  1. My out-of-town daughter made a surprise visit recently.

I got my evening out with her and made a spur of the moment suggestion. "Want to go to the range with me?"

"YEAH!", first surprise of the day - she has professed more than once that she "doesn't like guns".

When we got to the range I asked the RO's if they would take a few minutes and give her "the talk", this was her first time with any gun let alone a handgun. That conversation covered, we proceeded to our lane where they spent a little more time in indoctrination.

We loaded up the .22 auto and she proceeded to drop 10 rounds into the X ring on a standard 7-yard silhouette. Loaded 10 more, and did it again. Then on her own, she pushed that target out to 7 yards and with a few fliers put 20 more down range all but the fliers in the X or 9.

Big grin and the light went on. She even tried my revolver but between the trigger and mass it was not as much fun.

She made a point of telling me that she gave herself a CCW class for her birthday. She doesn't know it yet, but Dad will be helping out when she decides to purchase her first carry weapon.

A little daddy/daughter time and I'm beaming. It seems we have another interest to share.

  2. I went to an advanced free screening of this last winter and I like I overpaid. If you are into bizarre, dark and depressing, this one's got it in over abundance.

I've had bouts of SADS that were more tolerable than the time we wasted watching this. The highpoint of the film was seeing whatserface in the all together, and that was about it. My "date" apologized for suggesting it...

  3. Nice stuff in .45 behind a 185 HP, fairly clean, minimal flash, soft shooter. .38/125 JHP, not so much - moderate load had me thinking I'd slipped a .357 Mag in there. Huge flash, lots of muzzle blast - wasn't what I was looking for with .38 hand loads.

  4. Tar,

In my line of work, folks may know so much there's the temptation at times to think we know it all. The reality is that the more I learn, the less I realize I know.

When I get in to a corner I can't find my way out of on my own, I frequently find the solution to the problem as I talk it out with someone else.

Similar experience here on the forums. Sometimes it is just finding an ear, a little exchange, and I find the answer talking it out. Even if I don't, I get acquainted with other members, learn something new.

    Win/Win

Thanks for joining the conversation, Tar, co-exprs, benny hill, Hi-Power Jack, DHill, and RiggerJJ.

  5. The butt plate ends up pretty high on my shoulder rather than in the pocket. I just added the enhanced butt pad, should soften the impact a bit but the final solution may be to go with a A1/A2 or similar setup. More LOP, and the longer buffer system.

That said, I am embarrassed after a great deal of mental replay to admit I know what's up.

    Two words.

    Brass Catcher.

I couldn't fathom how I felt the recoil impulse and then the muzzle moved right. The energy transfer when the case was ejected and hit the bag, then weight of the brass hitting the bag makes it swing. With a half-dozen or more hulls in the bag I ended up with a bit of massy brass flapping back and forth over there.

    Duh.

But I appreciate the help/advice and probably now a bit of muttering under one's breath. No worries, I did!

  6. If you want a soft gun, never use a carbine length gas system. There is a reason most top shooters use a rifle length system w/ a good comp.

It's like I said, I have to do it all myself, lol. No experience with AR's to base this on, I'm working against a lot of "is this normal?".

I'm planning on moving to a rifle setup, especially after realizing the pull on a carbine is too short by inches. If that will give me the "Cadillac ride" on top of better ergos, kewl.

  7. Jack,

As far as I am aware, firing from level with no cant.

Maybe what I am feeling as impact is the buffer bottoming out in the buffer tube. Inspecting the buffer, I don't see evidence of of it; no scuffing, etc. But a stripe of grease pencil on the bumper will clear up that question next trip. The sensation is like someone hitting me on the collar bone with a small hammer.

I suppose the movement might even be reflexive, like getting tapped on the knee/knee jerk due to that tap on the collar bone. It seems delayed but that observation is clouded by the time that has passed since that range session.

It was one of those "that's really strange, what am I doing wrong?" moments. Being aware of it didn't change the reaction on following shots.

Edit> Position was standing/freehand, no added support, no sling.

  8. I built up an AR15 sorta M4 have to do things myself but lessons were learned so I'm good with the costs. DPMS Oracle carbine upper 1-9/DPMS-built, RRA LAR15 lower. A little daylight between upper and lower, but no movement at all (lucked out there), DPMS guts and no complaints about the trigger. Magpul CTS stock fully extended, good cheek weld I think but I'm taller and this thing is tiny!

I was shooting American Eagle 55Gr FMJ.

First shots at the range I noticed that recoil/muzzle rise is minimal but with painful mechanical impact and an odd thing is happening. I have virtually no barrel rise, but a movement to the right no matter what I do. It is pretty obvious and I'm uncertain what causes it.

    Hold?

Flash hider/muzzle brake clocking slightly off? A4-pattern hider.

Is the impact normal or do I need to look into making changes? Right now I'm running a standard carbine buffer and spring, all mil-spec.

    Fun!

  9. Many never spoke of their role in that war. My pop, for example. It was only after he passed and I inherited his service ribbons that I learned of some of what he participated in.

I learned about the "Dirty Dottie" and another less polite nickname for the ship he served on.

I learned that he shared a smoke on deck with Earnest Hemingway before they dropped off the then-correspondent for Colliers Magazine @ Omaha Beach. Hemingway was one of his life-long idols.

I learned from one of the few experiences he shared with us of how a shipmate of his, Highpockets Daschle, tot his nickname. I learned with my meager research that Highpockets is mentioned in the book "D-Day" by Steven Ambrose.

My brush with history, our greatest loss, the greatest generation for sure.

My thanks to all who served, and all who will serve. Our thanks for their personal sacrifices can never be repaid but we should be making a greater effort for without them our nation would surely have perished long ago.

  10. I picked up a Stack-On bench but didn't pay the "reloading bench" premium and got an extra drawer for my trouble.

Good enough for now and it will do other duty in the future. I set up my RockChucker on the end vs the front to use the width of the bench for stability and it has worked well but I'm not full-length resizing rifle cases at this point.

Sometimes shopping at the BORG pays off. $199 regular price.

  11. HARP refi, with an ex-wife holding interest in the picture. But given the fact that the house is nearly 30k underwater, she's willing to walk.

I've complied with everything the title company has asked for. We're down to the wire, have to close next week or the whole deal turns into a 100% do-over.

They asked for "a letter from us that states we both agree to the refi", notarized so it takes extra time and further antagonizes my ex-wife with whom I am on very thin ice over this, of course. Next thing I get is a note that says "your ex-wife has to sign the letter too". Umm, what do they think that other signature, notarized is on the letter I provided. You know the one that says "We, the undersigned, <my name>, <her current legal name> A/N/A <her former married name>... blah, blah, blah.

I'm tired of wasting time with folks who don't read let alone charged me for a quit-claim that wasn't worded correctly for the state I live in and had to be rewritten. With the time scale I'm under, I had to return that to them overnight, at my own expense too.

Truthfully, I'm ready to hang the whole thing up and start over with a different mortgagor. Even though it is not their fault. Just on principle. Because I can.

  12. Ruger MkII/III are safe to dry fire. The firing pin has a cross-pin that limits forward travel. Manual says dry firing is permissible.

    That's the good news.

Bad news is that the cross-pin can fail and it is buried in the bolt making it impossible to do a quick inspection during a field-strip. The only way to know for sure is to perform a periodic tear-down/inspection of the bolt and firing pin.

  13. Yessir, not a single complaint with Amazon.

I finally managed to get my new phone activated yesterday after "only" a week and it was due to the efforts of Amazon. Verizon? No help at all on the other hand.

    Happy Tuesday!

  14. After a trying week, this is my commentary on the day. Yeah, I posted it my FB status, but what can I say? I were inspired, at least to the level that I get inspired. Had to share it elsewhere.

a bad case of Facebook Deficit Disorder.

I'm going to post a lot in this status, stay with me, I'll try to make it worth it...

    1. The weather.

Beautiful evening. It's one of those driving around after sunset, singing to the tune on the radio at the top of your lungs, with ALL the windows rolled down. Yeeeaaahhhhh. Wish I could sing. <sigh>

    2. To err is human.

I'm all for forgiving the accident. But. All it takes to truly f something up is a Verizon Wireless Store employee and a computer. I went in with a new phone activation issue, I left without even my current phone working. DubyaTeeEff. Verizon Customer Service got my phone back on it's feet at least.

    3. To forgive is divine, or at least lucrative as hell.

Part of the "journey" (sheesh, just call it a s**tstorm and get on with it, Jim) was also working with Amazon Wireless to sort out WHY my phone couldn't be activated. Unlike VZ, they tried - hard and found out that there's an outstanding order to disable my current number on 8/19.

Yep VZ strikes again. Unlike VZ who will probably pitch a hissy when I demand that they waive my activation fee to compensate me for this fiasco, Amazon gave me $30 in promotional cash to buy any thing my little heart desires from Amazon, just because. Kudos to Amazon, they couldn't work around VZ's screw up, but the certainly took a little sting out of it.

    4. Last minute changes in your weekend, not always bad.

Need to spend a second weekend in a row with Mister Junior, at the last minute. Considering how long I lived where I couldn't spend ANY time with him. I'm calling this a win. There's that pony...

Life is good, keep your sense of humor, call BS when appropriate. Don't worry, be happy. (still working on that last one...)

  15. I'm in the process of dealing with the last of the leftovers from a divorce, the tale of which would be a novella over in that opposite forum if I really wanted to rehash. One of my final tasks is to refinance the home we couldn't sell due to the market. HAMP to the "rescue"...

I got absurdly expensive hazard insurance quotes from several of the majors, at least the ones that would touch me. Most of them wouldn't even bother to quote unless I am already carrying another homeowner's policy. How you manage to do that for a rental is beyond me.

As a last resort, I followed the advice of a friend and called American Family. What a breath of fresh air. I'm converting all of my insurance products. My renter's policy was half the cost of my current with better coverage, my auto only slightly higher than current but worth it when I consider the total package and it too has added coverage features. The biggie, hazard insurance with a bit of liability coverage tossed in. 1/3 the best prior quotes.

Yes, I said 1/3 - HUGE DIFFERENCE. That's a lifesaver in the scheme of things.

My monthly house payment was already going down by a considerable amount just due to the change in interest, this "find" is the game-changer.

Thanks, my friend for listening to me complain and offering stellar advice and thank you American Family!
