    Ammo Test

Yes I did another 50 Rds. I did chrono and accuracy comparison to Speer Lawman. The reloads shot slightly slower but not as consistantly accurate as the Lawman. Not sure what to do to improve consistancy and accuracy. Going to try another 100 rds. just to better understand whats going on. The Kimber seems to like them better than the XD.

    Ammo Test

I bumped it .up to 5.2 grains which is the start load in the Speer manual tested 100 Rds. and accuracy improved and low shots went away.I suppose I'll try another batch to get a better idea and go from there. My guns did'nt seem to like the lighter loads. The quest has officially begun

MRDON, really no way to determine what velocity You will get with Your gun - you'll have to test it yourself - try shooting it about 12 feet away from the chrono. To determine accuracy, depends on what you're doing with the gun - I like to try about 20 yards - but some like 15, 25 or 50 yards. By adjusting OAL, powder and powder charges, and bullets, you should be able to eventually find a load that is a lot more accurate and easier to shoot than factory loads - save some money, too. Took my new Pro Chrono to the range today in 101 Temp.to test the aforementioned load.I compared my load to factory Magtek and UMC in same bullet and weight. Shooting a 5 inch XD. 8 shot strings each. My load average was 746 fps, Magtek 831 and UMC 834. I also compared accuracy at 40' freehand and my loads seemed low and not as consistant as the other 2. Granted it wasn't from a rest but I tend to think the results were fairly reliable.Could I be messing something up or should I try another 100 Rds to get a better feel for how the're performing? Any thoughts on all this?
  4. Hello and welcome.Late reply here sorry. I also just set up a 650 and trying to learn from all the good experience in this forum. So far a lot of help with my newbie questions. Loading 45 ACP.

    Ammo Test

Happy 4th to all.I have settled on a 45 230 Gr. TMJ load that cycles good and seems to shoot and eject OK. I ordered a Chrono and want see what its doing compared with a couple of different factory loads. I went with the Speer manual but started at 4.9 of BE instead of 5.2 it reccomended which listed as 779 FPS. My OAL of 1.260 is as reccomended.Any ideas what I should be looking for in FPS? I'm new at all this and am trying to get a handle on it so any schooling on this would be appreciated. Also at what distance should I be shooting to determine bullet accuracy? Shooting Xd 5" and Kimber 41/2"

    High Primers

I'm starting to think it's operator error.I noticed the handle was jamming up against the cartridge bin.I had the bin pushed too far to the front. Duh. That and trying to pay attention to too many things at once. I did check everything you guys suggested.I'm thinking time and practice will work it out. Thanks for jumping in to help.

    High Primers

+1. Your oal fluctuation is within normal expectations. As for the high primers I have no issues on my 650 in 9mm. The brass may have crimped pockets. See if your high primers are all in the same headstamp brass. If so that rules the press out. Case brands vary and I'm using large primers.Youngeyes I can't see anything unusual about the primer pockets. Guess I'll call Dillon tomorrow. Going to order some new brass soon and see if there is an improvement.
  8. I ran my first 100 consecutive rounds and about 10 of them had slightly high primers. Sitting them on a flat surface they were high in the center.Im using a 650 and making sure to push all the way up and down on the handle. The other thing is after setting OAL at 1.259 it varies from 1.257 to 1.261.I'm thinking thats probably acceptable but is it a normal occurance? Loading Precision 230 Gr.FMJ and used cases. Just trying to work the bugs out.I would really like to be able to run a thousand rounds without worrying about out of spec. issues.I'm new so don't know whats normal or not on this machine.
  9. I'm loading 45 Acp, precision 230 grain FMJ. I just spent several hours assembling and setting up the dies on my new 650. I adjusted the crimp per instruction book and tried to use what I have read here and elsewhere to get it correct. At first I was trying to set it at.471 using calipers and a visual inspection. I ran a few dummy rounds and then hand cycled them through my 2 pistols and noticed the bullets had pushed back into the cases.I called dillon and the guy said that was a pretty impossible way to do it and suggested setting the die on an empty case and then lowering 1/4 turn. I did this and then tried to push the bullet into the case and it seems to be tight but visually not over crimped. How do you experienced reloaders know when it is "just right"? By the way I'm loading 4.9 grains Bullseye at 1.260 OAL.
  10. When you say start in Mid Range do you mean mid range Lyman, mid range Speer or midrange between the two of them. I forgot to say I shoot 4" Kimber 1911 and 5" XD Tactical. Fslim has some good advice. Where are you located? I am in the twin cities and the reason I ask is that if there is an experience reloaded around you willing to help some time with him will be invaluable. If you are around me then we can certainly sit something up to go through the plunk test and get some loads worked up and tested. To answer your specific question the lower mid range is a decent place to start. With a 4" you will find different results then me but my 185 load should still run your gun just fine. I did talk to an experienced local reloader yesterday who reloads 45 and uses Bullseye who suggested starting at 4.6 to 4.9. Thanks for the offer Retread but I'm a little south of you in NC

  12. Thanks sofar but I'm really stumped on the correct Bullseye load.
  13. Started looking at this forum 3 years ago when I first started researching Dillon reloaders. Finally bought a 650 from Brian and already have a question."Reloading 45ACP". Hope to learn from you all.
  14. Hello to all.New reloader here. I'm setting up my new 650 to start reloading 45 ACP.I bought Federal large primers, Bullseye powder and will use tumbled fired brass.Loading Precision 230 Grain FMJ Round nose. I bought the Lyman and Speer manuals.{Lyman 1.275" OAl,Starting 3.8GR., Max. 5.3Gr.} {Speer 1.26 OAL starting 5.2Gr., Max. 6.3Gr.} That seems like a big difference. Checking 3 brands of FMJ factory ammo that runs good in both pistols the OAL's are 1.254--1.256 and 1.261. I'm shooting target and just want it to shoot straight and cycle like the cheap factory stuff I normally buy. For now. Where should I start?
