  1. I'm registering for our state shoot and shooting a match tomorrow as well as a new IDPA member. I'm also retired U.S. Navy. Curious to know why anyone, especially retired personnel, would register as military? I'm not inferring anything bad or good about it, just would like to know what your reason/s are if you do or don't? happy shooting, dv
  2. I need some advice for the summer's shooting. I'm trying to decide between a 12 week USPSA style weekly league (good people, fun time) -OR- weekly practice on my own with drills from various places like Saul Kirsch's and Mike Seeklander's books and others. Due to ammo cost I need to choose one or the other. Goal: I am not classed in IDPA or USPSA, I have no particular goal to classification. I really just like shooting and want to work on skill-building. I lean more toward IDPA than USPSA. I know from experiece that the league, in and of itself without side-practice, will tend to exacerbate poor skill traits versus improve them. I plan to shoot 1-2 IDPA shoots and/or select USPSA shoots per month throughout the summer. Any advice? Thanks and happy shooting, dv
  3. Maybe throw those in about 1/2 gallon boiling water with 1-2 tablespoons Lemi-Shine - can be found in the dishwashing detergent section at the grocery store. They'll probably turn a rosy-pink and you can re-tumble them again after drying. happy shooting, dv
  4. Yes, I use it for dry fire reload practice also. And WTH is an add karma button? That last sentence was pretty funny. Happy shooting, dv
  5. This is related to my post about LOP for shotguns for 3-gun - can't put a link to the post since I'm new (really??). Can't put a link to the ATI Akita Adjustable Shotgun Stock, either, since I'm new (again, really??). I saw some reviews and they seemed positive. Can't put a link to one of the better reviews I read. Anyone have any experience with these? happy shooting, dv
  6. I've only been shooting USPSA since May, but here is my go to load based on a local production Master's recommendation: -Glock G17 stock -3.6 gr Clays (he says he only needs 3.3 in a G34 to reach minor) -124 gr PD JHP -Federal #100 primers -Range brass (but tested in WIN) -1.135" COL Average 1030 fps (83 degrees, 67% humidity, SE WI) = 127.7 PF Off-hand groups at 15 yards = average of 3" Measures ok in Lee Perfect Powder Measure. Measures well in the Lee Auto Disk Pro Powder Measure. happy shooting, dv
  7. For better or worse I'm getting ready to set up my Mossberg 500 as an entry-level 3-gun shotgun. I'm 5'6", 142 lbs, athletic. Pretty much every sporting gun on the market is made too big for me. Can I get a gunsmith who sets up shotguns for hunting set up my shotgun for the correct length of pull for 3-gun? Or is there another good method? I am not interested in a tactical adjustable stock at this time. Thanks and happy shooting, dv PS: I searched and found 352 posts, but none relevent. Any links to relevant threads are appreciated.
  8. For dry fire I've been pretty happy with IPSC Shot Timer (Beta) for my Android from the Play Store - free. Highly recommend learning to use and adjust it at home using dry fire, first, and then going to the range for live fire. My first live fire did not go well, but I was trying to learn to use it and drill at the same time. Dumb mistake. happy shooting, dv
  9. Where is Village Prairie? I have a lot of family and friends south of Topeka. Would like to get them involved in USPSA and/or IDPA. happy shooting, dv
  10. You bring up a good point. I thought bowhunters were friendly, and they are, but the action pistol folks I have met thus far have been even friendlier and more helpful. Happy shooting, dv
  11. Hey, Been lurking for awhile, but finally decided to join if for nothing more than figuring out which posts are new since my last visit. Thought I'd post here to see what my avatar looked like - preferred to post a pic of me with a warthog in South Africa, but didn't know if that violated the "no hunting" rules. So, a pic of post-Warrior Dash made it instead. Currently shooting a local USPSA-style weekly league, have shot only one USPSA match and observed one IDPA match. Really looking to improve pistol handling skills using "normal" equipment at this point; G17, Uncle Mike's kydex holster and mag pouches. I have a tendency to "go in deep" in hobbies and I'm trying to make this one hobby that I don't do that on. happy shooting, dv
