Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thought I'd chime back in here. Based on the suggestions here, I highlighted the top two serrations on the front sight with a silver Sharpie, and the top edge of the rear sight. I think I like having the top edges of the sights stand out a bit (haven't ever seen this option commercially though and am wondering why). It blends in when sighting in on lighter colored targets (so it has the same picture as the plain black sights), but get to a darker background and those touched-up edges really pop out...exactly what I was hoping for. Of course with my luck, Wal-Mart will have had a sale on silver paint (or they'll just strip down the steel).
  2. Hmm, paint pens are a good idea, more obvious, and much easier than anything else I'd come up with. I think I'll try just hitting the top serration to see how that works. Meanwhile, maybe I should grab a can of red paint to bring along as the guys who set things up are all open shooters
  3. So my third match, they had some nice timed turning target, triggered by a wire attached to a popper. Of course, at one point, a shooter starts, manages to hit a no-shoot, then hits the wire at the attachment point on a popper. Wire goes flying, have to reshoot the stage. Next shooter is shooting rather wild, hits a few no shoots, gets some bad shots on targets, then misses the trigger popper...but manages to hit the wire and cut it. Wire goes flying, pull out the pliers to twist the wire together. Reshoots the stage and does much better. Next shooter comes up, and sure enough, nails the wire yet again. So 13 shooters, and 3 in a row manage to cut the wire with no one else having that issue.
  4. So I shot my third match ever this past weekend. I'm using an M&P I picked up used, and decided during the last match that I hated the cheap, uneven fiber optic that the previous owner had put on it, so I invested in a set of Sevigny Competition Sights. The results showed...the first stage, my accuracy dramatically improved from the previous match (speed, not so much, but I can't complain for having only put 6 rounds with the new sights before the match to make sure I'd installed them properly). So accuracy was great through the match until...my turn to be first on a stage with freshly painted black steel. I simply couldn't see the all-black front sight well enough to get the hits quickly on the steel. So overall, I love the sights, but would like to boost the contrast a bit, particularly on the top of the front sight. Does anyone offer an option where something like the top serration is a different, brighter color? I'm toying with the idea of trying to paint it myself to see how I like it.
  5. Thanks, was wandering by with similar questions...checking to see what the latest thinking and opinions were or if they'd changed over time.
  6. So after watching the last match of the year last year, and spending the winter shooting Bullseye, I made it out to the first local match of the year here. Unfortunately, I've been fighting a nasty infection for a month, so wasn't in my best shape, but there was no way I was going to miss the chance. So I headed out with a used M&P I'd purchased and fired a grand total of one magazine through (I've typically done training with a Compact, so really not much of a factor). First couple of rounds went great, but then the fatigue of illness started setting in and I could see my performance dropping. But, I didn't finish last on any stages, actually did fairly well on a few of the rounds, didn't get DQed, and have a better idea of what to practice before the next match...which is unfortunately 2 months away. So I'll be browsing the forums now that I know a little more about what things mean, and looking for ways to set up some practice as my club doesn't seem to offer anything besides matches.
  7. Hi all. I've been shooting for more years than I care to think about, but only recently took enough decent classes to have gained more confidence in my abilities. I went to watch a match last weekend and think I've found my next interest to invest in...unfortunately it was the last match of the season here in the mountains So meanwhile, I'll be reading, learning, and practicing what I can to get an early start next year...and to resist getting new equipment before I've ever even shot in a match!
