  1. Looks like i will be going with the 9mm major. I have quite a bit of vv-n320, is there a load combination for this powder that will work and meet power factor ?

As already posted, N320 is a no-go for 9mm major.

All those posted just above will work fine and HS-6 just happens to be available at Powder Valley right now. ;)

  2. I have a glock 35 but the glock 24 has a .7" longer barrel and slide. There's replacement barrels that are 9" for the glock. Wouldn't that mean less recoil and more fps

I don't think it'll buy you anything if you just stick a 9" barrel in the 6" slide - your sight radius will be the same. The increased sight radius is the main benefit in the 6" guns IMO. Too much length/weight out front and the transitions will suffer. Recoil is already negligible in a 24 with the right powder combo.

  3. It was told to me by Beven that although sometimes an STI 9mm/38 super mag may run reliably for some with 9mm ammo, the STI 9mm/38 super tubes are just not designed to run reliably with 9mm ammo, without a spacer that is. The location of the front control rib is what makes the problem appear. The top of the case could get stuck along the rear beveled edge of the front control rib as the rounds are feeding up through the mag. The spacer moves the rounds forward enough so as this does not happen, keeps the side of the case on the "high" side of the front control rib inside the tube.

I know, there are some to many, as listed above, that have had no problems without spacers, just passing along what the mag master explained to me.

I'm sure he knows more than most about it but it seems a long round would overcome that. I guess I'll get my hands on a mag or two and try it out.

I didn't for me. It's the case length not the OAL that is the issue. They would start jamming side by side instead of stacking if the case mouth didn't reach the second rib in my case. The full width rib like SVI or MBX alleviates that issue - at a cost.

  4. I've had good experiences with both, but I prefer the coated bullets. Cheaper and as mentioned above a little more tolerant on crimping - keep it light still.

I've found the coated 180gr bullets with no lube groove give me just a bit tighter groups in my gun - I haven't seen them on the BBI page yet, but SNS & Bayou have them now and I imagine BBI will have some soon as well.

  5. I have never purchased from power valley, but I would have to assume they add shipping/hasmat fees to that. so then what is the final price? A lot also has to do with how long they have had that Varget, did they get it straight from Hodgdan or did they get it from a distributor. I think that prices may fall some but the guys sitting around waiting on " the good old days" are going to be disappointed.

Buying in quantity for online purchases is the way to go to offset shipping & hazmat.

Ex. Just bought 16lbs of HS6 (not really a big order) from Powder Valley and it came to around $20.80/lb with shipping/hazmat.

  6. Stick with either of the tried and true options that are out there.

Both have GOOD reputations in the industry.

OP asks opinion of product, if anyone saw it first hand.. You say they are junk, without any actual reason or evidence.. Real helpful.

I don't think he said anything about them being junk. That's your word. FWIW, I like the look of the checkering on the new CK grips. Anybody know how grippy it is compared to the others?

So why did he have to emphasize "GOOD reputations" in the reply if not to infer something???

Also, that post had zero to do with the OP's question.

  7. It's not too long. I load .40 major and minor to 1.135 for my Glocks, and I have no issues. I can load out to at least 1.140 without feeding issues.

Now, on your Wilson gage, it may be designed for 0.400 jacketed/plated bullets. The BB's run at least 0.401 in my experience, and maybe even 0.0005 more. Seems like a small amount, but it is enough to keep them from dropping down in a tight case gage. My EGW will not fully seat maybe 25% of my BB reloads, so I gage them upside down. Anything that does not seat upside down gets plunked in the chamber for a final test.

It irritates me that nearly all .40 S&W Chamber checkers are useless for most lead loads and loads that are a hair longer than Saami spec. The only lead loads that will work are the 155g LSWC and smaller.

Since I started to load for Major, I used a Mansor reamer to ream my Glock KKM barrel to load them longer and I reamed the EGW Chamber checker to match it. I doubt I would do that to the 50 round chamber checker since that is 100 doll hairs.

The shockbottle 40L 100rd checker will do those. ;)

  8. Yes. My gut still tells me the powder (or anything firearms related) shortages are no fault of manufactures, wholesalers or retailers. It is the quasi-prepper, OCD hoarders...period. The worst of them set up tables at flea markets and gun shows trying to off the stuff at laughable prices. Active and devoted shooters are left holding their wankers.

    You mean flippers? Hoarders/preppers don't sell. :)

  9. I have been watching for 3n38 for over a year. Powder Valley had some last week and it was gone before I could even add it to my cart.

They had some 3n38 today, I was hoping for 3n37 tho. :angry2:

Was able to get an 8lber of HS-6 to try for 9mm major - would have grabbed more if I had any previous experience with it.

  10. Yes, the Shockbottle 100-round case gauge (also sold as the 'Hundo') does not check OAL of loaded rounds per-se, but does check most overall dimensions. There were a few reasons for that-

-- OAL for various bullets and magazines is all over the map so what is max for one bullet & magazine will easily fit another and so on.

-- Having the brass stick out a bit when the gauge is on a table makes it easy to mark the bases without marking the gauge (grossly out-of-length rounds can be seen here too)

-- It makes poking marginal or stuck rounds out of the gauge easier.

-- lowers the cost & weight to you a bit.

-- insertion force is consistent and wear on the gauge lessened if you do the fill-n-lift.

But.. the gauges are reamed with SAAMI chamber reamers that cut the chamber leade as well-- that's the part that tapers down from bullet size to rifling ID, so ammo that won't fit a SAAMI chamber also won't fit the gauge (we use the smaller side of chamber tolerances). It's not the same as OAL, but load a bullet too long and it will not fit in the leade section (in fact, this is where the max OAL for various bullets often comes from; what will fit in the leade)

The 40L gauge is special in that we removed the leade section from the gauge, leaving the bullet bore straight to accommodate ammunition that is loaded longer than SAAMI spec into a firearm which has an extended chamber leade. It is up to the end-user to determine what fits safely in their particular firearm.

I am having issues with the 100 40L in that the SNS 200 grain .401 coated bullets will not fit. I can check by pulling them in backwards, but it is a pain. Any ideas.

    Jay

I'm using the 100 40L with SNS 180gr and not seeing any issues - .401 as well and loading to 1.185 OAL. There is the occasional round that won't seat easily in the gauge and those go in the practice/range bucket.

Possible your gauge is out of spec or maybe you're crimping too much or too little?

  11. It actually works great if you're willing to tinker with it a bit and are mechanically inclined or just get mikes reloading bench upgrades. I was lucky and mine primes like a champ out of the box.

mine used to... then things just started going down hill... no amount of messing with it seemed to improve anything, I admit I am not the best tinkerer. But at the end of the day it was inevitable that a Dillon would be on the horizon sooner or later,

Put about 10k rounds thru mine this year so far - not a huge number, but hopefully it'll keep chugging along.
