  1. Glad to see all the support for the 17. I have been trying to decide between the 17 and 34 for my next purchase. I decided on the 17 because of it's versatility, reliability, and functionality.

  2. Here is a link to the Mobile Group of Uspsa shooters. Good group of people and shoot 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month usually. This month I think they will be shooting the 31st because of the holidays.

In pensacola as far as I know nothing close. Used to be a range in cantonment no competition, but have not been over that way in a long time. Styx river shooting center on I-10 between Pensacola and Mobile. Just 100 yard rifle range and 20 yard pistol and a couple of skeet stations.

I live about 40 minutes from p-cola so if you have any other questions just let me know.

Thanks for posting the link! Do they do any multi gun matches?

  3. Been a forum member for a few months and never really said anything... 'bout time.

Well, hello, I'm Kurt and currently stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. I'm a Navy Corpsman (5yrs) with 2D MarDiv and been shooting competitively for a few years (when I can). I primarily shoot 3Gun and USPSA (production and limited) at local matches and plan on hitting up some major 3Gun events next year. I'm open to advice and help and don't mind criticism when its warranted. Hope to see some of you on the range.

Welcome to the forum! Looks like you joined on my birthday! Good shooting...

  4. I'm just getting into competitive shooting and am looking for a kadex type holster for my current 9mm handgun. I will be buying a glock 17 or 34 after I finish my AR 15 build, but I need something to work with now. I wanted a Blade Tec DOH, but I'm not sure it will fit my MP. Can anyone help with info? Thanks...

I carry my PT 111 in a Fobus paddle holster. I like it.

Thanks for the advice. I got a great deal on a Fobus at a local chain store. It works great! I was a little put off by paddle holsters because of a leather model that I used with an old Colt Lawman MK III. It never worked well. The Fobus is a completely different animal. It works great! Very functional!!!

  5. I don't know why you want to go full choke for 3 gun unless you are running shells from wally world that don't have much powder in them. I like to run MOD or IMP MOD for 3 gun. I use to run IMP CYL with #4 MAX load but I got tired of being beat up and not to many matches allow that size shot anymore as it tears stuff up.

Thanks for the info! I'm in the process of learning as much as I can about the sport? I had read that it was tough to knock down metal targets with anything less than full choke. I'll take your advice and shoot the 26" as is while I shop for a deal on a deer barrel for the 3".

  6. I'm currently 6' @ 250 at 51 years old. Two years ago I weighed 375lbs. I'd still like to get under 200. It takes complete focus on diet and exercise and a willingness to alter your program when things become stale. Keep a journal of your food intake and training. List everything and be honest! Eat 5-6 times per day, but eat small meals. Don't feed your body with empty calories! Eat fresh whenever possible. If you maintain focus, you will achieve your goals. Good luck!!

  7. I've got two 1100's that I'm setting up for 3 gun. One is a 12 ga 26" barrel w/ IC choke. The other is a 3" mag. I'm looking for a 21-24" barrel rem choke chambered in 2 3/4 that I can put a full choke on. If I keep the 26" bbl ,how much should I expect to pay to have it threaded for a rem choke? Also, at 26" should i put a full choke in it too? Thanks,

  8. You need to give us a feel for your target budget to get a good answer. The good news about the AR15 platform is that it is very modular - if the underlying rifle is solid, you can upgrade piecemeal as you accrue experience and cash. For a guy on a budget, I would suggest avoiding a fancy custom rifle right out of the gate. You can buy or build a perfectly serviceable plain vanilla 20" barreled AR15 A3 (flat top) rifle for as little as $600, take it out and win your local match if you do your part. I suggest you avoid the common M4 carbine style rifles out there (16" barrel, carbine gas system, short sight radius) as this is a sub-optimal base platform for 3-gun.

As funds allow, you can incorporate the following upgrades in this order:

    1) A good muzzle brake. For the money, the DPMS Miculek brake ($40) is the hands down winner. Others may be slightly better but a lot more expensive. You can install this easily yourself.

    2) A free float handguard. No need for any of the fancy tactical rail nonsense - just a plain old tube ($40-100) that free floats the barrel. This will let you rest the forend on walls without impacting long-range accuracy. You need special tools to install this, so you might want to have a gunsmith do so.

    3) A good match trigger. The JP is the best IMHO ($140). Fiddly to install, but very doable if you are OK with your hands and have access to basic tools.

After the above three modifications, everything else is frosting. You can spend a LOT more money, but the above will give you by far the biggest bang for your buck.

I have not touched on optics. Your choice here depends on which division you want to shoot. Cheapest is Tactical Limited, in which you can shoot competitively with iron sights. Later on, as budget permits, you can look at a red dot (still Tac Limited) or a magnified scope (Tac Scope or Open).

As for other minor accessories, you need:

    i) Magazines. Get several 30-round GI or PMAGs, a few 40 round C-Products mags (if you can find them) and maybe one more higher capacity mag (PMAG + Nordic extension = 48 rounds, or 2 x PMAGs + CCW coupler = 60 rounds).

ii) Mag pouches. Best value IMHO is the BladeTek molded unit with TekLok belt attachment ($20).

iii) Ammo. This will be a significant expenditure, so reload or buy in bulk. 55 grain FMJ will be quite adequate for 99% of applications.

Good luck and welcome to the 3-gun addiction :D

Outstanding post! I'm in the same situation as the OP. I'll be following your advice. One question: When you refer to the flat top AR15 are you talking about the stock Colt version?

  9. I just stumbled across your board while searching for information on combat shooting. I'm not a competitive shooter, although I am intrested in learning more about the sport. Most of my shooting has been done on property located more than an hour from my residence, which limits shooting to once per week. I'm looking for a local range where I can shoot more often. Looking forward to learning from y'all.
