  1. Wow that's crazy. Glad you caught it! Do you think it happened with the Power Pistol loads? I guess it was a good excuse to upgrade your barrels. :)

Good call on the 8 pounder of Titegroup, I really have had good luck with it, it is one of my favorite powders.

  2. I was just curious, I started loading .40 recently myself, I have been using 4.2 grains of Titegroup with 165 gr Xtreme bullets and seems to be a nice little target load. I haven't had the chance to chrono them yet, I have run into the same problem with too much work and not enough daylight.

I completely understand that one, do whatever you feel is necessary to be careful and confident in your loads.

I can't speak to Power Pistol, as I have never used it. From what I have read it is a little slower burning powder with quite a bit of muzzle flash, so I have never tried it since I am mainly loading ammo for practice and matches.

  3. I hate to be that guy, but why not just stick with 4.5 grains of Titegroup? You said it shot great and to your desired POI, seems like you are searching for the answer to a non existent problem.

I do understand your concern about it being a somewhat dense powder, but you could always get a light or a mirror, anything to make you feel comfortable verifying your powder charge in every case.

  4. The OAL of 1.235 was spot on with my Bayou 200gr LSWC bullets to achieve what I think I need. I'll test fire them soon.

This was the sweet spot for me as well. 200 gr Bear Creek SWC, 4.6 grains Titegroup. 1.235 OAL, crimp .469.

I used to load them longer to 1.250 but found I would have hangups every so often. 1.235 seemed to take care of that issue, runs just fine in Kimber TLE and Sig 220.

  5. Unless you want full power (heavy recoil) loads for clearing bowling pin tables, see if you can trade it to someone for a faster powder like regular Clays, WST, Red Dot / Promo. I tried it in .45 with 230gr FMJ, and was not happy. I love it in 9mm with 124-147gr bullets though. It behaves totally differently there, and really needs high pressure to burn properly.

I agree, since it's a slower powder I never tried it in .45 and I saved it for 9mm. Had pretty good results in 9mm with 125 gr bullet, I believe I was loading 3.8 grains of Universal.

  6. I have had the same problem with some 38 Special brass, some of the rims seem to big or otherwise out of spec and can't get them in the shellplate or only out with some difficulty. I just scrap those and move on, I don't want to have to fight with them or have it lock up my press either.

I haven't had too many problems with 9mm, .40, or .45. Other than AMERC, IMT, Ammoload, and others mentioned above that I scrap immediately.

You can probably loosen/tighten your shell plate... I had an issue early on where I had my 550 shell plate too tight and brefly wrestled with this for other calibers. Then the light switch came on...

It's not an issue when I load 9mm, 40, or 45. Only with 38 Special. I snug the shell plate down but don't over tighten it since I don't want to snap the shell plate screw in the middle. I suppose I could play with it some though, loading on a Square Deal B.

  7. I have noticed that GFL doesn't havent the primer pocket centered uniformly sometimes. I still load them though for practice and local matches, seems to be decent brass. I also load Tula, CBC, Fiocchi, PPU, etc.

The only ones I scrap are the ones with the internal ledge like Ammoload and IMT. Also Crap AMERC and the Chinese LY stuff.

  9. That wouldn't surprise me about the LY brass being soft, it seemed pretty out of spec too. I primed some LY brass and about half of the primers slid about halfway out of the primer pocket just by moving them a little and the rest could be easily pushed out with a paper clip. I scrapped the rest and any more that I find.

  10. I always toss AMERC and have now started to toss Ammoload and IMT brass, I've seen too many pictures of failures with that and the ledge worries me even with minor range loads. I have also started to scrap LY 93 brass, Chinese brass with loose primer pockets. I don't trust that either.
