  1. Eric is a really awesome guy. I don't follow shooting sports whatsoever, but I sent him an email asking if he had any of his grips with him for sale while he was in Las Vegas (I live here). He emailed me back right away and invited me over to his hotel to come check out all his products. He was great to talk to and had really high quality products for my future Tanfog. Once I actually get the gun in hand, I'll be ordering right away.

  2. No, definitely not going to try to CCW that baby. Might get a CZ PCR or a Kahr for that. I know it's kind of an ignorant knee-jerk reaction, but over the past couple of days I've read a couple of stories in the newspaper about criminals (a pawn shop robber and a home invader) who were shot by carrying would-be victims (BRAVO!) but who were able to flee alive. I'm ashamed to say, but the first thing that jumps to my mind is the caliber they were shot with, not necessarily the placement. Can you guys think of a scenario (or shot) in which the 9mm might have fallen short while a .40 cal would have been enough to permanently incapacitate the perps?

  3. Oh, I agree that glocks are great defensive guns, but I just don't love them. They have no soul or style. I want to love and take pride in my personal side arm, and I figure there has to be an auto loader reliable enough to depend on as much as flocks -- I'm hoping the Stock 3 is just the gun I'm looking for. So for everyone suggesting 9mm, should I not be concerned with the less reliable expansion of non to shelf ammo

  4. So I'm definitely sure I'll be getting a Stock 3 whenever they arrive, but I've been tossing and turning something fierce trying to decide between which caliber to get: 9mm or .40 cal. The gun will be primarily for home defense and range time (to practice proficiency, not for competition). I've done nothing but read as many threads and watch as many videos discussing the pros and cons of each, but I'd love if you Tanfog gurus would help me decide considering some different factors:

    1. Ammo commonality vs Ammo flexibility

I currently own a Ruger 10/22 Target (.22lr), Glock 17 (9mm), HK USP (.45 ACP), and a Ruger GP100 (.357). I would say the gun I feel most comfortable grabbing for home defense would be my Glock, because I shoot it the best and it has a whole 5 more rounds in it if I had to defense myself against multiple home invaders. Part of me would like to keep ammo commonality with my Glock (as a main weapon/back up weapon combo), but another part of me values having a gun in all of the most common calibers (of which .40 cal is currently my missing link). What say you?

    2. Increased capacity vs. Increased power

Without starting a huge battle between the caliber camps, it seems like the consensus is: A) .40 leaves a bigger hole and has better penetration, thus making it just slightly better than the 9mm in a defensive situation -- negligible if using top 9mm loads B) 9mm weapons have a bit more capacity and less recoil, making it slightly easier to use in a defensive situation -- negligible if one practices proficiency with the .40 cal. I will say that I would like the weapon to reliably carry 15+1 without a super huge competition base pad sticking out of the bottom. Is this possible with a .40 cal Tanfog? (And as a side note, is there a capacity difference between large frame and small frame Tanfogs of the same caliber?)

    3. Cheaper range ammo vs. More reliable defense ammo

So the maxim is that 9mm is a great defensive caliber because one can afford more practice, thus becoming better trained with the weapon. That's true, and practice makes perfect. However, from what I've read, only the top end 9mm loads (name brand JHP in +p+ or +p) reliably perform to standards approaching the potency of the .40 cal. So is practicing with round nose standard loads really going to help you if you're running said top shelf ammo for defense? My logic tells me that practicing with one load and relying on another for defense is anathema to preparedness for a gunfight.

And although more expensive to practice with, top .40 cal loads are equal in price (and sometimes even cheaper) than top 9mm loads. If push comes to shove, I've read that the expansion and penetration of the .40 cal is much less ammo dependent than the 9mm. Therefore if for whatever reason you had to rely on cheap, scavenged ammo for defense, the .40 cal will inherently provide you with more consistent high performance than non top shelf 9mm ammo. But this inherent difference in platforms dovetails into my next consideration...

    4. Decreased gun wear vs. High energy performance

The energy of the .40 cal is unquestionably greater than the 9mm. Granted modern bullet design closes the gap between 9mm and .40 in soft targets (people), the .40 has more power to blast through obstructions shielding the soft target, such as heavy clothing, buttons, glass, wood, brush, etc. This increased energy really gives me confidence in the .40's capabilities. I understand it's all about shot placement, but who knows what type of objects the bad guy could have stuffed in his jacket pockets.

However, this comes at a cost. As I understand it, Mr. Newton says that for every action there is an opposite but equal reaction -- hotter shooting guns are subject to increased wear, tear and damage (as demonstrated by .40 cal and 10mm Witnesses). Would the wear rate of a .40 be that much greater than a 9mm? And is the increased wear rate a fair trade off for the increased performance potential of the high energy .40 cal? I fully intend for the Stock 3 to be my grail gun; my pride and joy. With that being said, I want it to last until I'm an old man with a walker.

Thanks in advance for your perspectives. I hope I don't sound like a total neurotic newb, but I want this caliber discussion to go deeper than "cheaper ammo, more practice" and "if you can't finish it in 12 rounds you have bigger problems," LOL! Cheers all!

  5. A little update on what I've been told so far about the Stock 3's. They are on their way over here and should start getting into people's hands mid October. They are also large frame, and are blued not the nickel Special finish. They've also been added to the USPSA Production list so they'll be ready to rock as soon as they get here.

Hi Jordan -- are you sure they're all going to be large frame? That's actually kind of cool because I was hoping to get a .40, but the small frame .40 capacity is a little underwhelming. I asked Jim Bodkins to set one aside for me when they come in, but I haven't heard any update since.

  6. Interesting read. Seems like modding the mags to increase capacity is a very touch and go project. I hope I even possess the finesse for such a job. How is the reliability? And as I'm reading it, that's 16 rounds in a small frame mag with an extended base pad? What has the max been with the stock basepad?

I don't know if i'm not looking hard enough, but I haven't actually seen pictures of a Match or a Stock with anything but the stock base pad. Anyone have any pics?

  7. So what's the highest capacity you can reliably modify a .40 magazine for a small frame? Hennings magazine pads look like they are just what the doctor ordered, but does anyone have pics of how far they stick out from the mag well? I'd like to retain as stock a look as possible but have more than the 12+1 capacity from the factory mags.

  8. Those 19 round mags will fit in your gun. But guess what? They are longer than your 17 round mags (they are a 17 round mag with a +2 extension).

To get more capacity you need more room.

I have a used small frame mag extension if you change your mind....

Thanks for the reply! So the Mec-Gar magazines for the CZ 75 work with the Tanfoglio small frames? Do you happen to have a picture of a 19rd mag (preferably the Mec-Gar) in a Tanfog?

  9. Hi all, I just have some quick questions about magazine compatibility among Tanfoglios.

    1. Am I correct to assume that the Witness, Stock, Match, Limited, etc. of the same caliber all use the same magazines -- either the small frame or large frame magazine?

    2. Is there any setup or way to increase the magazine capacity of a small frame 9mm magazine while retaining the stock look or base pad? I know that Henning has an increased capacity 9mm small frame magazine, but I'd hate to let that low hanging magazine pad destroy the look of the gun.

Thanks in advance! Sounds crazy, but 17 rounds is too few for me, especially considering CZ-75s come with those sweet 19 round Mec-Gar mags.

  10. LOL, although nice, the red dot is going a little too out there for me -- I want to retain the sexy look and profile from the factory. But I like where your heads at! I'm sure there are lots of ways to do it big since I don't have to worry about any shooting league rules.

Thanks for all the suggestions, they sound like they will certainly lighten and smooth the trigger pull. I plan on playing around with the recoil spring to find what feels best to me. I've read there are trade offs between light and heavy recoil springs, so I'm sure recoil springs are a personal preference. Generally speaking though, if I was deciding between two springs, would the lighter or heavier spring err on the side of reliability?

As far as the various other springs and pins Henning offers, which ones should I be looking at? I don't like the idea of a cheapie roll pin anywhere a solid pin might be installed. What pins should I inquire about changing out when I order with Jim?

  11. Hey Skydiver: My definition of range fun is definitely on plinking and bullseye, I guess -- the gun I'm looking at getting won't need to stay within any official shooting organization criteria. With that limitless horizon in mind, what parts can you think of off the top of your heads that might help it become more fun to shoot (i.e. nicer trigger pull, faster on target, nicer sights, higher reliability, etc)?

JorDanO: I will probably give Jim a call or e-mail him and ask him about some customization, but I don't want to sound like a complete airhead when I'm talking to him. I'm just trying to get some ideas via all your guys' awesome knowledge so at least I know in what general direction I might want to go in terms of all the various springs, pins and other myriad goodies that are available for the platform.

Great replies and community you guys have here -- hopefully all these answers will help me and anyone else who might stumble upon this thread int he future who are in the same boat that I'm in!

  12. Thanks so much for everyone's replies -- they definitely pushed me over the edge of certainty and I'll be ordering my Stock 3 ASAP!

JorDanO: Ordering from Jim Bodkin sounds great, especially since I can kill two bird with one stone by tuning it when I buy it. What Hennings products do you think I should have Jim install? Like I said, I'm very new to Tanfoglios and am not quite sure what the pros and cons are of Hennings parts. I'm no competitive shooter, so I'm more interested in making it the most reliable sweet shooter possible.

One thing that I'm sure I want is a delta hammer, though. Not only do I love the way they look, but I've read a shooter from either the Philippines or Australia say that he really digs his set up of the stock recoil spring with the delta hammer. Are these hammers available through Jim? If not, does anyone know where I might be able to order one?

    Thanks again for any replies!

  13. Hi All,

I'm new to Tanfoglios and have been trying to read as much as possible about the different models. I absolutely love the lines and proportions of Tanfog designs and think that the Stock 3 is the sexiest gun I've ever seen. I've read that IFG will be importing them within the next couple of months, and am anxiously awaiting when they hit the market. But I have a few questions about it:

    1. How many rounds do the factory magazines fit in 9mm?

    2. Are the Stock magazines interchangeable with the Witness Elite Match series? (As a side question, how many rounds do the Mec-Gar magazines hold for the Witness Elite Match 9mm?)

    3. What is the reliability record of the Stock series?

    4. I've read of Witness frames and slides cracking -- do the Stock guns have a history of cracking as well?

    5. I've also read that the Witness series has a steep feed ramp and I've read of cases where hollow points can be iffy -- is the feed ramp as steep in the Stock series? I plan on relying a Stock 3 for range fun AND for home defense (and possibly CCW in the winter), so reliable feeding of hollow points is an absolute necessity. Would it be beneficial to get the feed ramp coated with Robar NP3, or will adding that very thin layer of coating exacerbate feeding problems?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if the questions seem so newbie or obnoxious. I just can't stop thinking about getting my hands on a Stock 3 and don't want to keep indulging in my dirty thoughts if there are reliability/design issues that might pop up if my life depended on it.
