. We made a number of conscious changes to certain policies and procedures to bring it more in line with that level of competition.

Further, we wanted to support all those who have supported the sport over the past year. The (1) Major match requirement allows folks who joined us last year to return.

We hope you get more involved in IDPA next season and choose to join us in 2010,

    Craig

  8. Craig,

I did plan to be there, but I will take any load data you have for 4in 686 38spl.

    Dennis

Thanks to all who registered early and our fantastic Registration and Stats team - we are well on our way to filling. We had a few issues with PayPal and dial-up connections, but we resolved those with individuals as best we could.

The Friday and Saturday squads are full, but there are still slots left on Thursday. Thursday's a great day to shoot the match - everybody knows it never snows in New England on Thursday.

Thanks again for all the compliments. We're working hard on the stages and events to earn them on match day as well.

    Best Regards,

    Craig

  9. I think you have the best from NY with Dale.

  10. Maybe you would be interested in being an SOI for your area of NYS, it is needed out that way. I would be glad to make a suggestion to Robert Ray to get that to happen. Couple folks from out past Buffalo came out here to Schenectady to get the CRO class in so they would be able to start a league as per the IDPA requirements.

Hello fellow shooters. I was given a heads up to the note from Dennis Sherman regarding any IDPA activity in upstate NY so I thought I would give some input. IDPA is not only alive and kicking, but growing in upstate NY. I am currently the match director for the Tioga County Sportsmen's Association (TCSA) in Owego NY, just slightly west of Binghamton. This coming season will be my 5th year as MD. We hold matches on the 4th Saturday of each month starting in March and through October. Our last match in November is usually moved to the 2nd Saturday to get it off Thanksgiving week.

I will agree with your assessment of the weather being rainy a lot but we went through the season with only one washout (October 2008) In 2007 no rainouts at all (we were just as amazed). We desperately try not to cancel.

We welcome all shooters and there are 2 other clubs in the area within 35 miles - 1 in Sayre PA, the other in Maine NY

    Check out this website http://www.nepaidpascores.net/

It covers the Northeast NY/PA clubs and it shows attendance numbers

Hope to see you at one our matches. If you're ever interested, my contact information is listed on that web site for TCSA

  11. Up here in the Albany/Saratoga area, we consider Binghampton to be Southern Tier, lol. I am happy to hear IDPA is very active where you are located. I shot 3 of the State match's out that way hosted at Cortland some years back and they did a great job. A couple of us have been keeping what there is of IDPA "alive" since we started shooting it at Sara Spa in the late 90's. I along with 3-4 other dedicated people formed Sara Spa IDPA, Guan Ho Ha IDPA, Iraquios IDPA as well as Woodlawn IDPA. I have a desire to see this sport stay around for the core principles that attracted me to it in 1999. As I said in my original post, we once had around 150 IDPA members, and over the years have maybe 30 are still around. Again, glad things are going well down your way, IDPA has been big there for some time.

  12. I have had one of those in my hand and it is a neat product. However, I think it will require as much training as the lights most of us use, e.g. surefire. Its a different design of a tool. If I did not have a half dozen white lights in my collection, I would buy one. I am also reminded that in my area, we shoot indoors in the Winter and do very little low light, no light shooting practice as our match's are for the most part outside. Only time we ramp up practice for that part of IDPA shooting is if folks we practice with are going to the S&W match for a few weeks previous. Back in the day, 99-02, we used to load a van and 6-8 of us would go to the S&W league match's in Springfield in preperation of thier match. 4 hours total drive to shoot 50 rounds, but it was more to get used to the range's and movers and such.

I am considering buying a 9mm 1911 to use in ESP for IDPA. I want to have a spare gun in the range bag in case I have a failure during a match. Does it have to be exactly the same as the one I started the match with? For example, if I use an STI Trojan 5.0 9mm and it breaks, can I pull a Kimber Tactical Pro II 9mm or a Para LTC 9mm out of the range bag and finish the match or would this be against the rules since the original gun is a 5" 1911 and the other guns are 4" 1911's? I would think logically that as long as they were both 1911 pattern guns in the same caliber and the same capacity and both legal for the division you are competing in, it shouldn't matter, but I want to make sure. I just hate to spend the money on two identical guns if I can get a little variety and still use it as a backup.
  13. As I continue on the downward spiral that is my participation in the action pistol sports, before I am done, I will host a major match where the SO's and the organizers will shoot the match for fun and not be part of the match results. This way, it will be a true surprise to those who compete and no one will have an advantage. Its not popular with most, but my old shooting pal Dale once suggested it and I think its a great idea.

I hope we get to debate in person at the 2009 S&W IDPA Indoor National Championship Duane.

After reviewing and refining the COFs over the last few days, I'm sure we'll have several rounds of drinks worth of topics to discuss.

With the right perspective, the rulebook gives quite a bit of lattitude to come up with many varied and safe stage designs. Insignificant distractions can really make things interesting.

    Hope to see you there-

    Craig

  14. Rob,

Sorry for my comments, and I understand what you are saying. I will PM the details about the results, in kind.

    Dennis

Dennis - I know what *YOU* were asking and, if your message had been an email or private communication, would have stuck to the question asked.

BUT.... this is a public forum frequented by our members and a post such as yours will raise two obvious questions in the minds of many of our members visiting this forum - specifically, "what happened" and "were our members involved". It was those other readers, and not yourself, to whom I directed the additional info.

    As to results ....

I personally consider three weeks excessive (I'd even consider anything over a week excessive), especially since the internet means there is no "delivery delay". The clubs out here in the eastern parts tend to have results out within a few days (in many cases, the same day as the match). What did the club president say when you asked about his policy on the timeframe for match results?

  15. Hi Rob,

Pretty sure I was asking about the 2009 USPSA/IDPA shooting season at Westfield, not as to whom was running the event when the child was killed. While you are here, as the area 7 director, do you think it is reasonable that local USPSA match's have the results available within 3 weeks?

    Dennis

I spoke with Judith a few weeks ago, and she did not have any news to report at the time.

The terrible incident was the death of an 8 year old shooting a Micro-Uzi at a machine gun exhibition/shoot held at the club and run by a company owned by a small town police chief in MA. Neither Judith, nor any other members of here USPSA group at Westfield, were not involved in any aspect of running that event.

  16. Was wondering if anyone had any updates about the status of the Westfield club in terms of USPSA/IDPA match's in 2009. I made it out to Chris and Judith's IDPA program once this summer and it was first class. They both of course are very great shooters in thier own right and very helpful to others getting started. I was curious if things have settled since the terrible incident this past fall.

  17. Yup,

Thats the deal in NY, you must have a permit that takes 4-6 months to get. I am not looking for the IDPA vs USPSA. Any shooting sport is a good one, all a matter of choice.

I didnt shoot anything in NY. I was told by sherrifs dept to bring all my guns in for them to lockup for my own safety, then I could fill out a bunch of paperwork and in 6 months or so if approved maybe I could get my guns back. I asked where I could apply for my church liscense and left.

Have you checked USPSA match numbers in the area ? Not want to start a this versus that but for me I enjoy USPSA more and dont shoot IDPA. I drive 2 hours plus to shoot USPSA and dont shoot IDPA matches within 45 minutes.

  18. In shooting this sport since 1999 both in the local area as well as many regional matches, I have seen plenty of off the wall courses of fire. This was just another lack of enough information in the course description. RO's get angry when a person can think on thier feet and adapt and use what they can to solve a problem and after they watch the shooter prevail, they remember what they forgot to write in the course description and start the penalty phase.

The bigger issue here for me is that why would you want to try and confuse the shooter with a bunch of extra words such as the 2nd issue. A good way to ensure that you have some people not return is to be unprofessional and leave information out of a course of fire and then try to ding them after the fact.

I recall a state match where we were required to do a one handed reload, using the weak hand only. You can just imagine the danger this created for some people. It was stupid, period.

While I go with the crowd and shoot the low light/ no light stuff, I feel that if I never shot another stage with it, I would be fine. The firearms I have for my defensive use all have mounted lights on them, and all concerned in my posse are well versed in thier use. In my simple mind, IDPA should allow the use of mounted lights, then maybe these match killing, time wasteing stages would be gone, lol.

Guys two interesting scenarios came up this week at a local match- let me know what you think should have happened:

    1) Indoor low light stage:

START POSITION: Seated at table, back touching chair’s back with hands on Xs on table. Unloaded firearm and either 3 magazines or 4 speed loaders/moonclips (all loaded to division capacity) placed on the table. Flashlight placed on the table. No concealment is required.

STAGE PROCEDURE: On the start signal load your gun and take out the 4 threats in both tactical priority and tactical sequence with 3 shots each. All firing must be done from behind the table between the “X” marks on the table.

On the buzzer a shooter clicked their flashlight on (a large high power one) while it was laying on the table pointing down range. Shooter shot with two hands on the gun and never touched flashlight after.

Qustions: Is this legit? He got a procedural and was told it was almost an FTDR. The COF didn't say how the flashlight was to be used but this did sound like trying to gain an unfair advantage... Thought?

    2) Skill drill:

START POSITION: At P1 facing down range, handgun and 2 ammunition carriers loaded with 6 rounds each. Concealment is not required.

STAGE PROCEDURE: This is a skill drill testing speed reloading, target evaluation and target transition. On the start signal, the first six rounds are fired at T1 and then the first speed reload is conducted. The first four shots after the reload (rounds 7, 8, 9 and 10) must be shot at T2-T5, only one shot on each target, shooters choice as to what order to engage T2-T5. Rounds 11 and 12 are shot at T1. A second speed reload is conducted and the last six shots are fired at T1. Of the 14 shots fired at T1, 6 must be head shots. It is the shooter’s choice as to when to engage the heads.

Question: A shooter was having major jams during the use of all 3 magazines. Only about 4 out of 6 of each magazine were used. At the end of the 3rd magazine- with several missing shots the shooter pulled a 4th magazine out of his pocket and finished the remaining shots. Should this shooter get a procedural for using more than the allowed "3" magazines? If so- do you remove the best points from all the shots fired from the 4th magazine? It was limited vickers and he didn't use more than the required shots but several rounds did come from a 4th mag.

  19. I shoot the Watervliet program and I hope you get there next summer. They used to host the AWARE years back and the original people have retired, if you will.

Dennis, just one man's opinion, but last year I got back

into shooting after a 12 year layoff:)) and tried both

IDPA and IPSC (I had shot IPSC years ago, but was

intrigued by IDPA being more practical).

After shooting both for most of the year, I found that I

couldn't shoot both - every time I reloaded, I Dropped

the Mag and reloaded - and got a foul. And, I shot the

Standards the last time I tried IDPA,and told myself,

"Don't Drop The Mag", and I dropped the mag, anyway.

I found that I really enjoyed IPSC more, so I dropped

    the IDPA altogether.

I've also tried to make it up to Albany twice this year for

the monthly IPSC match on Sat, but wasn't able to make

either - hope to next year. If you shoot IPSC as well, I'll

    see you next summer.
