  1. Depending on what you’re loading UniqueTek may have the answer for you in their specialty powder funnels for Dillon powder measures. I have the one made for loading .358 coated bullets in 9mm (for my 929) and their one for 38 double ended wadcutters (they also have one HBWC) in 38 Specials.  You can also get one for coated 45 ACP.  It makes the powder measure into a M die.

  2. Apologies to all for creating a zombie thread but after a lot of searching for data for 38 Mid Colt load I kept coming back to this thread and not finding exactly what I wanted I decided to post my results to this thread so others searching for the same info can find it here.

    Here you go:

    Colt Python, 4.25" barrel

Starline 38 Special brass cut to 0.900"

    160 grain Blue Bullets

Sport Pistol 3.50 grains (average of 10 throws on Dillon 550B)

    OAL 1.330"

    Fed 100 SPP

  3. Brad, My loads are similar to yours except I increased it to 2.9 grains, from 2.8, to give me a little more cushion at matches with a standard chronograph. I do have 147 grain Blue Bullets (0.358”) coming to experiment with to see if there is any advantage to the lighter weight (also want to try Alaskan454’s TiteGroup load with that bullet along with Sport Pistol).

  4. I had a match director point out to me that my 625 moon clip holder’s stud didn’t protrude and wasn’t legal. I checked the rules and it states that requirement “…and a stud that protrudes through the center of the clip”.  I modified the holder so that there is now a stud that protrudes.  Here are before and after pictures. The post just needs to protrude, but I made sure it REALLY protruded.  YMMV with your match directors.

  5. Having a stud in the moon clip holder that protrudes through the clip is problematic.  Here are the rules:

8.6.3 Speed Loader and Moon Clip Carrier Rules
8.6.3.1 Be suitable for concealed carry and all day continuous wear.
8.6.3.2 Speed loader carriers must either be of open top configuration and must retain the speed loader by tension or
retain the speed loader with a snap or Velcro closure. Moon clip carriers must either be of open top configuration, and must retain the moon clip by tension and a stud that protrudes through the center of the clip, or retains the moon clip with a snap or Velcro closure.
8.6.3.3 Moon clips may not be retained in the carrier by 3 or less cartridges.
8.6.3.4 The same exact location for speed loaders, speed loader pouches, moon clips, moon clip pouches, and/or
ammunition feeding devices in pockets must be used for every stage in a single match, unless otherwise specified in a stage description.

Instructions say "Draw and fire 4 shots to the body and one shot to the head freestyle."

It doesn't say "Draw and fire 4 shots to the body then one shot to the head freestyle."

As such, barring some sort of announcement from IDPA HQ adding a procedural rule to the classifier, you can shoot it in whatever order you like.

I’m going to have to remember this!

  7. If you reload on the move there’s really isn’t much difference in reload speed. I definitely have had better 5x5 classifier times with SSR (38 Special) than shooting ESR (625).  Also using my SSR (Colt 38) in Classic in the ICORE postal match last year and the 625 in L-6 the 38 definitely did MUCH better (same course of fire and a lot of reloading so it was a great comparison).

But that’s just me and I’m not all that good.

  8. Brownells currently has Federal magnum small pistol primers. $100/thousand with a limit of two. Plus all the fees and shipping.

  9. ABBA Fan (love that name), here is some info that might help from my 625JM 4" that is very, very similar to yours (except the tumbling bullets). Last year I fired a squib load (Blue Bullet) that got lodged in the barrel. The base of the bullet was just inside the barrel and I had to thump it out with a rod. That bullet (seen in the pictures) measures 0.450". I also was able to push SNS coated bullets (0.452") with minimal pressure into the cylinder chambers from the front. I'm going to guess that the chamber throats are 0.452" diameter.  All of which is probably as it should be.

  10. What are the throats of the chambers in your cylinder? If they’re skinny it might be sizing the bullets too small before the get to the forcing cone and the barrel.

You can see if the bullets drop through the cylinder chamber or if they get “squeezed”
