  1. Glad you got it running! I have an older 9 Pro that I had the slide lightened, and an RMR cut deep into the back. Once I installed the Carver Comp and KKM barrel, along with the Apex FSS trigger, I needed to play with the springs for use with factory rounds (minor). I have a full set of flat ISMI and round Wolff springs! Note for the Wolff spring set (recoil and striker), the included striker spring is standard power, I had to specifically order the reduced power Striker spring separately from Wolff.

  2. Are you running the Carver Comp with factory rounds? I am for 9 minor, and it took a bit of trial & error to get it right. The 11lb ismi flat spring is stronger than the 12lb wolff. I found the 12 Wolff would barely keep it in battery, which would cause the light strikes when on the move in a match. I switched to the 11 flat spring and it runs solid. Note in the M&P that the recoil and striker springs fight against each other, so a lighter Wolff reduced power striker spring would also help in your case, but try the flat recoil spring first.

  3. Just about complete with my open M&P 9 Pro

What kind of thumb rest is that?
Its from Speed Ledge LLC, the one I have is their first gen thumb rest. It mounts on the front rail, and fits in any of the 3 slots for adjustment.

The other parts are Carver comp on a KKM barrel, Apex FSS trigger kit, SSS Magwell, Springer Precision slide racker and mag bases, Trijicon RMR 07 with slide work done by DP Custom Works.

  4. The optic should be parallax-free, so you should be able to adjust the dot to co-witness with the irons, then still get accurate hits with the dot in the center of the window and well above the irons. Mine seems to work that way just fine (CORE & Deltapoint setup).

I am not talking parallax, but rather the type of cowitness which is based on how tall your iron sights are in relation to the optic. For a true cowitness, the irons appear in the middle of the optic. A popular option is lower-third, in which the irons are shorter, so the cowitness happens in the bottom of the optic window, giving less distraction. My pro-9 front sight is much shorter than the core front sight, also I do not have a rear sight as I use the base of the RMR, so my cowitness view happens extremely low in the optic window giving me no distractions.

  5. I dont have a Core, but I have my Trijicon milled into the slide of my 9 Pro. I kept the stock fiber front sight, which gives me a reference point to help find the dot quickly when firing around angles/corners in uspsa. I did not want to obscure the sight window by getting a taller front. I have a bottom 5% co-witness with my setup.

  6. Correct, the rail mount is detachable, and also available separately.

Should mount right on the core with the adapter. I have a 9-Pro, and used a SSS dovetail mount. I liked it so much I sent out my slide to have the RMR melted on, and the slide carved and lightened. I still need to post my dovetail mount to sell one day.

  7. Last year I bought both the DeltaPoint and the Trijicon RMR 07. I liked them both, very solid, will do the job well. I kept the RMR for a few reasons:

    - I liked the RMR adjustments better, clickable on the fly and easily accessible while mounted. I bounce between loads and configurations, and I can compensate easily during a match.

    - Even though the DP has a larger window, the usable space is about the same. I had the larger triangle DP, and the triangle distorts on the screen at the edges. The RMR dot is solid even at the extreme edges.

    - The RMR is more rugged and would easily survive a bump or fall. There is a video of someone using it as a hammer.

    - I liked the controls better on the RMR, the automatic mode was much faster to respond, and manual override to lock in any light level.

It was a tough choice to make, and you can't go wrong with either.

  8. Get a role of the 3M double-sided automotive tape. Depending on the look you want, either tape a compact basepad on top of your current basepad, or cut a plastic/rubber block and use that to extend the length of the magazine. I have done this with some 1911 mags after I added a magwell, and they hold up fine in competitions being dropped on the ground as well as cement floor.

  9. It wasnt until recently that there were optics able to handle the slide recoil. I first ran an inexpensive optic mounted on a frame-rail mount. It was too high for my tastes, which is most likely why you see many people mount the cmore on its side. I then picked up a dovetail mount to see if I liked having the mount on the slide. For me, it was much faster to pickup as it put the sight in the same plane as the rear sight. That led me to have my slide milled for the Trijicon RMR. Now, no matter which pistol i pick up, either the irons or optic are at the same aiming position. Note that I do not have a traditional 2011 open gun. Towards the end of this year, at my local clubs I am seeing from none to several open guns built on traditional production frames. Could be a trend, could be a fad. Both the RMR and DeltaPoint are warrantied to run fine mounted on the slide.

  10. I am running a comp in my 9Pro with factory ammo, which forced me to play with the springs to get it to run right.

The 11lb ismi is just a hair too strong as sometimes it wont lock back on an empty mag.

The 12lb wolff runs perfect, however if you ride the slide closed very slow, it will not lock-up if the barrel is pointed up. So, the 12lb wolff is a bit lighter than the 11lb ismi.

The 14lb wolff is a bit stronger than the 11lb ismi, as I will get a few stovepipes from not a full extraction.

The stock ismi 15lb will barely move after firing with the comp. I have a 13lb ismi in the mail and will test in a few days.

So, in order of strength, 12 wolff, 11 ismi, 14 wolff, 13 ismi, 15 ismi.

I have a polished kkm barrel, polished breach sides, and lightened pro slide. The wolff springs are on an uncaptured wolff rod, the ismi is on a carver captured rod.

  11. I doubt we'll see many more Sigs in IDPA. I do shoot my old alloy-framed 226 now and then but most people just don't want to bother with traditional double action.

I used to use my 226 that has the stamped-steel slide, I had the double-action hump reduced many years ago and that smoothed out the first shot, but last year I switched over to a striker pistol when my son took it over.

  12. I built mine from a Pro in 9mm. I have the Carver comp combo with the KKM barrel. The trigger I have the Apex FSS. For sight I went with the Trijicon RMR. I first mounted it on a SpeedShooterSpecialty dovetail mount, but I just recently had my slide lightened and the top milled to mount the RMR directly.

I also have a thumb rest from thespeedledge that mounts on the front rail, but I dont think they make it anymore. Still looking at a magwell, but with the contour of the M&P mags I dont know if it would help at all.

  13. As a person that used to shoot an M&P, then an XD-M, and now Tanfoglio's, I can say I got rid of mine due to a trip to buy a new 5" pro one day. Went to Sportsmans Warehouse to buy the M&P 5" Pro, handled an XD-M 5.25 and fell in love with how much better of a gun it was. With the M&P you just have to accept new sights and trigger right off the bat. With the XD-M, you can get away without needing either, but some trigger refinement would help. I had close to 10k rounds through my M&P40, but out of the box, the XD-M was the winner considering what I would have to do to get the M&P even close.

I didnt like the grip safety button, but what pushed me from the xdm to the m&p was the factory 15 round mags. Sights and trigger didnt matter to me as I was going to replace them no matter what I bought.

  14. I would love that many matches per month in my area!

Back to the Op, my reasons for building out my M&P as an open project are: I like the platform, i wanted a single pistol for uspsa/steel/idpa, easy to work on myself, mags that meet my state laws, lower overall cost that gives me enough performance to meet my skill level, lower frustration rate (it seems at my local matches the STIs seem to have one problem or another).

For problem areas, I havent gotten back into reloading yet, so the comp is a bit tempermental with factory 9mm. It does make a noticable difference in feel, so it is working. I am still playing with springs, right now I have to re-rack about twice per 200rounds, which is fine for my local matches.
