  1. The Independant reported in an article headlined "Gun crime increases to record levels", that gun-related crime in Britain had increased to record highs.

    The British daily wrote:

Gun crime has risen to a record level while violent offences recorded by the police have increased by 11 per cent, according to new figures revealed yesterday.

Firearms offences rose by three per cent to 10,590 in the year to June 2004, compared with the same period in the previous year.

How can gun crime possibly be on the increase seeing as how the British government completely banned civilian-ownership of handguns--except .22-caliber target pistols--in 1997?

Can it possibly be that criminals and not sports-shooters are the culprits?

Can it possible be that in addition to breaking laws related to property and person that criminals would even go so far as to break the law regarding gun ownership?

  2. Thanks for the messages of support guys, commenting in order:

mpolans: Civilian--journalist (although I'm ex-military). As for my involvement in shooting in Japan, I'm in IPSC Japan. (See my introduction in Miscellaneous Beginner Greetings from Japan for more details)

SiG Lady: I had gotten used to them--until Kobe. Looking at people's faces around the newsroom yesterday, it seemed like every one had decreased their mental countdown timers to "The Big One" by four digits.

What were you doing in Anchorage?

  3. Having just sat through four prolonged temblors at work, I can definitely say that earthquakes have replaced typhoons as No. 1 on my Hate List.

I didn't like the four we had in Tokyo today any better that the three that woke me up in the early a.m. last week.

Many more of them and I'm going to put myself up for adoption on the Internet by a family that lives in a country that has nice quiet well-behaved geography that knows its place and stays in it.

  4. Just had one of the twice-yearly health checks at work today.

Everything was going fine until I got to the hearing test station, where I sat down, put on the headphones, heard a beep and immediately jumped up and dashed over to the eye-testing station and attempted to engage the eye chart.

  5. Air-soft certainly allows a new slant on running the Tueller Drill.

Hi Rainman. Greetings from California and welcome to the forums!

    What is the Tueller Drill?

Perhaps y'all can give me some guidance on protocol hwere. Should I post a description of the Tueller Drill here, or in the Training Techniques forum?

  6. Thanks for the warm welcomes, I look forward to seeing y'all in Bali.

If you have a free moment, I would enjoy hearing about IPSC activity in Japan - particularly the use of air-soft guns.  From the winning performance  of some Japanese shooters, I take it their airsoft practice routines are extremely effective.

Yes, air-soft is the only game in town in Japan. But you can do a lot with it within its confines--the major of which, of course, is lack of recoil.

However, it's better than just dry-shooting and offers the plus of being able to set up stages inside the family home--without earning a visit from the local SWAT team :D

I understand some U.S. instructors, such as Karl Rehn of KR Training are recognizing the value of air-sfot as part of training

Air-soft certainly allows a new slant on running the Tueller Drill.

  7. Hi:

I've just joined this forum and would like to introduce myself. I'm a Tokyo-based journalist and a member of IPSC Japan, having just shot my first match at the PPSA Production Nationals at Clark Eagles in the Philippines.

I'd like to thank all the members of the PPSA who gave me a real down-home welcome.

    Thanks
