Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. This is my first try at loading. I've loaded 10 rounds and weighed them. I used 230 grain bullets, 4.5 grains powder, 45ACP Winchester brass. They weigh: 322.6 323.3 323.4 324.3 324.4 324.7 324.7 326.3 326.5 327.9 That's a pretty big spread - 5.3 grains. I weighed 10 of the bullets separately and got about a 0.8 grain difference between the lightest and heaviest (Ranier bullets.) So what should I do here? I'm definitely going to pull the bullet from the 327.9 and check that. Thanks! CoryB
  2. I just got my XL650 set up and produced my first handloads. I'm using: Ranier 230Gr plated RN bullets 4.5 grains of W231 powder Federal Large Pistol primers in Winchester cases. OAL is 1.275 and they pass the plop test in both the Dillon chamber checker and the chamber of my Springfield 1911. So how does this load sound? The Hodgdon site shows 4.3 gr minimum and 5.3 max so I figured I'd start at the low end. Interestingly, my Lyman manual shows 5.2 and 5.8 gr for a total metal jacket bullet. The Sierra manual doesn't have anything listed for lead bullets (which Ranier says to use for load data.) Any advice or observations would be appreciated. I'll be testing them tomorrow.
